Irene Martin, 87, Henderson, died at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Fairway Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Evansville. A school teacher in Webster County for 30 years, she was a member of Wheatcroft Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Martin Sr., and two sons, Huston A. Martin and George Martin Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Penelope Coffey of Henderson; four sisters, Glenda Hill, Sue Oran and Nima Foster, all of Evansville, and Georgia Alexander of Providence; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home in Henderson. The Revs. Mark Martin and Warren Delling will officiate. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Clay. CLAY -- Leamon Blackwell, 77, Clay, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. He was a coal miner for more than 50 years. Survivors include his wife, Edith; one daughter, Debbie Syers of Providence; one son, Sherman Blackwell of O'Fallon, Mo.; two sisters, Betty Alexander of Clay and Patsy Holloman of Marion; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Anna "Marie" Rooney
Anna "Marie" Rooney, 73, Henderson, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Community Methodist Hospital. She was a charter member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Charles D.; one daughter, Sharon K. Bellew of Henderson; one son, Timothy Rooney of Henderson; three grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew. DIXON -- Delphia M. Branson, 97, Dixon, died at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1998, at her home here. A housewife, she was a member of Little Zion General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Choice Clyde Branson Sr., who died in 1984. Survivors include two sons, Darrel S. Charlotte Staples Risley, 82, Hebbardsville, died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Senior Citizens Nursing Home in Madisonville. She was a lifetime member of Bethel Baptist Church in Hebbardsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Preston Risley, who died in 1981. Survivors include three daughters, Betty Bingemer and Vickie Wallace, both of Henderson, and Nancy Royster of Hanson; two sons, Dorris Risley and William Risley, both of Hebbardsville; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Bertyn Arnett, who died March 12, 1993, and one daughter, Bessie Louise Ellis, who died Feb. 22, 1993. A retired coal miner, he was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 5484 and was a Korean War veteran. He was also a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, LaVerne; one daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Julie) Martin of Providence; and four grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Melton Funeral Home in Providence. James Douglas Blue
HANSON -- James Douglas Blue, 67, formerly of Henderson, died at 6:10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at his home here. He retired in 1993 as a welder from Joe Leasure and Son Machine Shop and was a member of Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Violet Johnson Blue; one daughter, Mrs. Jeffery (Sandra) Brinkley of Madisonville; three sons, Anthony Blue of Sebree, Duke Blue of Slaughters and Danny Blue of Hanson; two sisters, Shirley Bourland of Madisonville and Sharon Taylor of Henderson; two half-sisters, Darlene Ridgely of Nashville, Tenn., and Becky Cuellar of Henderson; three half-brothers, John Blue Jr. of Henderson and Larry Muckannan and Jerry Muckannan, both of Francisco, Ind.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie, and one son, Jack Hughes. Survivors include three daughters, Betty Meazle and Joyce Ressett, both of Providence, and Wanda Whitledge of Madisonville; two sons, Brian Hughes of Clay and Benny Hughes of Raton, N.M.; one sister, Naomi Schooner of Dearborn Heights, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Virginia `Sweets' Winters Jones
EVANSVILLE -- Virginia "Sweets" Winters Jones, 81, died at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at her home here. A native of Indianapolis, she was a member of Liberty Baptist Church where she served on the Mother's Board. She was a member of a social club called the Bridge Club, a former employee of the Detroit School Board and retired from the Dietary Department at Sania Methodist Hospital in Detroit, Mich. She was a 1936 graduate of Douglass High School in Henderson. Survivors include two sons, Frederick Jones Sr. of Ontario, Calif., and Michael Jones of Evansville; one sister, Marguerite Clancey of Henderson; two brothers, Elijah J. Winters of Milwaukee, Wis., and Everett Winters of Plano, Texas; six grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Liberty Baptist Church in Evansville. Virginia "Louise" Gibson
Virginia "Louise" Gibson, 77, Henderson, died at 6:46 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at Community Methodist Hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Patterson and Barbara Martin, both of Henderson; two sons, William "Sonny" Grant of Corydon and Charles Gibson Sr. of Henderson; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Survivors include his wife, Lois; three daughters, Michelle Ricketson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Patricia Underwood and Sharon Britt, both of Lebanon Junction, Ky.; three sons, John Ricketson of Morganfield, Benny Ricketson of Pride, Ky., and Allen Ricketson II of California; his mother, Lona Mae Ricketson of Sullivan; four sisters, Phylis Murrell of Morganfield, Joy Powers of Clay, Janice Walton of Salem and Emma Lou Harris of Sturgis; two brothers, Hank Ricketson of Sturgis and Thomas Ricketson of Sullivan; 16 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. J.B. "Dick" Holeman
STURGIS -- J.B. "Dick" Holeman, 83, died at 7:03 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at his home here. A World War II veteran, he owned and operated a car dealership in Sturgis for many years and later owned and operated Delta Materials. He served an eight-year term starting in 1949 as mayor of Sturgis and was a city councilman from 1947 to 1949. He was a member of the American Legion, having been appointed commander of the Riddle Post in 1959. He was also a member of Sturgis Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Rizpah Shrine Temple in Madisonville and served on the board of directors of Farmers State Bank, where he was chairman of the board for 13 years. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane; one daughter, Janis I. Reynolds of Charleston, W.Va.; two sons, J.B. Holeman Jr. of Greer, S.C., and John V. Holeman of Sturgis; one sister, Marianna Totty of Flat Rock, N.C.; and five grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sturgis Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Bert Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today and until service time Wednesday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis.
