Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, 2 p.m. at the Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel for Cobert Calvin “Speedy” Salyer, 80, of Flat Gap, who passed away Sunday, Oct. 20 at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Mr. Salyer was born May 16, 1933 at Flat Gap, son of the late Trimble and Eula McKenzie Salyer. He was a city maintenance supervisor; a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, and a Life Member of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Salyer; four daughters, Denise Oberley and Judy Rose, both of Flat Gap, Jennifer Salyer and Lisa Salyer, both of Circleville, Ohio; one step-son, David Dale of Orient, Ohio; step-daughter, Diane Dodge of Columbus, Ohio; twin brother, Hobert Salyer of Keaton; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
The service will be officiated by Phillip Keeton, with burial to follow in the Sparks Family cemetery at Flat Gap.

Donnie Joe Bowen
1957-2013
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, 11 a.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Donnie Joe Bowen, 56, of Thealka, who passed away Saturday, Oct. 19 at his residence.
Mr. Bowen was born Feb. 18, 1957 in Johnson County, son of the late Albert and Janorah Collins Bowen. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Bowen; and one sister, Ermalee.
Surviving are his wife, Laura Heinrich Bowen; three sons, Joseph (Tonya) Bowen of McDowell, James Bowen of Paintsville, and Zachery (Lonna) Bowen of Thealka; two brothers, Dennis Bowen of Middle Fork, and Arnold Bowen of Lowmansville; five sisters, Garnett Armstrong of Paintsville, Mable Blair and Beulah Moore, both of Hager Hill, Shirley Stamper of Denver, and Kathy Scott of Riceville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The service will be officiated by Slade Stinson.

Ferresse Allen ‘Jake’ Riffe
1976-2013
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 20, 1 p.m. at the Concord Independent Church for Ferresse Allen “Jake” Riffe, 37, of Hager Hill, who passed away Thursday, Oct. 17 in Louisa.
Mr. Riffe was born Oct. 16, 1976 in Columbus, Ohio, son of Beverly Ratliff and the late Roger Ratliff. He was a laborer for Local 1445 Laborer’s Union.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Elizabeth Ward Riffe of Hager Hill; one son, Hayden Ratliff; one daughter; Bella Riffe; step-son, Dylan Lackey; and step-daughter, Autumn Lackey, all at home; and one sister, Bobbi Johnson of Louisa.
The service was officiated by Pastor Steve Rose, with burial in the Ratliff cemetery at Louisa.

Loretta Phelps
1929-2013
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, 1 p.m. at the Paintsville Church of Christ for Loretta Phelps, 84, of Dallas, Texas, formerly of Meally, who passed away Monday, Oct. 21.
Mrs. Phelps was born Jan. 27, 1927 in Johnson County, daughter of the late Grover and Oma Music. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Phelps; and her brother, Clifford Kirk. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are one daughter, Brenda (Mike) Franklin; one son, Roger (Donna) Phelps; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Fri., Oct. 25, 2 p.m.-9 p.m.
The service will be officiated by Johnny Lemaster, with burial to follow in the Phelps Family cemetery at Meally.
Pearl Marie Welch
1914-2013
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 21, 2 p.m. at the J. H. Churchill Funeral Home in Murray, for Pearl Marie Welch, 99, of Murray, who passed away Saturday, Oct. 19 at her residence.
Mrs. Welch was born Jan. 16, 1914 in Van Lear, daughter of the late Gilbert and Dorisa May Salyers Young. She was retired from Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company in Huntington, W. Va.; and a lifelong member of the Eastern Star and the Pioneer Telephone Organization. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Francis Lyle “Jack” Welch; four sisters, Beatrice Cundiff, Ruby Dickerson, Clara Adams, and Madge Pack; one brother, Hobart Young; and grandson, James Patrick McCoart.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Sue McCoart (James) Herndon of Murray; three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Father Jason McClure and Rev. Kerry Lambert, with burial in the Murray City Cemetery.

Sharon Hawk Dale
1939-2013
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Sharon Hawk Dale, 74, formerly of Flat, who passed away Sunday, Oct. 20 in Elizabeth, W. Va.
Mrs. Dale was born April 13, 1939 in Canton, Ohio, daughter of the late Vaughan and Justine Rhodes Hawk. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Dale; one son, David Eugene Peterman Jr.; and one brother, Edward Eugene Hawk.
Surviving are two sons, Dwaine Peterman of Elizabeth, and Fred Dale Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Diane Dodge of Columbus, and Debbie Peterman of Fort Pierce, Fla.; one brother, Vaughn “Mike” Hawk of Ohio; three sisters, Beverly Hawk of South Carolina, Pam Witherspoon of Ohio, and Diane Hawk of Illinois; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 23. 3 p.m.-8 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 24, 9 a.m. until time of service.
The service will be officiated by Earl Wright and Paul Dean Meade, with burial to follow in the Staffordsville Church cemetery at Staffordsville.

Wesley Shane Fyffe
1976-2013
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2 p.m. at the Johnson County Memorial cemetery at Staffordville, for Wesley Shane Fyffe, 37, of Flat Gap, who passed away Thursday, Oct. 10.
Mr. Fyffe was born Oct. 5, 1976 in Covington, son of Karen Kelly Fyffe Gallosa and the late Terry Fyffe. He was a mechanic with Delta Air Lines.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Tiffany Carl Fyffe; three sons, William Kenneth Fyffe, Christopher Patrick Fyffe, and Bradley Shane Fyffe, all of Flat Gap; two daughters, Alexis and Elizabeth Fyffe, both of Flat Gap; paternal grandmother, Sybil Fyffe, and maternal grandmother, Marie Kelly of Martha.
The service was officiated by Tim Salyer.

Walter Blevins
1921-2013
Walter Blevins, 92, of West Van Lear, died Wednesday, October 16, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Born October 1, 1921, at Hager Hill, he was the son of the late Sonny and Stella Salyer Blevins.
He was a retired truck driver.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Elva Goble Blevins, to whom he was married
for 70 years.
He is survived by three sons: Emery Blevins and William Blevins, both of West Van Lear, and Nero Blevins, of Meally; four daughters: Amelia Godfrey, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Joyce Kestner and Louella Kestner, both of Hager Hill, and Norma Jo Kestner, of West Van Lear; one sister: Mabel Pitts, of Salem, Ohio; 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and, one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, October 19, at 1 p.m., at the Little Mud Lick Church of God, in Staffordsville. Tobe Wheeler will officiate.
Visitation will be held Friday and Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in the Blevins Family Cemetery, in West Van Lear.
