Shade Blanton, 73, died Monday, March 26, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Blanton was born March 4, 1928, in Johnson County, to the late Harry and Cora Saylor Blanton. He was a general labor with Williamette Paper Products Co. and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was also preceded in death by two wives, Beulah Blanton and Lena Blanton; and a daughter, Venita Blanton.
Surviving are three sisters, Bess Bayes and Minnie Spaudling, both of Ashland, and Martha Souder of Florida.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Lonnie Salyer officiating.
Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
John Penix Sr.
1920-2001
Meally resident John Penix Sr., 80, died Friday, March 23, at his residence.
Mr. Penix was born May 18, 1920, in Johnson County, to the late John C. and Stella Dutton Penix. He was a retired miner.
Surviving are his wife, Velva Crum Penix; one daughter, Lillie Ward of Meally; two brothers, Joe Penix of Wittensville and Port Penix of Wabash, Indiana; and seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Meally Church of Christ, with Arville Short officiating.
Burial followed in Ward Cemetery at Boons Camp, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mabel Newmiller
1922-2001
Former Johnson County resident Mabel Newmiller, 78, of Mt. Sterling, died Tuesday, March 27, at her residence.
Mrs. Newmiller was born August 12, 1922, in Johnson County, to the late Floyd and Elizabeth Meade Williams.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Newmiller, on December 7, 1989; one sister, Hazel McCarty; and a brother, Floyd Williams Jr.
Surviving are one son, Harlan F. Slavens of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Joy McCarty of Paintsville, Florence Myers of Columbus, Ohio, and Wanda Stapleton of Mt. Sterling; and two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, at Porter Funeral Home, Mt. Sterling, with Rev. Jim Blankenship officiating.
Burial will follow in Darbyville Cemetery.
James Sparks
1955-2001
Retired plumber James Kenis Sparks (Jimbo), 45, died Tuesday, March 27, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Sparks was born December 3, 1955, to Ruth Spradlin Sparks and the late James Nelson Sparks. He was a Navy veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Sparks; his mother; one son, James Michael Sparks of Arizona; three daughters, Angel Leland and Tiffany Simon, both of Staffordsville, and Krista Denise Sparks of Arizona; one brother, John Sparks of Staffordsville; and three sisters, Cindy Butcher of Wittensville and Kathy Terry and Elizabeth Dennison, both of West Van Lear.
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, March 30, at 11 a.m. at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with J.M. Scott officiating.
Burial will follow in Sparks Family Cemetery at Staffordsville.
Effie Cook
1910-2001
East Point resident Effie Mae George Cook, 90, died Saturday, March 24, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Cook was born September 1, 1910, in Floyd County, to the late Thomas and Edith Stevens George.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry W. Cook, on June 8, 1984.
Surviving are one son, Thomas H. Cook Sr. of East Point; one daughter, Kathrine Mathis of Moorsville, North Carolina; two sisters, Mildred Branham of Prestonsburg and Thelma Thomas of South Shore; five grandchildren, Thomas H. Cook Jr., Timothy W. Cook, Kandace L. Cook, Wiley Thomas Mathis and Debra Jean Mathis; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Dave Flanery officiating.
Burial followed in George Family Cemetery at East Point.
Darvin Scotty Goble
1959-2001
Darvin Scotty Goble, 42, of Cow Creek Road, Prestonsburg, died Thursday, March 22, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born February 10, 1959, at Cow Creek, he was the son of Elijah “E.J.” and Mary Alice Lewis Goble of Cow Creek. He was a disabled laborer for East Kentucky Explosives.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by six brothers, Larry Ronnie Goble and Joseph Edward Goble, both of Cow Creek, James Darrell Goble of East Point, Burnis Dean Goble of Allen, Bradis Jay Goble of Harold, and Thomas Lee Goble of Paintsville; two sisters, Sally Ann Maynard and Rose Mary Stephens, both of Cow Creek; and 18 nieces and nephews, and five great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Lee Goble and Donald Ray Goble.
Funeral services were Sunday at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Collins, Nathan Lafferty and Delmon Hayton officiating.
Burial was in the Willie Goble Cemetery on Cow Creek Road.
Mable Ferguson
1919-2001
Mable Ferguson, 81, of Elkart, Indiana, died Wednesday, March 21, in Indiana.
