Retired merchant Dora Lemaster Adams, 87, died Friday, February 23, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Adams was born November 10, 1913, in Magoffin County, to the late Luther and Sola Patrick Lemaster Wheeler.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Toy Adams, in May 1975; and a son, Billy Ray Adams.
Surviving are one son, Roger Lee Adams of Paintsville; two daughters, Betty Lou Adams Baldridge and Barbara Faye Adams Auxier, both of Paintsville; and four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Bill Underwood officiating.
Burial followed in Adams Family Cemetery at Salyersville.
William Daniels
1920-2001
Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Hager Hill was in charge of arrangements for William Daniels, 80, who died Saturday, February 24, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Daniels was born April 26, 1920, to the late Erchel and Grace Clark Daniel. He was a coal miner.
Surviving are two sons, Raymond and Danny Daniels, both of West Van Lear; three stepsons, Fred and Vencil Ratliff, both of West Van Lear, and James Daniel of Staffordsville; two stepdaughters, Patricia Perkins of Paintsville and Joyce Hughes of Tampa, Florida; three sisters, Mae Preston and Francis Daniels, both of Tutor Key, and Helen Cordell of Columbus, Ohio; and 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 26, at Staffordsville Freewill Baptist Church, with Mike Blanton and Doug Crider officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Anna Castle
1942-2001
Van Lear resident Anna Castle, 58, died Friday, February 23, in Lexington.
Mrs. Castle was born June 16, 1942, in Johnson County, to the late James Henry and Allie Cantrell Salyer.
Surviving are her husband, Rev. Jerry Castle; one son, Jerry L. Castle Jr. of Van Lear; one daughter, Robin Castle Ferguson of Van Lear; four brothers, James and Jesse Salyer, both of Flat Gap, Cozy Salyer of Crockett and Noah Salyer of Huntington, West Virginia; four sisters, Manda Salyer and Esta Johnson, both of Flat Gap, Gay Salyer of West Virginia and Moncie Vickers of Dandridge, Tennessee; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Upper Room Church, with William P. Perkins and Jimmy Jennings officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Herbert Whitaker
1983-2001
Herbert Wesley Whitaker, 17, died Wednesday, February 14, at his East Point residence.
Mr. Whitaker was born October 10, 1983, in Floyd County, to Herbert and Delorse Kaye Whitaker. He was a student.
Surviving are his parents; one sister, Rebecca Kaye Whitaker of East Point; maternal grandmother, Elsie Dotson; and paternal grandparents, John and Mildred Whitaker.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 17, at Whitaker Freewill Baptist Church, East Point, with Revs. Hubert Slone and Richard Greene officiating.
Burial followed in Whitaker Family Cemetery at East Point, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Jeanne Wheeler
1928-2001
Paintsville resident Jeanne Wheeler, 73, died Saturday, February 17, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Wheeler was born January 9, 1928, in Pikeville, to the late Robert and Lucille Reynolds Miller. She was a social worker.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles O. “Buzzy” Wheeler; one daughter, Jennifer Lind Wheeler; and her stepfather, Edward Dudley Gilkerson.
Surviving are three daughters, Sara Blair of Paintsville, Melinda Wheeler of Georgetown and Amanda Castaneda of Indianapolis, Indiana; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at First Baptist Church, with Rev. Donnie Patrick officiating.
Burial followed in Mayo Memorial Cemetery at Paintsville, with Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Betty Cox
1934-2001
Paintsville native Betty Pack Cox, 66, died Sunday, February 18, at Pattie A. Clay Hospital.
Mrs. Cox was born October 4, 1934, to the late William Martin and Mary Lester Pack. She attended Kirksville Christian Church, was host of “Let’s Talk” Radio show on WEKY in Richmond in the late 1960s and was editor and co-owner of Madison County Newsweek in the 1970s. She also wrote for the Lexington Herald, Courier Journal and The Richmond Daily Register.
Surviving are her husband, James M. Cox; one son, J. Macklin Cox of Lexington; one daughter, Terry Cox Epps of Kingwood, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Home, with J. Donald Graham officiating.
A private burial will be held at a later date.
Basil Blair
1928-2001
Former Johnson County resident Basil Blair, 72, died Friday, February 16, at Mt. Carmel West Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Blair was born March 25, 1928, at Barnetts Creek, to the late Lacy and Lelia Baldwin Blair. He was retired from Goodyear Atomic Corporation of Piketon, Ohio, was baptized at the Barnetts Creek United Baptist Church in January 1948, was ordained to the ministry in January 1961 and was a member of Beaver Valley United Baptist Church.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Sue Blair.
Surviving are his wife, Madge Hitchcock Blair; two daughters, Karen Logan of Findlay, Ohio, and Judy Driscoll of Ashland, Ohio; three brothers, Tilman of Dayton, Ohio, Francis of Lucasville, Ohio, and Norman of Enon, Ohio; three sisters, Maola Burchett of Wittensville, Naomi Burchett of Stambaugh and Viola Jones of Dayton; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Beaver Valley United Baptist Church, with Elders Denver Caudill, Douglas Ward, Patrick Gilliland and Bob Hacknie officiating.
Burial followed in Waverly Evergreen Union Cemetery, with Boyer Funeral Home Inc. of Waverly, Ohio, in charge of arrangements.
Darrell Kilgore
1938-2001
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 18, for Darrell Kilgore, 62, who died Friday at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Kilgore was born October 9, 1938, in Floyd County, to the late Woodford Kilgore and Hazel Preston Kilgore Tackett. He was a self-employed painter.
