Lillie Jewell
1926-2000
Former Johnson County resident Lillie Jewell, 74, of Salina, Kansas, died Sunday, November 19.
Mrs. Jewell was born July 15, 1926, in Paintsville, to the late Carmel and Effie Castle VanHoose.
Surviving are her husband, Delmar Jewell; two sons, Bruce Jewell of Wittensville and Gary Jewell of Salina; five daughters, Lorraine Jewell, Sharlene Milligan, Vanessa Jewell and Vera Jewell, all of Salina, and Trudy Fisher of Rossville, Kansas; two brothers, Mitchell and Bobby Vanhoose, all of Sitka; two sisters, Louise Rice of Wittensville and Betty Shelby of Salina; and 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 22, at Ryan Mortuary, with Paul Robbins officiating.
Burial followed in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Shirley Elkins
1926-2000
Paintsville resident Shirley Elkins, 74, died Friday, November 24, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Elkins was born October 24, 1926, in Floyd County, to the late Hobart and Evelyn Patton Elkins.
Surviving are one son, Reggie Campbell of Paintsville; one daughter, Modena Dale of Paintsville; and one brother, Richard Elkins of Prestonsburg.
Memorial services will be held at a later date, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the cancer fund.

Rex Burns
1930-2000
Retired miner Rex Burns, 69, died Saturday, November 25, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Burns was born December 17, 1930, in Johnson County, to the late Carl and Virgie Bolden Burns.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Marshall Burns; five brothers, Carl, Corbitt, Smith and Roy Lee, all of Nippa, and Harold Jay of Wabash, Indiana; and two sisters, Mary Williams of Sitka and Magdalene Blackburn of Debord.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 27, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Jeff Burchett officiating.
Burial followed in Burns Cemetery at Nippa.

Cynthia Cluney
1947-2000
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 28, for Cynthia Ann Cluney, 53, who died Friday, November 24, at her Staffordsville residence.
Mrs. Cluney was born April 5, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Margaret Wagner Tibbots and the late Asberry Tibbots. She was a grocery cashier.
Surviving are her husband, John Patrick Cluney; her mother; two daughters, Dorothy Regedanz of Celena, Ohio, and Janeva Pickering of Indiana; one sister, Sue Hatch of Chalmet, Louisiana; and three grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel was Terry Lykins.
Burial followed in Tackett Cemetery at Sitka.

Lorene Akers
1921-2000
Van Lear resident Lorene Akers, 79, died Tuesday, November 21, at her residence.
Mrs. Akers was born April 13, 1921, in Johnson County, to the late Gervin and Frankie Phelps Short.
Surviving are three sons, Johnny Akers of Roseville, California, David Akers of Richmond and Denny Akers of Cynthiana; two daughters, Freda Spears of Forest City, North Carolina, and Francis Cantrell of Van Lear; three sisters, Lottie Conley of Paintsville and Ruth Collins and Dee Campigott, both of Dayton, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Friday at Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Hager Hill, with Jerry Scott officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Virginia Tackett
1947-2000
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, November 29, for Virginia Gay Tackett, 53, who died Sunday at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Tackett was born June 12, 1947, in Morgan County, to the late Lloyd Elliot and Virtie Gladys Wright Hill. She was a cashier at Happy Mart.
Surviving are one son, Ricky Tackett of Nippa; one daughter, Penny Casey of Flat Gap; and three sisters, Shirley and Lina Cantrell, both of Flat Gap, and Jean Cantrell of West Liberty.
Officiating at 11 a.m. services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel were Eulas Adams, Allen Fannin and Phillip Caudill.
Burial will follow in Cantrell Cemetery at Flat Gap.

Delmer Williams
1921-2000
Ret. First SGT Delmer B. Williams, 79, of Columbus, Georgia, formerly of Van Lear, died Monday, December 18.
Mr. Williams was born July 12, 1921, at Van Lear, to the late Nellie Pack Williams and Houston Williams. He retired with 30 years of service in the United States Army, having received two Bronze Stars, one Silver Star and three Combat Infantry badges. He was the last surviving of 148 veterans that served in all three wars and also served in the 82nd and 101st Airborne. He was a Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, June Alice Williams.
Surviving are two sons, Philip D. Williams of New York and Richard D. Williams of Italy; one daughter, Sherrie W. Thames of Columbus, Ohio; four sisters, Reatha Fox of Florida, Glenna Music of Van Lear, Phylis Murphey of Michigan and Ruth Stambaugh of West Van Lear; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were held December 22 at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery, with McMullen Funeral Home of Columbus in charge of arrangements.

