Funeral services were held Sunday, July 18, for Jefferson "J.D." Bond, 58, who died July 16. Mr. Bond was born September 11, 1940, at Paintsville, to Helen and Guy Bond. He was a retired teacher for the Johnson County Schools.
Hurschell D. Spears
Hurschell D. Spears, 85, of Coal Grove, Ohio, died Saturday, July 17, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was born September 18, 1913, in River, the son of the late Everett and Sonoma Daniels Spears. He was a retired oven operator for Dayton Malleable Iron Company with 32 years of service. He was a member of the River United Baptist Church since 1930 and attended River schools. He had lived in the Ironton area since 1943.
Charles Russell Sparks
Charles Russell Sparks, 85, of Blaine, died Thursday, July 15, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Mr. Sparks was born March 5, 1914, to the late Lincoln and Jane Hale Sparks. He was a retired state highway employee and a member of the Cains Creek Free Will Baptist Church.
Peewee Jayne
Peewee Jayne, 70, died Saturday, July 17, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville. Ms. Jayne was born June 29, 1929, in Johnson County, to the late Carl Turner and Stella Mae Burchett. She was a retired store manager.
Betty Louise McClure
Betty Louise McClure, age 67, of Wittensville, died July 20, 1999 at her place of residence. She was born in Paintsville on July 6, 1932 to Dewey and Wilda McClure. The funeral will be held at Tom's Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Friday, July 23, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place Friday in the McClure Cemetery located in Wittensville, Ky. There will be visitation Friday after 8 a.m. until the time of service.
Judy D. Smith
Judy D. Smith, age 58, of Louisville (formerly of Palmyra), died at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at the Mt. Holly Nursing Facility in Louisville, Ky. She was born on February 11, 1941 to John Dills and Avanell Trimble Dills in Paintsville. Surviving are two sons, J. David Smith of Nashville and Mark A. Smith of Louisville. Her mother, Avanell, and four grandchildren also survive.
Kellam VanHoose
Kellam VanHoose, age 89, of Lowmansville, died at 9:00 a.m. at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa. He was born September 15, 1909 in Lawrence County to Oscar and Lizzie Boyd VanHoose. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Mae Osborne VanHoose; a son, Leonard VanHoose of Lowmansville; two daughters, Mary Lou Garland of Lowmansville and Betty Hebebrand of Perrysburg, Ohio; one sister, Marie Greene of Lowmansville; one grandchild, and nine great-grandchildren.
Zachary Nathaniel Spradlin
Zachary Nathaniel Spradlin, infant son of Tracey and Tonya Bowens Spradlin, died at 6:25 a.m., July 16, 1999 at the Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville. He is survived by his maternal grandparents, Sandra and Hubert Lee Bowens, and paternal grandparents, James Denny and Juanita Spradlin.
David Powers
David Ray Powers, 27, of Lancaster, formerly of Pickerington, died Friday, October 1, at Fairfield Medical Center.
He was employed at the Olive Garden in Lancaster.
Survivors include his parents, Ray and Jodi Powers; two sisters, Kim Powers and Kelly Fornash; his fiancee, Lindsay Green and their daughter, Kayte Powers; and one son, Damon Ward.
Burial was in the Betzer Cemetery, Carroll.
Liddie Castle
1908-1999
Liddie Castle, 91, died Saturday, October 2, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in West Virginia.
Mrs. Castle was born February 22, 1908, to the late James and Sarch Music Vanhoose. She was a member of the Pigeon Enterprise Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Castle.
Survivors include two sons, Vencil Castle and Ricky Castle; three daughters, Helen Bryant, Aletta Edmondson and Virginia Sluss; one brother, William Vanhoose; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Burial was in the Green Lawn Cemetery at Louisa.
Jannie Murray

Jannie Murray, 83, died Sunday, October 3, in Columbus, Ohio.
Born March 16, 1916, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Murray and Rebecca Porter.
Survivors include one son, Ronnie Murray; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Burial was in McClure Family Cemetery at Wittensville.
Walter Raymond "Cat" Preston

Walter Raymond "Cat" Preston, 87, died Monday, October 4, at St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.
Mr. Preston was born November 3, 1911, at River, to the late William James Preston and Myrtle Spears. He was a retired coal miner.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Preston; one daughter, Emma Lee Vanhoose; four stepdaughters; four stepsons; one brother, William James Preston, Jr.; three sisters, Barbra Franklin, Irene Parson and Stella Craig; and two grandsons.
Burial was in the family cemetery at Boons Camp.
Chastity Nicole Butcher

Chastity Nicole Butcher, 3 months old, died October 9, at Williamsport.
Chastity Nicole was born July 16 to Jeremy Allen and Nicole "Nikki" Bayes Butcher.
Surviving are her parents; one brother, Cody Mason Butcher; maternal grandparents, Larry and Debra Bayes; and paternal grandparents, Diana and Steve Butcher.
Burial was in Butcher Family Cemetery.

She was born April 6, 1913, to the late Frank and Edith Elizabeth Metz Tuzy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershell McAllister, and one son, William H. McAllister.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Ann Meade and Betty Lou Burke; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
