Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 20, 1 p.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Charles Leon “Tobe” Castle, 64, of Wittensville, Ky., who passed away Monday, Nov. 17 at Corner Stone Hospital of Huntington, W.Va.
Mr. Castle was born Aug. 25, 1944 in Johnson County, Ky., son of the late Linzie Castle and Edna Mae Isaac. He was a disabled coal miner. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Culwell.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Castle; one son, James Wesley Culwell of Willington, Ohio; two daughters, Lisa Ann Williams and Debra June Dixon, both of Nippa, Ky.; four brothers, Willie Ray and Tom Castle, both of Nippa, Walter Lee Castle of Flat Gap, Ky., and Jim Bo Castle of River, Ky.; eight sisters, Lou Vernia Burchett and Louise Burchett, both of Stambaugh, Ky., Okie Jane Toner of Ohio, Joyce Stambaugh of Flat Gap, Ky., Marilyn Stambaugh of Flat Gap, Pearline Blanton of Nippa, Pauline Caldwell of Thealka, Ky., and Edna Faye Spizy of Oklahoma; and four grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Gail Music and Tommy VanHoose with burial in the Castle Family Cemetery.

Vonda Castle VanHoose
1915-2008
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, Nov. 21, 11 a.m. at the Tom’s Creek Free Will Baptist Church for Vonda Castle VanHoose, 93, of Nippa, Ky., who passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18 at Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville, Ky.
Mrs. VanHoose was born May 27, 1915 in Johnson County, Ky., daughter of the late Conn Castle and Beulah Akers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Estill “Yeller” VanHoose.
Surviving are two sons, Edgar “Dick” (Patty) VanHoose of Paintsville, and Ernest “Ernie” (Norma Jean) VanHoose of Denver, Ky.; one daughter, Alice Jewell VanHoose Stambaugh of Nippa; two sisters, Ruth Mucklow of Wiley Branch, Ky., and Numa Daniels of Nippa; and seven grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
The service will be officiated by James Kelly Caudill, with burial following in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, Ky.

Vineliea Mae Rose Sagraves
1928-2008
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, 11 a.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Vineliea Mae Rose Sagraves, 80, of Staffordsville, Ky., who passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18 at her residence.
Mrs. Sagraves was born Feb. 7, 1928 in Johnson County, Ky., daughter of the late Roy and Ethel Salyer Rose. She was a homemaker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Sagraves.
Surviving are one son, Danny (Elizabeth) Sagraves of Maysville, Ky.; one brother, Edwin Rose of Flat Gap, Ky.; and one grandson, Aaron Sagraves.
The service will be officiated by Harry N. Frisby, with burial following in the Highland Memorial cemetery at Staffordsville.

William Paul Williams
William Paul “Pill” Williams of Gloucester, Va., passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Jan. 9, 2009.
Paul was born Sept. 8, 1929 in Paintsville, Ky., to Fannie and W.T. Williams. He started his business in 1954 in Hampton, Va., with his best friend and brother-in-law, Chat Ealey, as Ealey and Williams Plaster Contractors. Moving to Gloucester in 1968, he later started W.P. Williams Plaster Contractor. He was known as “The Plaster Man.” He retired in 1996.
Paul was an avid deer, rabbit, and raccoon hunter and was an honorary member of the James River Rod and Gun Club. Farming was his greatest hobby with mud-bogging his second. He loved raising pigs, chickens, cattle, beagle dogs, riding horses and gardening.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Margaret B. Williams; four daughters that he adored, Debbie Hoggard and husband Tommy of Lancaster, Terri Bonniville and husband William “Bubba” of Gloucester, Tina Nelson and husband Mike of Gloucester, and Lisa Daniels and husband Sherwood of Dutton; four granddaughters that he cherished beyond words, Kelly Bonniville Satterfield and husband Scott, Crystal Nelson, Kathryn Johnson and husband Chris, and Heather Daniels; two sisters, Sharon Meade of Paintsville, and Laura Blair of Waverly, Ohio; two brothers, Hobbie Williams of Paintsville, and Charles Williams of Maryland.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. W. Donald Ambrose were held 3 p.m. Monday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family greeted friends Monday prior to the service from 2-3 p.m. at the funeral home.
In memory of Paul, the family requests that contributions be given to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1417, Glouster, VA 23061.
Peggy Patton
1925-2009
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Peggy Patton, 83, of Paintsville, Ky., who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford, Ky.
Mrs. Patton was born May 6, 1925 in Floyd County, Ky., daughter of the late Henry and Dona Slone Shepherd. She was a retired self-employed merchant. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Patton.
Surviving are one son, Danny Ray Patton of Nicholasville, Ky.; two daughters, Brenda Joyce Hicks of Cool Ridge, W.Va., and Carleen Sue Tharp of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Rueben Shepherd of Lansing, Mich., and Rome Shepherd of Defiance, Ohio; one sister, Susan Richardson of Jackson, Mich.; and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The service will be officiated by Terry Lykins, with burial following in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, Ky.

Carroll A. Sturgill
1940-2009
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 11, 11 a.m. at the Little Mud Lick Church of God for Carroll A. Sturgill, 68, of Staffordsville, Ky., who passed away Friday, Jan. 9 at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mr. Sturgill was born May 12, 1940, son of the late Andrew and Frances Rose Sturgill. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon Sturgill of Staffordsville; two sons, Eric Sturgill of Staffordsville, and Jody Sturgill of Huntington, W.Va.; one daughter, Christie Wingfield of South Charleston, W.Va.; four brothers, Charles, Kenneth, Leslie, and Ronald Sturgill, all of Fort Gay, W.Va.; three sisters, Judy Bellomy of Prichard, W.Va., Jackie Holbrook and Barbara Kitchen, both of Fallsburg, Ky.; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The service was officiated by the Rev. Tobe Wheeler, and the Revs. Audie Murphy and Clayton Sturgill, with burial in the Johnson County Memorial cemetery at Staffordsville.

Linda Chaffins Blair

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 15, 11 a.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Linda Chaffins Blair, 53, of Salyersville, Ky., who passed away Tuesday, Mar. 13 at her residence.
Mrs. Blair was born May 14, 1955 in Grundy, Va., daughter of the late Matthew and Retha Lucille Chaffins. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, William Blair of Salyersville; three sons, Troy Lester of Williamson, W.Va., and Tye Stilner and Jessie Marino, both of Magoffin County, Ky.; five brothers, Donnie and Lucky Chaffins, both of Magoffin County, Lonnie and David Chaffins, both of Pike County, Ky., and Billy Dean Chaffins of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Rita Ratliff of Magoffin County, Brenda Chaffins of Alabama, Connie Charles of Bristol, Va., and Shirley Chaffins of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Grant Cantrell, with burial in the Blair cemetery on Stone Coal at Volga, Ky.

Jennie Lee Sluss

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 14, 11 a.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Jennie Lee Sluss, 78, of Dandridge, Tenn., formerly of Johnson County, Ky.
Mrs. Sluss was born Sept. 30, 1930 in Martin County, Ky., daughter of the late Leander Conley and Clara Gillespie Daniels. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jim Sluss. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Lloyd Sluss of Russellville, Tenn., and Tom (Debra) Sluss of Morristown, Tenn.; two daughters, Hazel Brown and Lisa (Tim) Burke, both of Dandridge; one sister, Ina Mae (Bonnell) Bowen of Kenova, W.Va.; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The service was officiated by Troy Duncan, with burial in the Highland Memorial Park cemetery at Staffordsville, Ky.