Francis McKenzie Jr.
1953-2000
Deputy jailer Francis Marion McKenzie Jr., 47, died Sunday, December 24, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.
Mr. McKenzie was born March 11, 1953, in Johnson County, to the late Francis Marion and Edith Mae Stapleton McKenzie. He was a Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda G. Reed McKenzie; one son, Phillip E. McKenzie of Paintsville; five brothers, Toby R. and Robert McKenzie, both of Flat Gap, Ford C. McKenzie of Blaine and Paul D. and Charles E. McKenzie, both of Ohio; and eight sisters, Ilene Davis and Betty Daniel, both of Stambaugh, Barbara Conley of Crockett, Rose Blanton of Staffordsville, Judy Grim of Olive Hill, Karen Hamilton of Meally and Rhonda Cantrell and Roxanne DeBoard, both of Texas.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Pigeon Enterprise Baptist Church, with Dick VanHoose and Ellis Hamilton officiating.
Burial followed in McKenzie Cemetery at Kerz, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Daniels
1918-2000
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 17, for Ruby Daniels 82, who died Thursday, December 14, at her Hager Hill residence.
Mrs. Daniels was born October 8, 1918, in Johnson County, to the late David and Georgia Bolen Daniel.
She was also preceded in death by a husband, Everett L. Ratliff, in 1950; one son, Samuel Eddy Ratliff; one daughter, Phyllis Ann Ratliff; three brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are her husband, William Daniels; five sons, Fred K. Ratliff, Charles Vencil Ratliff, Raymond E. Daniels and Danny D. Daniels, all of West Van Lear, and James E. Daniels of Staffordsville; two daughters, Joyce C. Hughes of Tampa, Florida, and Patricia Gail Perkins of Lowmansville; one brother, Charles Ray Daniel of Richmond, Virginia; and 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Staf-fordsville Freewill Baptist Church were Mike Blanton, Jimmy Price and Ronnie Spriggs.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Edna Butcher
1933-2000
Williamsport resident Edna Faye Spradlin Butcher, 67, died Saturday, December 30, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Butcher was born December 18, 1933, to the late Tom and Tava Spradlin Spradlin. She was a retired grocery owner.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Butcher, in 1999; and a brother, William Thomas Reynolds.
Surviving are four sons, Edgar Eugene, Gary and Ronald Butcher, all of Williamsport, and Steve Butcher of Paintsville; three daughters, Diana Blackburn and Donna Hitchcock, both of Williamsport, and Polly Johnson of Flat Gap; two brothers, Howard and Paul Reynolds; five sisters, Carmen Franklin of Van Lear, Rosie Blair of Green Rock, Ella Spradlin of Dayton, Mary Alice Burchett of Jackson, Michigan, and Bobbie Schmitt; and 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held January 2, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Saul Burchett Jr. officiating.
Burial followed in Butcher Family Cemetery at Williamsport.

Luda Preston
1911-2000
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 31, for Luda Mae Preston, 89, who died Thursday at Mt. Camel West Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
Mrs. Preston was born February 5, 1911, in Lawrence County, to the late Lonnie and Zora Fitch LeMaster.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glance Preston, on December 22, 1971.
Surviving are one stepson, Jack Raymond Preston of Paintsville; one daughter, Opal Lee Daniels of Grove City, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Margery Wells of Wittensville; two brothers, Marshall and Hobert LeMaster, both of Ashland; two sisters, Erlene Clay of Grayson and Gladys Bayes of Springfield, Ohio; and one grandchild, one great-grandchild and several step-grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel were Dick VanHoose, Ellis Hamilton and Junior Womack.
Burial followed in Old Hood Cemetery at Blaine.

Hubert Gambill
1919-2000
Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Hubert Clayton Gambill, 81, who died Friday, December 29, at VA Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Butch Gambill.
Mr. Gambill was born December 9, 1919, in Pike County, to the late Lawrence C. and Omie Drago Gambill. He was self-employed at Gambill’s Electric and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Leona Painter Gambill; one son, Michael Gambill of Prestonsburg; one stepson, James G. Payne of Prestonsburg; two daughters, Virginia L. Gambill and Kathy Kirk, both of Paintsville; two brothers, Frank Gambill of Berea and Marvin Gambill of Cincinnati, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Revs. Wayne Fields and Jimmy Jennings officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Paul Harman
1933-2000
Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Paul Henry Harman, 67, who died Thursday, December 21, at his Paintsville residence.
Mr. Harman was born January 26, 1933, in Johnson County, to the late Will Green and Delphia Blair Harman. He was a carpenter and a Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are two daughters, Nannette S. Robinson and Brandie Harman, both of Paintsville; four sons, Charlie L. of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Timothy Paul of Mount Gilead, Ohio, Garry of St. Paul, Indiana, and Linzie Joe of Lawrenceville, Georgia; two brothers, Arthur Harman of Leander and Will Green Harman of Salyersville; two sisters, Edith Ward of Salyersville and Delphia J. Jackson of Staffordsville; and six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 24, at Paintsville Funeral Home, with Revs. Roger Hill and Danny Ward officiating.
Burial followed in Mary Sue Harman Cemetery.

Loy Williams
1903-2000
Staffordsville resident Loy Williams, 96, died Thursday, December 21, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Williams was born December 22, 1903, in Johnson County, to the late Luke P. and Dora Wheeler Williams. He was retired from C & O Railroad.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie McKenzie Williams; two daughters, Mellana Sharyl Cantrell of Staffordsville and Janis Blanton of Springfield, Ohio; one sister, Dixie Fyffe of Springfield, Ohio; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 24, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Carlos Preston, Kenneth Trimble and Willard Castle officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
