Former Johnson County resident, Sybil Powers, 85, died Wednesday, December 22, in Wabash, Indiana.
Mrs. Powers was born November 29, 1914, in Johnson County, to the late Warnie and Nora Rivers Blair. She was retired from Wabash County Hospital.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Daniel O. Powers, in October 1973.
Surviving are two sons, Charles E. Powers of Wabash and William R. Powers of Lockbourne, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Betty Overholzer and June Marshall, both of Dayton, Ohio; and nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 26, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Roger Hill and Bill Sluss officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Lora Walter
1908-1999
Lora Thelma Chandler Walter, 91, of Ashland, died Monday, December 20, in Centerville, Tennessee.
Mrs. Walter was born January 31, 1908, at Charley, to the late John H. and Nora Hayes Chandler. She was a retired school teacher from the Catlettsburg and Boyd County Schools. She was also a co-author of four books on the family history of the Chandler, Walter and Hayes families. She was a member of the Beaver Valley United Baptist Church, Kentucky Genealogical Society, Boyd County Education Association and the Boyd County Retired Teacher Association.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawson Wadesworth Walter, in 1966.
Surviving are six sons, Lafayette, John Paul, Wendell, and William Grady Walter, all of Ashland, Richard B. Walter of Catlettsburg and Theodore B. Walter of Lexington; one daughter, Norida "Nan" Nipp of Ashland; three brothers, Leroy, Paul W. and John William Chandler, all of Huntington, West Virginia; one sister, Gladys Blake of Beaver, Ohio; and 26 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 23, at Miller Funeral Home of Ashland.
Burial was in East Ashland Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Rodney E. Dutton
1948-1999
Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Rodney E. Dutton, 51, who died Thursday, December 16, at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Mr. Dutton was born December 13, 1948, in Johnson County, to the late Earl and Irene VanHoose Dutton. He was an electrician.
Surviving are two sons, Tony Earl Dutton of Tutor Key and Charles Ray Dutton of Van Lear; one brother, Harold B. Dutton of Louisa; one sister, Patsy V. Williams of Ashland; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 20, at Richardson Chapel, Richardson, with Tommy Meade and Claude Horn officiating.
Burial was in VanHoose Family Cemetery at Louisa.
Ernest Hatfield
1929-1999
Van Lear resident Ernest Hatfield, 70, died Thursday, December 16, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Hatfield was born September 6, 1929, in Floyd County, to the late Irvin and Dixie Mollett Hatfield. He was a retired general laborer.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Hannah Hatfield; one son, Tony Hatfield of Paintsville; one brother, David Hatfield of Dale, Texas; three sisters, Estalene Blackburn of East Point, Maxine Sparks of Stanton and Minnie Psaros of Manhattan Beach, California; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 18, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Roger Hill and Kenny Collins officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Callie Daniels
1908-1999
Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Callie Daniels, 91, who died Saturday, December 18, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Daniels was born September 14, 1908, in Magoffin County, to the late Kelly B. and Maudie Stapleton Adams. She was a salesclerk.
She was also preceded in death by her ex-husband, Edd Daniels; and a grandson, Robert Price .
Surviving are two sons, Bob Daniels of Versailles and James Daniels of Hatfield; two daughters, Joann Price of Paintsville and Geraldine Combs of Lexington; two sisters, Ethel Preston of Tutor Key and Irene Preston of Nippa; and four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 21, at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Charles Stapleton officiating.
Burial was in Daniels Cemetery at Tutor Key.
Virginia Sparks

Funeral services were held Monday, December 20, for Virginia Dare Sparks, 90, who died Friday, December 17, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Sparks was born November 1, 1909, in Johnson County, to the late Thomas Jefferson and Laura Castle Sparks. She was a store clerk.
Surviving are one sister, Fay Sparks of Louisville; two sisters-in-law; and one niece.
Officiating at services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel was Charles Price .
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Curtis Collins
1924-1999
Former Johnson County resident Curtis Collins, 75, of Huber Heights, Ohio, died Tuesday, December 14.
Mr. Collins was born December 11, 1924, in Van Lear, to the late Wiley and Maudie Collins. He was retired from Chrysler Airtemp and a member of the Church of Christ and the Masonic Temple.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Archie Collins; and two sisters, Ruth Harper and Sue Byrd.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Collins; one son, Alan Collins of Huber Heights; two daughters, Linda Collins of Dayton, Ohio, and Melanie Galbreath of New Carlisle, Ohio; two sisters, Joyce Short of Russells Point, Ohio, and Edna Dills of Columbus, Ohio; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 17, at Magetta Gavin Funeral Home, Dayton.
Burial was in Glen Haven Cemetery.
Kermit Wells

