James Burchett
Paintsville resident James Herbert Burchett, 28, died Saturday, July 15, at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tennessee.
Mr. Burchett was born May 22, 1972, in Johnson County, to James O. Burchett and Ann Greene.
Surviving are his parents; one brother, William Ray Greene of Paintsville; and three sisters, Sina Mae Hannah and Connie Lynn Kestner, both of Paintsville, and Marina Burchett of Stambaugh.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 19, at Staffordsville Freewill Baptist Church, with John Michael Blanton officiating.
Burial was in Staffordsville Church Cemetery, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Hitchcock Jr.
1932-2000
Former Johnson County resident Jessie Hitchcock Jr., 67, died Monday, July 10, at his Park Ridge, Illinois, residence.
Mr. Hitchcock was born July 23, 1932, to the late Jessie and Elsie Colvin Hitchcock of Denver. He retired in January 1996 from a rubber company in Chicago after 30 years of service.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Billie Hunley Hitchcock, formerly of Collista, on January 21, 1980; two brothers; and one sister.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Hapanovitch of Park Ridge and Pat Hitchcock of Des Plaines, Illinois; two sisters, Pauline Castle of Paintsville and Lova Ann Borton of Pierceton, Indiana; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 13, at Nelson Funeral Home of Park Ridge.
Burial followed in Acacia Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Chicago.

Wilbur Layne
1917-2000
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Saturday, for Wilbur Woodrow Layne, 83, who died Wednesday, July 19, at his Tom’s Creek residence.
Mr. Layne was born February 24, 1917, to the late Leonard and Lou Caldwell Layne. He was a retired coal miner with Princess Elkhorn Coal of David.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Hall Layne.
Surviving are three sons, Jack of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Roger of Betsy Layne and Shawn of Stanville; three daughters, Patty Bammerlin and Dottie Layne, both of South Bend, Indiana, and Glenda Hatin of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Ellis Layne of Ragland, West Virginia, and Edward Layne of Harold; three sisters, Virginia Whitten of Paintsville, Dollie Mae Butler of Hager Hill and Stella Mavie Adkins of Richmond; and eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel will be Rev. Virgil Hall.
Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.

Zeke Freeman
1933-2000
Zeke Freeman, 66, died Sunday, July 16, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Freeman was born August 6, 1933, in Wolfe County, to the late Dow and Polly Spencer Freeman.
Surviving are one brother, Glen Freeman of East Point.
Graveside services were held Monday, July 17, at the family cemetery at East Point, with Wayne Burch officiating.
Phelps & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James VanHoose
1944-2000
James Kelly VanHoose, 55, died Friday, July 14, at his Lowmansville residence.
Mr. VanHoose was born December 12, 1944, in Lawrence County, to the late Hercie and Verna Davis VanHoose. He was a coal miner with Island Fork Mining and a member of Walnut Grove Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Borders VanHoose; one son, Greg VanHoose of Hogansville, Georgia; three daughters, Sandy Castle of Lowmansville, Melissa Davis of East Point and Kristy VanHoose of Lowmansville; two sisters, Barbara Church of Lorain, Ohio, and Elizabeth Phillips of Tennessee; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 16, at Walnut Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with Revs. Jim Bevins and Harold Stevens officiating.
Burial was in VanHoose Family Cemetery at Lowmansville, with Wilson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Lynn Holbrook
1915-2000
Retired instructor Lynn Boyd Jr. Holbrook, 85, of Grove City, Ohio, formerly of Auxier, died Saturday, July 15, at Columbus Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Holbrook was born February 28, 1915, in Floyd County, to the late Adam Kelsey and Virgie Lee Preston Holbrook. He was a retired instructor from Mayo Technical College and a member of the Church of Christ of Prestonsburg.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Deloris Dotson, in 1970.
Surviving are his wife, Onda Curnutte Holbrook; two sons, Larry Holbrook of Grove City, Ohio, and Don Holbrook of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Patsy Wells of Grove City; two brothers, Charles E. Holbrook of Anderson, South Carolina, and Ralph Holbrook of Panama City, Florida; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Evangelist Bennie Blankenship officiating.
Burial will be in Holbrook Family Cemetery.

Opal Williams
1917-2000
Retired tool clerk Opal Williams, 82, of Flat Gap, died Sunday, July 9, at Dayton Heart Hospital, Dayton, Ohio.
Mrs. Williams was born December 1, 1917, in Wolfe County, to the late Henry B. and Elizabeth Lewis Rose. She was retired from Wright/Patterson Air Force Base and a member of Red Bush Enterprise Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Williams, on July 22, 1984.
Surviving are one son, Marcus Williams of Springfield, Ohio; two daughters, Pocahontas Campbell of Beaver, Ohio, and Elizabeth Reagan of Englewood, Ohio; four brothers, Everett, Linville, Carl and Frank Rose, all of Dayton; three sisters, Ruth Sizemore, Bernice Lockhart and May Palmer, all of Dayton; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 13, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Ellis Hamilton officiating.
Burial was Williams Cemetery at Flat Gap.

