Minerva Kirk
Minerva Kirk of Big Elk Creek, Beauty (formerly of Paintsville), lived a full life with family and friends and faith in God until her death on Oct. 15, 2012, at the age of 98 years, 6 months, and eight days.
Born April 7, 1914 in Red Jacket (Mingo Co.) W. Va., the eldest child of the late Edward Crum and Margie Copley Crum Salmons.
Minerva’s family farm was on Boar Branch on Big Elk Creek (Martin Co.). Her father was a coal miner who was killed in a mine accident in West Virginia when Minerva was 12 years old. Her mother, Margie was expecting a child, so most of the household chores and caring for the younger children in the home fell to Minerva, as she was the eldest. Her uncles convinced her mother to send Minerva (age 13) and the three boys (Auxier, age 11; Glen, age nine; and Frank, age five) to the Odd Fellows Home in Elkins, W.Va. Madalena, age three, and a newborn, Edvenna, were too young to go to the Odd Fellows Home. Minerva and her brothers were in the Odd Fellows Home for three years before returning home to Martin County to help her mother take care of the farm and family. Minerva went to Berea, now Berea Foundation School and College, to attend school, but was called home on several occasions to care for ailing family members. Margie raised her family alone, only to marry again after the youngest, Edvenna, graduated from college and had a teaching job.
Minerva was a very strong person, always guiding and applauding and teaching her children, grandchildren, and others, the values of life, patriotism and their civic duties. She encouraged her children to succeed in whatever their goals were in life and was very proud of how they turned out. The two oldest daughters were successful business women, the two younger daughters chose a career with the U.S. government and the two boys, as well as her three brothers served in the United States military before returning to other successes. She was very proud of their accomplishments and shared with someone one day that “her children had approximately 75 years total service to our great country”.
Minerva was a dedicated Christian and a member of the World Wide Church of God, and then joined The Restored Church of God, since the early 1960’s.
In addition to her parents, Minerva was preceded in death by her brothers, James Auxier, Glen Reather and Lynch Franklin; and sisters, Elizabeth, Juanita, Madalena and Edvenna; her ex-husband, Luther Kirk; daughter, Donna Runyon; great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Stamey; and great-great-granddaughter, Isabella Hudson.
She is survived by children, Mary Kirk of Columbus, Ohio, Wanda Foster of Hutto, Texas, Joyce (Doug) Durrant of Spokane, Wash., Glen (Mary Jo) Kirk of Inez, and John (Cathy) Kirk of Coeburn, Va.; 11 grandchildren, George (Ginny) Fitch, Jimmy Runyon, Sandy Runyon (Scott) Davis, Christine Foster (Charles) Dittman, Mike (Val Hendrix) Stamey, Pam Stamey (Phil) Terrill, Christopher Kirk, John Kirk, Joseph Kirk, Robert (Lena) Kirk and Elizabeth Kirk (Brian) Newberry; sixteen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pall Bearers: Grandsons – George Fitch, Jimmy Runyon, Mike Stamey, Christopher, John, Joseph, and Robert Kirk.
A family viewing will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, with Michael Webster officiating. Interment will follow at the Perry cemetery on Big Elk Creek (Martin Co.).
Arrangements under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.
