Mr. McCarty was born September 9, 1953, in Johnson County, to Jack McCarty and Eula Horne Sammons. He was employed by Continental Conveyor & Equipment Company.
Surviving are his wife, Marissa Jo Martin McCarty; his mother; one son, Jerry Cecil McCarty of Lucasville; one daughter, Stacy Marie McCarty of Varsailles; one brother, Johnny McCarty of Meally; and two sisters, Jackie Crum of Williamsport and Nellie Ratliff of Marion, Ohio.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel will be Richard Williams and Keith Horne.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Joe Wells Jr.
1920-2001
Retired miner Joe Wells Jr., 80, died Monday, January 29, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Wells was born April 16, 1920, in Johnson County, to the late Joe D. and Lilly Mae Webb Wells. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Roy Neil Wells.
Surviving are his wife, Hilda Katherine Idigpio Wells; four sons, Thomas Earl, David R. and Brian Keith Wells, all of Daniels Creek, and Edward Wells of Williamsport; one daughter, Lois Jean Wells Collins of East Point; three brothers, Herbert and Everett Wells, both of Daniels Creek, and George Wells of Defiance, Ohio; two sisters, Geraldine Cassidy of Lexington and Josephine Cassidy of Dayton, Ohio; and 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Larry Joe Bayes officiating.
Burial followed in Wells-Webb Cemetery at Van Lear.
Willard Sparks
1931-2001
Former Johnson County resident Willard Sparks, 69, of Sunbury, Ohio, died Wednesday, January 31, at St. Ann’s Hospital, Westerville, Ohio.
Mr. Sparks was born May 7, 1931, in Johnson County, to Gusta Sparks and the late Othie Sparks. He retired from Galena Brick Yard and Nestle’s Corp in Sunbury, attended Centerburg Enterprise Baptist Church and Kerz Enterprise Baptist Church of Flat Gap and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jo McKenzie Sparks, in 1997; and a daughter, Judith Darlene Sparks, in 1989.
Surviving are his mother, Gusta Sparks of Flat Gap; his second wife, Neva Mae Ramey Sparks; one son, Willard F. Sparks of Sunbury; three daughters, Rita Hinkle and Angel Arthur, both of Sunbury, and Diana Arms of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; three stepsons, Ford Allen Sparks and Billy Ray Sparks, both of Flat Gap, and Russell Sparks of Salyersville; two stepdaughters, Jo Ann Thompson and Gwen McKenzie, both of Flat Gap; two brothers, Darvin Sparks of Mt. Vernon and Russell Sparks of Sunbury; four sisters, Betty Evans, Anna Edwards and Judy Lewis, all of Sunbury, and Sue Lemasters of Marion, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, one great-grandson, nine step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Saturday, at 2 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home of Sunbury, with Rev. Crate Sparks officiating.
Burial will follow in Trenton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Cambridge Arnett
1934-2001
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Saturday, for Cambridge Birdine “C.B.” Arnett, 65, who died January 31, at his Salyersville residence.
Mr. Arnett was born March 2, 1934, in Magoffin County, to the late Tipton and Mary Arnett. He was a retired carpenter and farmer.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Hargis Arnett; and four sisters, Angeline Montgomery, Sylvia Arnett, Elsie Vanderpool and Josephine Miller.
Surviving are his wife, Garnett Sue Craft Arnett; two sons, Guy Edward and Jerry Birdine Arnett, both of Salyersville; three daughters, Angela Kay Caudill of Hager Hill, Mary Sue Arnett of Salyersville and Judy Minix of Morehead; one brother, R.C. Arnett of Royalton; three sisters, Georgia Arnett, Louise Marshall and Martha May, all of Salyersville; and five grandchildren.
Officiating at 11 a.m. services at Magoffin County Funeral Home Chapel will be Hershell Wright.
Burial will follow in Tip Arnett Cemetery at Sublett.
Edith Tackett
1926-2001
Whitehouse resident Edith Christine Litton Dutton Tackett, 74, died Friday, January 26, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Tackett was born April 8, 1926, in Johnson County, to the late Elbert and Sarah Ellen Litton. She was a retired nurse.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robie Tackett, in 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Danny Bayes of Whitehouse and Keith Short of Derby, Kansas; one daughter, Mary Dutton France of Whitehouse; one brother, Hillard Litton of Timpey, Arizona; and 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 28, at Hammond Freewill Baptist Church, with Isaac Rowland officiating.
Burial followed in Tackett Family Cemetery at Whitehouse.
William Greer
1914-2001
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 27, for William Calvin Greer, 86, who died Thursday, January 25, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Greer was born October 25, 1914, in Johnson County, to the late Samuel and Naomi Burke Greer. He was a retired employee of Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel.
