Edward Castle

Edward E. Castle, 81, of Ashland, died Saturday, January 8, at his residence.
Mr. Castle was born October 15, 1918, in Boyd County, to the late Harry and Stella Chandler Castle. He was an employee of the Semet Solvay Plant and was an Army veteran, having served during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Arthie Castle; one son, Lonnie Castle of Morehead; two daughters, Carolyn Castle of Berea and Catherine Castle Kidd of Lafollette, Tennessee; and four grandchildren.
Vernie Music

Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Vernie Music, 71, who died Wednesday, January 5, at her Meally residence.
Mrs. Music was born July 3, 1928, at Zebulon, to the late John and Wyonana Reynolds Belcher.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John D. Music, on June 22, 1991.
Surviving are four sons, Kenneth Music of Meally, Larry Music of Staffordsville, Marlin Music of Flat Gap and John D. Music Jr. of Albion, Michigan; five daughters, Linda McCarty of Hager Hill, Joyce Ann King of Meally, Connie Clark of David, Carrie Tavoletti of Pennsylvania and Judy Gail Stone of South Point, Ohio; one sister, Dolly Allen of Stone; and 30 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Opal Clark

Opal Borders Bentley Clark, 85, died Friday, January 7, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, McDowell.
Mrs. Clark was born July 5, 1914, in Magoffin County, to the late Patrick and Cindy George Borders. She was a postal worker.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ira Bentley.
Surviving are her husband, Champ Clark; one brother, Stanley Borders of Madison, Virginia; and two sisters, Mavis Patrick and Estalena Blair, both of Paintsville.
Henry Sites

Retired truck driver Henry Samuel Sites, 65, died Friday, January 7, at his Boons Camp residence.
Mr. Sites was born August 28, 1934, in Johnson County, to the late Pete and Helen Adams Sites. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are two sons, Pete Samuel Sites of Columbus, Ohio, and John Leslie Sites of Inez; three daughters, Donna Lou Case of Williamsport, Loretta Sites Howard of Pikeville and Laura Renee Frisk of Corbin; one stepdaughter, Betty Stroud of Boons Camp; one brother, Lonnie Joe Sites of Staffordsville; and seven grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Richard Spears

Former Johnson County resident Richard E. Spears, 77, of Windham, Ohio, died Tuesday, January 4, at Laurie Ann Nursing Home, Newton Falls, Ohio.
Mr. Spears was born May 24, 1922, in Johnson County, to the late Jerry and Della Rivers Spears. He was a retired die setter from Rockwell International and had worked at Denman Rubber. He was a member and deacon of the Green Valley United Baptist Church in Stow.
He was also preceded in death by a brother.
Surviving are his wife, Edna Lemaster Spears; one daughter, Wanda Archon of Windham; one brother, Earl Spears of Ashland; and one granddaughter.
Juanita Williams

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 6, for Juanita Faye Williams, 65, who died Monday, January 3, at her Lowmansville residence.
Mrs. Williams was born October 21, 1934, in Johnson County, to the late Freddie and Pina McKenzie Ratliff.
Surviving are her husband, Tollie Estelle Williams; one son, Tollie Estelle Williams Jr. of Rockville, Tennessee; five daughters, Monica Spradlin of Denver, Wanda Adkins of Lowmansville, Pina Chandler of River, Connie Jenkins of Millersville, Tennessee, and Ruby Stephens of Lebanon, Tennessee; two brothers, James Ernie and Paul Rex Ratliff, both of Staffordsville; four sisters, Betty Frisby, Mary Ratliff, Doris Haney and Shirley Blanton, all of Staffordsville; and 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Minnie Rigsby

Ms. Rigsby was born November 6, 1908, in Johnson County, to the late Jerry and Coreelia Skaggs Rigsby.