Alice Newkirk
1919-2000
Alice B. Weaver Newkirk, 80, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, died Tuesday, July 11, at Gibson General Hospital in Princeton, Indiana.
Mrs. Newkirk was born July 29, 1919, in Vermillion County, Illinois, the daughter of Homer and Susan Whittington Burton. She attended the First Baptist Church in Albion, taught in public schools for several years and was a member of Mt. Carmel Women’s Club.
She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Charles E. Weaver and Charles A. Newkirk; one brother, Donald Burton; and a sister, Genevieve Proudfit.
Surviving are one daughter, Toby Sue Weaver Hall of Sitka; one granddaughter, Alice R. Hall of Louisville; two step-grandchildren, Robin Wallace of Wittensville and Robert Hall of Maine; and two step-great-grandchildren, Jasmine Crawford and Brandon Crawford.
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, in Short Funeral Home Chapel, Mt. Carmel.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Opal Clay
1938-2000
Nippa resident Opal Clay, 61, died Monday, July 3, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Clay was born September 19, 1958, in Paintsville, to the late William Edgar and Savanah Meade Burns. She was a former employee of Johnson Central High School and a member of Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Constance Faith Clay, in 1960.
Surviving are her husband, William Henry Clay; one son, Henry Edward Clay of Nippa; one brother, Willie Burns of Piketon, Ohio; one sister, Mattie Rose Cook of Columbus, Ohio; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 6, at Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, with J.K. Caudill and Charles Slone officiating.
Burial was in Burns-Clay Cemetery at Nippa, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Rutherford Blair
1916-2000
Former Johnson County resident Rutherford Gay Blair, 84, died July 3.
Mr. Blair was born June 4, 1916, in Johnson County, to the late Plamender and Arteala Blair. He was a World War Army veteran, retired from the Farmers Home Administration in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1974, active with the Democratic Party, Tri-County Bowling Association and his local volunteer fire department. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church and Bush Lodge Free & Accepted Masons 704.
Surviving are his wife, Irene Blair; two daughters, Frances Gay Blair Voyles of Killeen, Texas, and Georgia Lee Blair Miller of Greenwood, Indiana; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 6, at House-Rawlings Funeral Home of London, with Rev. Denvis Rush officiating.
Burial was in Cumberland Memorial Gardens at Lilly.

Andrew J. Wright, 86, of Prestonsburg, died Thursday, July 6, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Wright was born August 9, 1913, at Water Gap, to the late Roy and Hariett Burchett Wright. He was a retired inspector for the Bethlehem Steel Company and a school teacher with the Floyd County School System. He was of the Lutheran faith.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine McGinness Wright; six daughters, Iris Jean Shaw and Charlotte Rose Nye, both of Prestonsburg, Andrea Leah Twele of Crownsville, Maryland, Pamelia Louise Decker of Eastern Shore, Maryland, Teresa Marlene Hogan of Arlington, Texas, and Janna Carmen Burkhardt of Eldersburg, Maryland; three half brothers, Bud Wright of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Wade Wright and John Wright, both of Ohio; three half sisters, Nora Smith of Sandusky, Ohio, Garnet Mauk of Arizona and Juanita Fresch of Sandusky, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 8, at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Mark Tackett officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Estill King
1916-2000
Estill Jay “Jake” King, 83, died Tuesday, July 4, at Calvert County Nursing Center in Prince Frederick, Maryland.
Mr. King was born August 24, 1916, to the late James “Jim” and Martha Castle King of Van Lear.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Sprinkle King; one daughter, Jeanette King Lemke; one son, Wallace King; two brothers, Edmon and Woodroe; and three sisters, Ethel, Eva Lee and Malta.
Surviving are one son, James Floyd King of Owings, Maryland; one daughter, Dorothy June Altman of Temple Hills, Maryland; one sister, Louise Kretzer of Van Lear; and 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 7, at Rausch Funeral Home of Owings.
Burial was in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Maryland.

Loretta Craft
1916-2000
Funeral services were held Monday, July 10, for Loretta Craft, 84, who died Friday, July 7, at Terra Haute Regional Hospital, Terra Haute, Indiana.
Mrs. Craft was born February 5, 1916, in Johnson County, to the late George W. and Elizabeth Rice Music.
Surviving are her husband, James Craft; one daughter, Mary Francis Robinson of Ryland Heights; two brothers, Jack and Chester Music, both of Auxier; three sisters, Clara Robinson of Auxier, Irene Kruchko of Casey City, Michigan, and Brenda Joyce Gilber of Fairborn, Ohio; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel were Bobby Joe Spencer and Southie Fannin Jr.
Burial followed in Music Family Cemetery at Auxier.

Mr. Tackett was born February 13, 1953, in Johnson County, to Harvey and Emma Jean VanHoose Tackett.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Smith Tackett; one son, Frank Eugene Tackett of Prestonsburg; two daughters, Jessica Marie and Patricia Lynn Tackett, both of Thealka; one brother, Manuel Tackett of Oil Springs; and one grandchild.
Officiating at services at Thealka Freewill Baptist Church were George Conley and Don Fraley.
Burial was in Ratliff Cemetery at Paintsville, with Phelps & Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