Mrs. Ferguson was born August 18, 1919, in Lawrence County, to the late John and Irene Smith Keaton.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Hurston “Lum” Ferguson.
Surviving are two sons, Jay Ferguson of Paintsville and Jack Rigsby of Bristol, Indiana; one brother, Cody Keaton of Plain City, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Christian Union Enterprise Baptist Church, with Ellis Hamilton and Paul E. Keaton officiating.
Burial followed in Ferguson Cemetery at Keaton, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Abraham Chapman
1922-2001
Abraham Lincoln Chapman, 78, died Friday, March 23, at UK Medical Center.
Mr. Chapman was born July 26, 1922, in Martin County, to the late Rush and Rebecca Moore Chapman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and member of Inez Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife, Stella McGinnis Chapman; one son, William Chapman of Inez; five daughters, Rebecca Wefenstette of Paintsville, Marsha C. White of Inez, Irma Runyons and Pamela Muncy, both of Lovely, and Vera Lemaster of Martin; two brothers, John Chapman of Custer, Michigan, and Albert Chapman of Inez; three sisters, Emma Fraley, Edna Stepp and Wanda Cassady, all of Inez; and 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Inez, with James Maynard officiating.
Burial followed in Chapman Cemetery.
Hester Ratliff
1935-2001
Teachers aide Hester Ratliff, 65, died Friday, March 23, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Ratliff was born August 30, 1935, in Johnson County, to the late Mose and Laura Spradlin. She was a teachers aide in the Johnson County school system for several years and a member of Fairview Freewill Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Heaborn Ratliff.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda Ratliff Honeycutt of Staffordsville; and two sisters, Anna Kaye Webb of Flat Gap and Hazel Arms of Robinette, West Virginia.
Funeral services were held Monday at Fairview Freewill Baptist Church, with Revs. Donald R. Caudill and Howard Billiter officiating.
Burial followed in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffords-ville, with Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Velva Stratton
1913-2001
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 24, for Velva Stratton, 87, of Betsy Layne, who died Wednesday at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Stratton was born June 29, 1913, at Brushy Creek, to the late Lacy and Minnie (Ray) Lowe. She was a member of Betsy Layne Freewill Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bert Stratton.
Surviving are one son, Stanley Stratton of Betsy Layne; three daughters, Betty Hall of Betsy Layne, Helen Joyce Sylvester of Warren, Michigan, and Maxine Sutton of Troy, Michigan; three brothers, Winston Lowe of Hager Hill and Glen and Sam Lowe, both of Warren; and 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Officiating at services at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel was Rev. Tracy Patton.
Burial followed in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.
Phillip Harris
1943-2001
Phillip Morris Harris, 57, of Staffordsville, died Monday, March 26, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Harris was born November 28, 1943, in Paintsville, to Herbert Harris and the late Clista Wheeler Harris. He worked for Pepsi Cola of Staffordsville and was a United States Navy veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Anith Blanton Harris; one daughter, Sheila D. Burden of Flat Gap; one stepdaughter, Shawna O’brian of Prestonsburg; one stepson, Christopher O’brian of Keaton; two brothers, Stanley and Scotty Harris, both of Flat Gap; one sister, Darlene Pack of Paintsville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Beulah Whitaker
1919-2001
Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Beulah Whitaker, 81, who died Thursday, March 22, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Whitaker was born September 24, 1919, in Floyd County, to the late Kaleb and Zella Rice Whitaker.
Surviving are one brother, Albert Whitaker of East Point.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Whitaker Freewill Baptist Church, with Hubert Slone and Richard Green officiating.
Burial followed in Whitaker Family Cemetery at East Point.
Murl Collins
1930-2001
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, for Murl Collins, 71, who died Monday, March 26, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Collins was born January 17, 1930, to the late Ali and Sadie Collins Wells.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Martin Dallas Collins.
Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy Fannin of Hager Hill; two brothers, Sammie J. Wells of Van Lear and Ali Wells Jr. of Paintsville; seven sisters, Mary Rider of Paintsville, Doris Fannin of Van Lear, Lorraine Mollette of Allen, Emma Jean Caudill of Russell, Elleen Martin of Raceland, Cindy Morris of Ashland and Donna Rambo of Worthington; and two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel will be Rev. Garmon D. Preece.
Burial will follow in Wells Family Cemetery at Van Lear.