Surviving are his wife, Pina VanHoose Kilgore; two sons, Darrell Dean Kilgore of Hager Hill and David Michael Kilgore of Paintsville; two daughters, Jeanetta Kilgore and Anita Runyon, both of Tutor Key; one brother, Clyde Tackett of West Virginia; three sisters, Marsha Conley and Linda Clark, both of Fairborn, Ohio, and Ruth Ann Perry of Pierston, Indiana; and three grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Preston Funeral Home Chapel was Clarence Lemaster.
Burial followed in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery at Staffords-ville.
James Spriggs
1933-2001
James D. Spriggs, 68, of Northridge, Ohio, died Friday, February 16.
Mr. Spriggs was born January 19, 1933, at Boons Camp. He was retired from Dayton Walther.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Ward.
Surviving are his wife, Charleene Spriggs; two daughters, Donna Larrick and Deborah Spriggs; two brothers, Douglas and Phillip Spriggs; one sister, Virginia Kozee; and two grandsons.
Funeral services were held Monday at George C. Martin Funeral Home of Dayton, Ohio, with Rev. Lonnie Marshall officiating.
Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Aaron Cantrill
Aaron Thomas Cantrill, 21, of Casselberry, Florida, formerly of Paintsville, died Thursday, November 30, 2000.
Mr. Cantrill attended Johnson County Schools, Our Lady of the Mountains and Paintsville City Schools through seventh grade before moving with family to Debary, Florida. He attended Deltona High School and Daytona Beach Community College where he received his air conditioning technician certificate. He was an air conditioning technician for Comfort Air of Deland, Florida.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Henry and Libby Cantrill of Paintsville and Paul E. Castle of Thealka.
Surviving are his father, Michael Cantrill of Casselberry; stepmother, Anne Cantrill of Casselberry; mother, Rene Castle of Hollywood, Florida; stepfather, Charles Billie-Hiers Sr. of Hollywood; one sister, Rendi Queen of Pensacola, Florida; two stepsisters, Beth Jacobs of Casselberry and Stephanie Philpott of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; two stepbrothers, Nat Jacobs of Winter Park, Florida, and Billie Hiers of Hollywood; and grandparents, Abby and Ken Durnbaugh of Sun City, Arizona.

Janet Tackett

Janet Tackett, 57, died Tuesday, February 19, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Tackett was born January 6, 1944, in Johnson County, to Ollie Booth Wiley and the late Ottis Wiley.
Surviving are her husband, George Dennis Tackett; her mother; four sons, Gilbert, Delbert and Paris Tackett, all of River, and Dennis Tackett of Harold; two daughters, Arlene Pennington of Flat Gap and Darlene Caldwell of River; two brothers, Ottis Wiley Jr. and James David Wiley, both of Dayton, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, at 11 a.m. at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Ellis Hamilton and David Meek officiating.
Burial will follow in Tackett Cemetery at River.
Roy VanHoose
1905-2001
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, for Roy VanHoose, 95, who died Monday, February 12, at his Paintsville residence.
Mr. VanHoose was born October 16, 1905, in Johnson County, to the late Noah and Martha Blair VanHoose.
Surviving are two daughters, Patsy Miller of Paintsville and Mary Jo Blackburn of Pikeville; two sisters, Mary Hope Walker of Louisville and Josephine Howe of Landrum, South Carolina; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Hager Hill will be Dr. Charles Milam.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Lawson Patrick
1919-2001
Lawson Patrick, 81, of Mount Sterling, died Wednesday, February 7, at Mary Chiles Hospital.
Mr. Patrick was born May 19, 1919, in Magoffin County, to the late Malcolm and Myrtle Reed Patrick. He was a retired compressor operator for Tennessee Gas, member of Reid Village Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran, having served during WW II.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Ulery Patrick; two sons, James E. Patrick of Paintsville and Danny Patrick of Charleston, South Carolina; two daughters, Judie Rech of Mount Sterling and Patti Lauver of Columbia, South Carolina; four brothers, Norman Patrick of Winchester, William Patrick of Florence, Alabama, Kenneth Patrick of Jeffersonville and Don Patrick of Mount Sterling; two sisters, Peggy Fitzwater and Lena Rae Stephens, both of Mount Sterling; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held February 10 at Herald and Stewart Home for Funerals in Mount Sterling, with Rev. Gary Conner officiating.
Burial followed in Mann Cemetery.
Wince Walters
1910-2001
Offutt resident Wince Walters, 90, died Tuesday, February 13, at his residence.
Mr. Walters was born October 22, 1910, in Johnson County, to the late Taulbee and Laura Spriggs Walters. He was a coal miner and carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, Pearl Young Walters; one son, Steven Wince Walters of Offutt; one daughter, Janice A. Wiley Getman of New Orleans, Louisiana; two sisters, Audrey Faye Ward of Offutt and Nannie Belle Hall of Indiana; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, at 11 a.m. at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Shadie Lee Walters, Claude Mollett and Flem A. Arrowood officiating.
Burial will follow in Ben Young Cemetery at Offutt.
Aubrey Collier
1936-2001
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, for Aubrey Collier, 64, of Flat Gap, who died Tuesday, February 13, at Three Rivers Medical Center, Louisa.
Mr. Collier was born June 20, 1936, in Lawrence County, to the late John N. and Emily Fyffe Collier. He worked in maintenance at the Carl D. Perkins Rehabilitation Center.
Surviving are his wife, Willodene Keaton Collier; and one sister, Florence Marie Collier Wagoner of Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Christian Union Church, Keaton, will be Talmage Cantrell and Elzie Kesinger.