Surviving are his wife, Gertrude Crider Greer; three sons, William Ronald Greer of Tutor Key, Paul Roger Greer of Paintsville and Gary Greer of Little Paint Creek; two daughters, Alice Frazier of Thelma and Peggy Hall of Van Lear; one brother, Guy Greer of Lexington; two sisters, Evelyn Flanery of Allen and Madge Rutledge of Lexington; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Officiating at services on Saturday were Dave Flanery and Dick VanHoose.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Nellie Murray
1919-2001
Former Johnson County resident Nellie Murray, 81, died Sunday, January 28, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Grundy, Virginia.
Mrs. Murray was born May 25, 1919, at River, to the late Merida and Bell Castle Brown. She was a waitress.
Surviving are four sons, James U. and Thomas H. Murray, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Allen Dean Murray and Ocie Murray Jr., both of Honaker, Virginia; one daughter, Barbara Boyd of Honaker; one brother, Langley Brown of Wittensville; and nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Ellis Hamilton officiating.
Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Stambaugh.
Flora Caldwell
1916-2001
Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Flora Ratliff Caldwell, 84, who died Wednesday, January 24, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Caldwell was born February 20, 1916, in Johnson County, to the late Harvey and Nola Hampton Ratliff.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Q. Caldwell, in 1978.
Surviving are two sons, Bobby Caldwell of Stambaugh and Billy Caldwell of Groveport, Ohio; four daughters, Betty Meade of Stambaugh, Barbara Dale of Louisa, Molly Carter of West Jefferson, Ohio, and Shirlene Clark of Vero Beach, Florida; and nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 27, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with James Kelly Caudill, Roger Jordan and Harold Stevens officiating.
Burial followed in Caldwell Family Cemetery at Stambaugh.
Howard Brown
1913-2001
Howard Brown, 87, died Wednesday, January 31, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Brown was born April 14, 1913, in Johnson County, to the late Joseph and Julie Robinson Brown. He was a retired core driller.
Surviving are his wife, Monnie Collier Brown; one son, Joe N. Brown of Winchester; and one grandson.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Harold Keaton and Dick VanHoose officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Michael Sparks
1954-2001
Former Johnson County resident Michael R. Sparks, 46, of San Francisco, California, died Sunday, January 14, at St. Mary’s Hospital, San Francisco.
Mr. Sparks was born August 8, 1954, in Johnson County, to Russell and Marjorie Persinger Sparks. He was retired from St. Mary’s Hospital and a member of St. Michael’s Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Estill and Clela Salyers Sparks and Ernest and Pearl Turner Persinger.
Surviving are one brother, Danny Sparks; one sister-in-law, Linda Sparks; and two nieces, Jessica and Jayme Sparks of Hager Hill.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, January 17, at St. Mary’s Hospital Chapel. Local services will be held Saturday, January 27, at 1 p.m. at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with visitation two hours prior to services.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Opal Goble

Funeral services will be held today, Friday, for Opal Lee Goble, 87, who died Wednesday, January 24, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Goble was born March 6, 1913, at Auxier, to the late Jerry and Nola Crider Goble.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred C. Goble; one daughter, Cleda Eleanor Lawson; one brother, Roma Goble; one sister, Myrtle Goble Childers; and one grandchild.
Surviving are one son, Freddie L. Goble of Prestonsburg; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Officiating at 2 p.m. services at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin will be Rev. George Love.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Madge Sparks
1903-2001
Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Madge Sparks, 97, who died Friday, January 19, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Sparks was born June 13, 1903, in Johnson County, to the late Jay Lee and Elizabeth Salyer Salyer.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Sparks.
Surviving are four sons, James Haston Sparks of Westerville, Ohio, Hobert Sparks Jr. of Delaware, Ohio, and Cecil Ray and Marion Eugene Sparks, both of Sunberry, Ohio; one daughter, Nancy Sue Wheeler of Staffordsville; and 15 grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Ellis Hamilton and Adam Wade Sparks officiating.
Burial followed in Sparks Cemetery at Flat Gap.
Don Riffe
1969-2001
Don Michael Riffe, 31, died Saturday, January 20, at his Paintsville residence.
Mr. Riffe was born June 13, 1969, in Williamson, West Virginia, to Lou Riffe Tackett and the late Don Cassady Riffe. He was a HVAC service technician at Fannins’ Plumbing.
Surviving are his wife, Brandi Maynard Riffe; his mother; and one daughter, Cassidy Michaela Riffe of Paintsville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Southie Fannin Jr. officiating.
Burial followed in Cline Cemetery at Inez.
Betty Robinson
1927-2001
Paintsville resident Betty Ailene Ealey Robinson, 73, died Wednesday, January 17, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Robinson was born October 14, 1927, in Johnson County, to the late George and Sudie Trimble Ealey. She was an employee of Bell Telephone.
Surviving are her husband, Billy Robinson Jr.; two sons, Michael “Bud” and Ronald “Ron” Robinson, both of Paintsville; one brother, Chat Ealey of Florida; one sister, Ruie Reed of Oil Springs; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Darrell Ratliff officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
