Joseph May
1941-2000
Joseph Delmar “Joe” May, 59, formerly of Johnson County, died Friday, June 16, at his home in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
Mr. May was born April 6, 1941, to the late Curtis James and Donnie Conley May. He was retired from Bell Atlantic.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Jane Godlove, on November 1, 1991; one brother, Curtis May Jr.; and a sister, Edna Carol Blanton.
Surviving are a brother, Jack D. May of Bunker Hill, West Virginia; one sister, Ruth Blanton of Carey, Ohio; a half sister, Mrs. Columbus Brown of Fostoria, Ohio; three half brothers, Raymond May of Palma, Indiana, Donald May of Patterson, Ohio, and John May of Fostoria; and several nieces and nephews, locally two nieces, Janet Hannah and Judi Colvin of Leander.
Omps Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, with Rev. Lynn Durbin officiating.
Burial was in Gainesboro Cemetery.

Mary Harman
1935-2000
Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Mary Sue Harman, 65, who died Wednesday, June 21, at King’s Daughters’ Medical Center, Ashland.
Mrs. Harman was born May 25, 1935, at Estill, to the late Willard Arthur Dixon and Nancy Ann Stanley.
Surviving are her husband, Paul H. Harman of Paintsville; one daughter, Nannette S. Robinson of Paintsville; four sons, Charlie L. Harman of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Timothy P. Harman of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Garry F. Harman of St. Paul, Indiana, and Linzie “Joe” Harman of Lawrenceville, Georgia; one brother, Harold Dixon of Wayland; and seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 25, at Fairview Freewill Baptist Church, with Revs. Roger Hill and Danny Ward officiating.
Burial was in Blue Grass Cemetery at Salyersville.

Roger Kestner Jr.
1974-2000
Roger Lee Kestner Jr., 25, died Friday, June 23, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Kestner was born October 25, 1974, in Johnson County, to Roger Sr. and Evelyn Lemaster Kestner. He was employed by Kelly’s Radiator Shop.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Clifton Kestner; his parents; one sister, Melissa Kestner of Sitka; and maternal grandmother, Armatha LeMaster of Paintsville.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Harry Neal Frisby and Roger Hill officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Francis McKenzie
1941-2000
Hager Hill resident Francis Darrell McKenzie, 59, died Friday, June 23, at his residence.
Mr. McKenzie was born January 13, 1941, in Johnson County, to Louella and the late Charlie McKenzie. He was a truck driver.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lorrain McKenzie.
Surviving are his mother, of Sitka; two daughters, Rhonda McKenzie and Darlene Meade, both of Hager Hill; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Roger Thornsbury officiating.
Burial was in Chandler Family Cemetery at Thelma.

Edgar Wallin
1912-2000
Edgar Wallin, 87, of Louisa, died Friday, June 23.
Mr. Wallin was born August 11, 1912, in Johnson County, to the late Hood and Bessie Fyffe Wallin. He was a retired machinist from Jaeger Machine Company of Columbus, Ohio, attended Smokey Valley Enterprise Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Ray and Charles Wallin.
Surviving are his wife, Liddie Mae Wallin; four sisters, Marie Skaggs of Flat Gap, Ilene Hampton of Staffordsville, Maxie Sparks of Hillard, Ohio, and Avanell Skaggs of Columbus; two brothers, Fred Wallin of Catlettsburg and Howard Wallin of Aberdeen, Maryland; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, at Young Funeral Home of Louisa, with Rev. Doug Kelly officiating.
Burial was in Harmon Cemetery, Louisa.

Daniel Gardner
1928-2000
Daniel E. Gardner, 72, of Stratton Branch, died Sunday, June 25, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital.
Mr. Gardner was born April 8, 1928, in Pike County, to the late Ed and Matilda Ball Gardner. He was retired from Rebel Coal, member of the UMWA Local 1468, District 30, and former Pike County deputy sheriff.
Surviving are his wife, Reba Hatfield Gardner; two sons, Rodney and Eddy Gardner, both of Prestonsburg; and one grandson.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, at 1 p.m. at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tom Biddle officiating.
Burial will be in Richmond Cemetery, Prestonsburg.

Martha Shell
1918-2000
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, June 28, for Martha Kathryn Blair Shell, 81, who died Monday, June 26, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Shell was born October 22, 1918, in Floyd County, to the late Rex and Dora Whitaker Blair.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Shell, in July 1980.
Surviving are one son, James Shell of Paintsville; one daughter, Juanita Shell Rigsby of Paintsville; four brothers, Elroy Blair of West Van Lear, William Blair of Paintsville, Morris Blair of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marvin Blair of Indiana; one sister, Margie Robinette of Van Lear; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel will be Hubert Slone.
Burial will follow in Cumbo Cemetery at West Van Lear.

