Emerald Hay Salyers
1914-2009
Emerald Salyers was born January 11, 1914 on Pickle Fork in Staffordsville, Ky., to Smith Picklesimer and Chole Reed Picklesimer. Emerald passed away quietly at her home with her family by her side on March 21, 2009.
Emerald is survived by her daughter, Bettye and David McCarty of Mesquite, Texas, Jack and Brenda Salyers of Williamsport, Ky., Bill and Sandy Salyers of Paintsville, Ky., Gary and Shirley Salyers of Delaware, Ohio; daughter-in-law Jane Salyers of Oil Springs, Ky., and daughter-in-law Doris Salyer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Maxine Oliver of Franklin Furnace, Ohio.
Emerald is preceded in death by her parents, Smith and Chloe Picklesimer, her husband, Ray; daughter, Patty; her sons, Bobby, Joe, Paul; grandson Robert Borders; sister Victoria Williams; and brothers, Leroy and Martin Picklesimer.
Emerald married Ray Salyers on March 10, 1930, together they had eight children. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother. She was a homemaker for many years before she began working as a clerk in Cury’s Department Store in the early 1950’s, after her children were in school. She also worked for Pelphrey’s and Salyer’s Department Stores. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women in Paintsville, and also a member of Eastern Star and White Star.
Emerald was converted and baptized at Barnett’s Creek United Baptist Church on December, 18, 1927 during a revival led by Guy Preston and Winfrey Meek. She remained a member of this church until her death. Emerald lived her life for the Lord and everyone who knew her witnessed her faith. She loved her church and set an example for her children and grandchildren to follow. She enjoyed spending time with her family and often traveled to share holidays and special occasions with them.
Emerald will be greatly missed by her family and friends and will forever be remembered for her love and faith in the Lord.

Ralph R. Riddle
1917-2009
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 14, at 1 p.m. at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Ralph R. Riddle, 92, who passed away Monday, May 11, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville.
Mr. Riddle was born Jan. 10, 1917, in Mingo County, W. Va., son of the late Hatler and Esta Varney Riddle. He was a federal mine inspector and a U. S. Air Force veteran.
He was also preceded in death by his wife Nancy Rhea Shawver Riddle, and a daughter, Carol Pauley.
He is survived by two sons, Donald and Kyle Riddle of Paintsville; two daughters, Roberta (Roy) Dean of Huntington, W. Va., and Janice (Tim)Temple of Abilene, Tex.; one brother, Jack Riddle of Beckley, W.Va.; one sister, Mary (Abe) Hymore of Williamson, W. Va., one sister-in-law, Jean Riddle of Elyria, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Tim Temple with burial was at Ridgelawn Memorial Park in Huntington, W.Va.

Lestia Adams
1932-2009
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 2, 1 p.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Lestia Adams, 76, of Flat Gap, who passed away Wednesday, April 29 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville.
Mrs. Adams was born Aug. 24, 1932 in Johnson County, daughter of the late Mart and Novia Cantrell Adams. She was a homemaker.
She was also preceded in death by one son, William Dean Adams, and one brother, Willard Adams.
Surviving are three daughters, Marie (Jimmie) Penning-ton, Betty (Ellis) Pennington, and Dana (Anthony) Davis, all of Flat Gap; one brother, James Adams of Barnetts Creek; five sisters, Esta Penix and Christine Meade, both of Hager Hill; Linda Mollette of Ohio, Edna Ramey of Glat Gap, and Pauline Jaynes of Falcon; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The service was officiated by Kenny Pelphrey, with burial in the Adams cemetery at Flat Gap.
Arrangements under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Delores Ann Fraley
1936-2009
Funeral services were held Friday, May 8, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Delores Ann Fraley, 73, of Flat Gap, who passed away Wednesday, May 6, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
Ms. Fraley was born March 6, 1936, in Ashland, daughter of the late Carl Raymond Fraley and Vesta Mae Creech Fraley. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by one son, Danny (Gigi) Stewart, Jr., Flat Gap; two daughters, Brenda (Daniel) Languedoc, Paints-ville, and Linda (David) Wilder of Flat Gap; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Lindsey Meade, with burial at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville.