Kermit Wells, 93, died Sunday, December 18, at his Meally residence.
Mr. Wells was born January 13, 1906, in Martin County, to the late Marion and Alice Burke Wells. He was a coalminer.
Surviving are his wife, Alka Spriggs Wells; one son, George Cleo Wells of Meally; one daughter, Carol Bush of Winchester; two sisters, Garnetta Rucker and Imogene Sammons, both of Van Lear; and five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 21, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with B. Joe Hill officiating.
Burial was in Wells Family Cemetery at Meally.
Roscoe Preston
1918-1999
Retired teacher Roscoe Preston, 81, died Friday, December 17, at his residence.
Mr. Preston was born December 9, 1918, in Johnson County, to the late L.T. and Nora Jane Lemaster Preston. He was retired from the Johnson County School System and a member of the Old Friendship United Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Castle Preston; one son, Timothy Preston of Attica, Ohio; three daughters, Janet Smith of Whitehouse, Barbara Curtis of Williamsport and Alicia Robinette of Wittensville; two brothers, Ray T. Preston of West Van Lear and Guy Preston of Muldraugh; three sisters, Floretta McKenzie of Van Lear, Helen McDowell of Dayton, Ohio, and Callie Price of Akron, Ohio; and eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 21, at Concord United Baptist Church, with Harold Conley, Bruce Howard and Charles Price officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery at Williamsport.
Paul Castle

Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Paul Buel Castle, 75, who died Friday, December 18, at Thealka.
Mr. Castle was born May 2, 1924, in Johnson County, to the late Troy and Laura Alice McClure Castle. He was a retired miner.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel Irene Castle; one son, James Harold "Bud" Castle of Paintsville; three daughters, Juanita Estep of Thelma, Patricia Ratliff of Thealka and Cathy Spears of Richmond; two brothers, Arlie Castle of Tutor Key and Olaf Castle of Williamsburg, Ohio; one sister, Marsha Meade of Paintsville; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Preston Funeral Home Chapel was Hubert Slone.
Burial was in Castle Cemetery at Nippa.
Leon Rosiek

Funeral services will be held today, Friday, December 17, for Leon Edward Rosiek, 68, who died Sunday, December 12, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.
Mr. Rosiek was born November 23, 1931, in Fayette County, West Virginia, to the late Anthony and Mary C. Urygga Rosiek. He was regional manager for Dowell Chemical and a veteran of the Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Jean Spencer Rosiek; one son, Tony Rosiek of Danville, Illinois; two daughters, Mary Hackworth of Van Lear and Kimberly Adams of Winchester; one brother, Stanley Rosiek of Oak Hill, West Virginia; four sisters, Catherine Shamblin of Georgia, Angie Zaleski of Ft. Gioriti, Michigan, Ann Novak of Westland, Michigan, and Helen Hess of Beckley, West Virginia; and four grandchildren.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel will be Rev. Ed Tackett.
Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Ruth Herald
1919-1999
Ruth Marie Herald, 80, died December 13 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
Mrs. Herald was born March 16, 1919, in Zeona, South Dakota, to the late Richard F. and Adele Schmale Ruby. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zeona, veteran of the Korean War, member of the Woman's Army Corps "WAC" and a schoolteacher.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tolbert I. Herald, in 1977.
Surviving are one daughter, Adele McKinney of Nicholasville; one brother, Paul Ruby of Sturgis, South Dakota; two sisters, May Hathaway of Lemon, South Dakota, and Emma Willey of Winston, Oregon; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 16, at Wright's Funeral Home of Greenup, with Dr. William Moore officiating.
Burial was in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens, Flatwoods.