Alma Sexton
1926-2000
Jones-Preston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Alma Mae Branham Sexton, 73, who died Sunday, June 25, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Sexton was born September 10, 1926, in Johnson County, to the late Turner Elza and Sara Elizabeth Kirk Branham.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy J. Sexton, in 1981.
Surviving are 12 sons, Steve Ellis Sexton of Thealka, Phillip Samuel, Ernie Ray, Larry Keith, James Douglas, Johnny Bill and Albert Estill Sexton, all of Paintsville, Everett Lee and Troy Stanley Sexton, both of Staffordsville, Arnold Michael Sexton of River, and Bobby Gene and Gary Lewis Sexton, both of Hager Hill; two daughters, Joyce Ann Baldridge of River and Deloris Hill of Paintsville; two brothers, Odice Branham of Paintsville and Albert Branham of Franklin, Ohio; two sisters, Martha Selvage of Paintsville and Mary Ratliff of River; and 36 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Steve Rose officiating.
Burial will follow in Wells Branham Cemetery at Van Lear.

Bonnie VanHoose
1931-2000
Retired teacher’s aide Bonnie Jean VanHoose, 68, died Monday, June 26, at her Tutor Key residence.
Mrs. VanHoose was born December 12, 1931, in Paintsville, to Mary Elizabeth Castle VanHoose and the late Richard VanHoose. She was retired from the Johnson County School System.
Surviving are her husband, Harry Thomas VanHoose; her mother; one son, Danny VanHoose of Pikeville; one brother, Richard Thomas Castle of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters, Selina Belle Preston of Frontier, Michigan, and Elizabeth Ann Clay of Prestonsburg; and one grandson and one step-grandson.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, at 1 p.m. at Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church, with Elders J.D. Rice, Bruce Howard and Dewey M. Mullins officiating.
Burial will follow in VanHoose Family Cemetery at Tutor Key, with Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Taylor
1933-2000
Sarah Faye “Sud” Stambaugh Taylor, 67, died Thursday, June 15, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Taylor was born April 3, 1933, in Johnson County, to the late Floyd and Eula VanHoose Stambaugh.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wesley Taylor Sr., on February 21, 1992; one son, Frank Taylor; one daughter, Sharon Pennington; and a sister, Betty Sadler.
Surviving are two sons, Jerry Taylor of West Van Lear and Donald Taylor of Orlando, Florida; one daughter, Debra Smith of Nippa; two brothers, Charles Stambaugh of Nippa and Dwight Stambaugh of Thelma; one sister, Bonita VanHoose of Nippa; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 18, at Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, with James Kelly Caudill and Dick VanHoose officiating.
Burial was in VanHoose Family Cemetery at Nippa, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

John Loring
John “Jack” Harley Loring, 68, died June 8 at his Ohio residence.
Mr. Loring was a retired construction worker for Local Iron Workers #172.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lynn Loring; one brother, Frank M. Loring; and a sister, Anna Mary Veach.
Surviving are his wife, Mairiam; one daughter, Sharen Siddle; two sisters, Blanche Atkison and Pat Hammond; and one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 13, at Jerry Spears Funeral Home, Columbus, Ohio.
Burial was in Sunset Cemetery.

Esther Crislip
1919-2000
Former Sitka resident Esther Murray Crislip, 80, of Wilmington, North Carolina, died Saturday, June 17, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Crislip was born September 26, 1919, in Johnson County, to the late C.B. and Lucina Chandler Murray.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cosley Crislip.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald Dean Crislip of Gainesville, Florida, and Jack Crislip of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one daughter, Darlene Wood of Wilmington; one sister, Ruth Murray Daniels of Ashland; and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 22, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Harold Salyers officiating.
Burial was in Marvin Sparks Cemetery at Blaine.

James Blair
1941-2000
James S. Blair, 59, died Tuesday, June 20, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Blair was born April 16, 1941, in Johnson County, to the late Grant and Rushie Stambaugh Blair.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Hackworth Blair; one son, James Dean Blair of Bueaufort, South Carolina; two daughters, Darlene Daniels of Thealka and Rachel Dawn Mills of Paintsville; one sister, Avalee Kimbler of Columbus, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, June 23, at 1 p.m. at Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Hager Hill, with David Blackburn and Mark Ousley officiating.
Burial will be in Sam Blair Cemetery, Denver.

Virginia Fairchild
1948-2000
Oil Springs resident Virginia Kay Fairchild, 52, died Friday, June 9, in Lexington.
Mrs. Fairchild was born March 24, 1948, in Johnson County, to the late Roy L. and Ollie Mae VanHoose Rice.
Surviving are her husband, David Fairchild; three daughters, Cristina L. Fairchild, Carrie L. Fairchild and Davina K. Rivers, all of Oil Springs; three brothers, Seth Paul and James Leon Rice, both of Nippa, and Francis Rice of Louisa; one sister, Stella McCarty of Nippa; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 12, at Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, with James Kelly Caudill and M.T. Womack Jr. officiating.
Burial was in Rice Cemetery at Nippa, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Charles Davis
1928-2000
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, for Charles E. Davis, 72, who died June 8 at his Paintsville residence.
Mr. Davis was born December 31, 1928, in Johnson County, to the late John C. and Julia Katherine Welch Davis. He was disabled and a U.S. Army veteran.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ward Davis.
Surviving are one brother, Chadwick Davis of Meally; and a half brother, Garland L. “Red” Witten of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Officiating at services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel was Arvel Short.
Burial was in Davis-Welch Cemetery at Concord.
