Gladys Meek, 84, died Thursday, December 9, at her Paintsville residence.
Mrs. Meek was born September 3, 1915, in Johnson County, to the late William and Mary Ward Wheeler.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Meek, on July 30, 1977.
Surviving are four sons, Charles, Richard, and Clifford Meek, all of Paintsville, and William Meek Jr. of Dema; one daughter, Jeannetta Meek of Paintsville; two stepsons, Collie Meek of Mentor, Ohio, and I.D. Meek of Mississippi; one stepdaughter, Judith Smith of Paintsville; and five grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 11, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with John R. Pelphrey officiating.
Burial was in Sparks Family Cemetery at Thelma.
Reba Castle
1920-1999
Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Reba Castle, 79, who died Thursday, December 9, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Ms. Castle was born February 11, 1920, in Johnson County, to the late Fred and Gertrude Short VanHoose. She was a cook.
She was also preceded in death by a son, John Fred Castle.
Surviving are four daughters, Kim Castle of Paintsville, Diana Ree Flanigan of Prestonsburg, Paula Dee Castle of Columbus, Ohio, and Loutishia Castle of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina; one sister, Ernestine Hackney of Sitka; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 12, at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Revs. Dick VanHoose, Harold Conley and Lonnie Salyer officiating.
Burial was in VanHoose Cemetery at Tutor Key.
Chester Green
1918-1999
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 12, for Chester Green, 81, who died Wednesday, December 8, at his Lowmansville residence.
Mr. Green was born April 21, 1918, in Johnson County, to the late Minuard L. and Clara Barker Green. He was a coal miner.
Surviving are his wife, Marie VanHoose Green; one son, James Kenneth "Jim" Green of Hager Hill; one brother, Oakley Green of East Point; three sisters, Nora Blair of Staffordsville, Ola Kastrounis of Tutor Key and Clara Michaels of Arlington, Texas; and one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Officiating at services at George's Creek United Baptist Church, Lowmansville, were elders Carlos Preston, Rutherford Blair and Paul K. Castle.
Burial was in the family cemetery at Lowmansville, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Isaac Nelson
1928-1999
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, December 16, for Isaac "Ike" Nelson, 71, who died Monday, December 13, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Nelson was born January 29, 1928, in Johnson County, to the late William and Emma Lyons Nelson. He was retired from Adams Construction and a member of First Freewill Baptist Church, Paintsville.
He was also preceded in death by one grandson and one great-grandson.
Surviving are his wife, Rosie Gasparac Nelson; one son, Fred Nelson of East Point; two daughters, Barbara Salyer and Connie Castle, both of Paintsville; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at First Freewill Baptist Church will be Revs. Larry Blair and Larry Smith.
Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Loretta Dodd
1940-1999
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 9, for Loretta Dodd, 59, who died December 5 at Baptist Hospital East, Louisville.
Mrs. Dodd was born April 28, 1940, at Wheelwright, to Mazie Caudill Stanford and the late Ross Stanford. She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God in Louisville.
Surviving are her husband, John Dodd Sr.; her mother; three sons, Danny Dodd of Dallas, Georgia, John Dodd Jr. of Louisville and Frain Diaz Jr. of Geneva, Ohio; four daughters, Carol Sue Hall of Detroit, Michigan, Billy Lou Hall of Indiana, Casandra Hall of Geneva, Ohio, and Patricia DeSherlia of Louisville; two brothers, John and Paul Hall, both of Jonancy; three sisters, Phyllis Syck of Pikeville, Charlotte Draper of Elkhorn City and Patty Sowards of Jonancy; and 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Officiating at services at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel was Rev. David M. Lewis.
Burial was in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville.
Clarence Castle
1928-1999
Paintsville resident Clarence Ray Castle, 71, died Saturday, December 4, at his residence.
Mr. Castle was born August 20, 1928, in Johnson County, to the late William and Mima Stambaugh Castle. He was a retired security guard from Paintsville Lake and a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Castle; one son, Hobart Ray Castle of Sitka; two daughters, Marcia Castle of Sitka and Sharon Brown of Richmond; four brothers, Willard, James H., Bobby and William Jr., all of Tutor Key; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 7, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Larry O'Bryan and Larry Joe Bayes officiating.
Burial was in Bayes Family Cemetery at Hager Hill.
Peggy Sheppard
1943-1999
Peggy Sheppard, 56, of Sheppardtown, West Virginia, died Friday, December 3, at her Holden, West Virginia, residence.
Mrs. Sheppard was born June 5, 1943, at Holden, West Virginia, to Ed Ramey and the late Eula Baldwin Ramey. She was a licensed practical nurse.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Charles Ramey.
Surviving are her husband, James (Jimmy) Sheppard; her father, of Riceville; two sons, Scott Sheppard of Logan, West Virginia, and Justin Sheppard of Sheppardtown; one daughter, Vicki Pippen of Vesuvius, Virginia; and two brothers, Larry Ramey of Baisdentown, West Virginia, and Junior Ramey of Summerspoint, New Jersey.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 5, at Little Dove United Baptist Church, Belo, West Virginia, with Elder Jimmy Maynard officiating.
Burial was in Perkins Cemetery at Riceville.
Pallbearers were Scott, Justin, Shane and Haskell Sheppard, Kevin Baisden, Joe Vance and David Pippen.
Honorary pallbearers were John Vance, James Justice, Ronnie Taylor and Nathaniel Lucas.
Bruce Cantrell
1908-1999
Former Johnson County resident Bruce Cantrell, 91, of Mackey, Indiana, died Saturday, December 4, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
Mr. Cantrell was born January 9, 1908, in Johnson County, to the late John Henry and Maranda Cantrell. He retired from Craddox Furniture Company and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of UMWA and Local 5179, having helped organize the UMWA in Kentucky, member of McCullough Grove Baptist Church and Van Lear Historical Society.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Herman, in 1938.
Surviving are his wife, Dixie Mann Cantrell; four daughters, Barbara Bolin and Helen Hodgen, both of Mackey, Addie Clevenger of Honea Pata, South Carolina, and Hattie Books of Hagerstown, Indiana; and 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 6, at McCullough Grove Baptist Church in Oakland City, Indiana, with Rev. Kenneth S. Thomas officiating.
Burial was in Montgomery Cemetery, with Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Corey Cavins

Corey Dane Cavins, 7, died Thursday, December 2.
Corey was born August 21, 1992, in Floyd County, to Philip Dane and Elizabeth Ann Poe Cavins. He was a student at W.R. Castle Elementary.
Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Philip Cavins of Lowmansville and Brandon Poe of Thealka; one sister, Gena Cavins of Sitka; and his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Wanda Poe of Charley.
Private graveside services were held Saturday, December 4, at Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, with Roger Hill officiating.

Misty Dawn Poe

Misty Dawn Poe, 11, died Thursday, December 2.
Misty was born February 19, 1988, in Lawrence County, to Raleigh Marshall and Elizabeth Ann Poe Cavins. She was a student at W.R. Castle Elementary.
Surviving are her parents; stepfather, Philip Cavins; two brothers, Philip Cavins of Lowmansville and Brandon Poe of Thealka; one sister, Gena Cavins of Sitka; and her maternal grandparents, Alfred and Wanda Poe of Charley.