Dennis Franklin May Sr.
1948-2009
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Dennis “Dee” Franklin May Sr., 60, of Lawrenceburg, who passed away Sunday, May 10 at his home.
Mr. May was born Oct 18, 1948 in Van Lear, son of the late Glen L. May and Hazel Marie Bowling May. He was a coal miner/truck driver and a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Foster May; two step sons, Kenneth Blackburn, Nicholasville, and Steve (Ruth) Blackburn, Harrodsburg; one step daughter, Laura Quire, Frankfort; one brother, Glen “Bud” (Martha) May, Van Lear; a special nephew, Charles Ray (Caroline) May, Paintsville; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and six step grandchildren.
The service was officiated by James Kelly Caudill, with burial at Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
Arrangements under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home, Paintsville.

Robert Lee Meade
1945-2009
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 15, at his residence on Dogwood Fork, Wittensville, for Robert Lee Meade, 63, who passed away at his residence on Monday, May 11.
Mr. Meade was born Dec. 20, 1945 in Floyd County, son of the late Hibbert and Kitt Mulkey Meade. He was chief deputy for the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, Ray, James and Danny Joe Meade; and one sister, Montana Callahan.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Faye Collins Meade; 10 sons, Denver (Brenda) Meade, Fallsburg, Thurman “Bo” (Lavone) Meade, Wittensville, Tojack (Donna) Meade, Virginia, Dean Taylor and Rebecca Sparks, Wittensville, Bowzer Meade, Paintsville, Bubby (Pauline) Meade, Louisa, Jamie Maxwell, Florence, Joey Meade, Pikeville, Nathaniel and Joshua Meade, Louisa; eight daughters, Jennifer (Jimmy) VanHoose, Urbana, Ohio, Debbie (Jack) Fitchpatrick, Fallsburg, Bambi (Brandon) Perkins, Grayson, April Rigney, Florence, Barbie Taylor, Washington Court House, Ohio, Teresa Brunty, Florence, Denise Demetroff, Akron, Ohio, Tonya Maxwell, Florence, and Connie Young, Kentucky;two brothers, Denver Eugene Meade, Chillicothe, Ohio, Gordon Meade, Columbus, Ohio;six sisters, Silvia Akers, Louisa, Reese Case, Brenda Kay Meade and Wanda Meade, all of Columbus, Ohio, Linda Meade, South Shore, Dorothy Meade, Lucasville, Ohio; 37 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
The service will be conducted by Jimmy Lemaster, with burial in the Meade Cemetery, Dogwood Fork, Wittensville.

Francis Music
1937-2009
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at Phelps & Son Funeral Home for Francis Music, 74, who passed away Wednesday, May 13.
Mrs. Music was born Feb. 17, 1937 in Johnson County, daughter of the late Phillip and Evelyn Griffith Howell.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Douglas Music; two sons, Phillip and Paul Music. one sister, Phyllis Osborne; and one brother, Charlie Howell.
She is survived by one son, Douglas A. Music of East Point; one grand daughter, Leann Richmond of Virginia; and her companion, Buster Adams of Louisa.
The service will be officiated by Kenny Pelphrey, with burial in the Howell-Griffith cemetery at East Point.
Arrangements under the direction of Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville, where friends may call all day Friday.

Landon Tackett
1923-2009
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 14, noon at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington, Ky., for Landon Tackett, 86, of Lexington, formerly of Johnson County, Ky., who passed away Friday, April 10 at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington.
Mr. Tackett was the son of the late Ulysses “Liss” and Elvira Tackett. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Vogel, Danny Randall, and Darlin Manuel Tackett; and one sister, Helen Fern Tackett. He was a retired teacher of industrial electricity at Mayo State Vocational School, and a WWII U.S. Army veteran, and a Kentucky Colonel.
Surviving are his wife, Esta Mae Martin Tackett of Lexington; two sons, Leslie Tackett of Lancaster, Ky., and Melvin (Yvonne) Tackett of Lexington; one daughter, Margie (Michael) Patton of Lexington; two sisters, Ellen M. Hudson of Virgie, Ky., and Ethel Florene Taylor of Pikeville, Ky.; and three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The service was officiated by the Rev. Ray Wheeler, with burial in the Camp Nelson National cemetery with full military honors.
Arrangements under the direction of the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home of Lexington.