Peggy Wilson

Peggy Wheeler Wilson, 78, died Saturday, January 1, at St. Thomas Hospital, Tennessee.
Mrs. Wilson was born in Floyd County, and was a long time resident of Franklin, Tennessee. She was a past member of the Williamson County School Board, previously taught school at Fairfax Academy and was a former buyer for retail women's clothing for Castner Knott. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe M. Wilson.
Surviving are one son, John Christopher Wilson of Maryville, Tennessee; one daughter, Ann Simmons Gordon of Canton, Georgia; one sister, Barbara McPherson of Paintsville; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Richard Williams

Richard Ferris Williams, 85, died February 3 at Koester Pavilions Health Care Center, Troy, Ohio.
Mr. Williams was born November 8, 1914, to the late Frank and Stella VanHoose Williams of Johnson County.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are four sisters, Clara W. Rice of Flatwoods, Alta Shields of Zenia, Ohio, Geneva Rice of Holland, Michigan, and Carrel Lacy of Shelton, Washington.
Orville Castle

Former Johnson County resident Orville Castle, 81, died Tuesday, February 29, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Mr. Castle was born October 10, 1918, in Johnson County, to the late Robert and Minnie Murphy Castle. He was a retired self-employed carpenter.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Stambaugh Castle, on January 24, 1973.
Surviving are one son, Fred Castle of Milan, Michigan; two daughters, Barbara Tiziani of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, and Joyce Weddington of Saline, Michigan; two brothers, Homer Castle of Kansas City, Kansas, and James Floyd Castle of Maytown; two sisters, Gracie Pack of Franklin, Ohio, and Oneida Stambaugh of Kansas; and two grandchildren, three great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.
Julia Preston

Julia Butler (Mammie) Preston, 94, died Tuesday, February 29, at her Paintsville residence.
Mrs. Preston was born January 21, 1906, in Paintsville, to the late James Preston Butler and Mary Wheeler Butler. She co-owned and operated, with her late husband, the Paintsville Funeral Home since 1948.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd H. Preston.
Surviving are one son, Russell Preston of Paintsville; one daughter-in-law, Stella Preston, of Paintsville; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
James Rivers

James Hershell Rivers, 73, died Monday, February 28, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Rivers was born January 11, 1927, in Johnson County, to the late George and Susan May Rivers. He was a farmer.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Junior Rivers.
Surviving are one niece, Deloris McCarty of Paintsville.
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, March 3, at 2 p.m. at Beechwall United Baptist Church, with Elders James Blair and Jerry Colvin officiating.
Burial will be in May & Rivers Family Cemetery, with Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Lois Burchett

Paintsville resident Lois Evelyn Hooper Burchett, 66, died Tuesday, February 29, at her residence.
Mrs. Burchett was born November 2, 1933, in Letcher County, to the late Rev. Walter and Jewell Rudd Hooper. She was a registered nurse.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wade Oliver Burchett, on July 3, 1999; and a brother, Jim Hooper, in August 1991.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Mark Link of Westerville, Ohio; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Jasper Maynard

Mr. Maynard was born February 17, 1926, in Martin County, to the late William (Bill) and Roxie Blackburn Maynard.

Surviving are his mother; one daughter, Shelby Lauren Davis of River; one brother, Ritchie Litton of Elizabethtown; and two sisters, Patty Hall of Staffordsville and Karen Reffett of Inez.

Retired miner Carl Collins, 77, died Wednesday, February 23, at his Van Lear residence.
Mr. Collins was born December 26, 1922, in Johnson County, to the late William McKinley and Callie Daniels Collins.
Surviving are his wife, Polly Wells Collins; two sons, Mike Collins of Flat Gap and Larry Collins of Van Lear; one daughter, Benette Ford of Okeechobee, Florida; two brothers, Clyde Collins of Van Lear and Raymond Collins of Frankfort; three sisters, Maggie Penix and Lois May, both of Van Lear, and Mary Ferguson of Lexington; and six grandchildren.

Mrs. James was born December 29, 1923, in Huntington, West Virginia, to the late Elza Alfred and Lattie Fannin Caudill.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elza Jack Caudill and Clyde Miller.
Surviving are her husband, Albert "Al" Richard James; three brothers, Harry Caudill of Nippa, Sam Caudill of Blaine and Harvey Caudill of River; and two sisters, Barbra Lou Caudill Shepard of Springfield, Ohio, and Gladys Mae Caudill of River.
