Emogene Gifford Myers, 75, of Washington, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at 5:15 a.m., at Maysville Extended Care, following an extended illness.
Born February 10, 1927, in Robertson County, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Madie Cooper Gifford, and was the widow of William Davis Myers who died July 18, 2002. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, July 28, at Green Acres Cemetery at Washington. Rev. Gorman Parrish officiated. Truman Hobson
Truman W. Hobson, 58, of Sabina, Ohio, formerly of Firebrick and South Portsmouth, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home.
Born June 29, 1944, in Lawrence County, a son of the late A.J. and Eula Peterman Hobson. He was a carpenter and home builder.

Velma Willis
Velma O. Willis, 85, of Chillicothe, Ohio, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at 10:58 a.m., at Adena Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Born February 14, 1917, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph C. and Elva H. Ruark Reis. She was retired from Chilpaco. She was a member of United Methodist Church of Massieville and Salvation Army League of Mercy.

Sharon Rister
Sharon Nancy Cassidy Rister, 45, of Garrison, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Born August 19, 1956, in Greenup County, she was a daughter of William Cassidy of South Shore and the late Beulah Watkins Cassidy, and was the wife of John F. Rister. She was a homemaker and a member of Lloyd Ridge Pentecostal Church of God in Garrison.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 31, at Lloyd Ridge Pentecostal Church of God. Rev. Kenneth Potter officiated with burial in Dummitt Ridge Cemetery at garrison. Arrangements were under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.
Joseph McCane
Joseph Allen Mcane, 52, of Vanceburg, died Sunday, July 24, 2002, as a result of a fire at his home.
Born December 20, 1949, in Lewis County, he was a son of Sanford and Mary Kathryn Thurman McCane of Vanceburg, and long-time companion of Jill Litteral of Vanceburg. He was owner and operator of McCane's Collectibles and Computer Repair for ten years and was retired from Westinghouse as a production clerk in Mansfield, Ohio. He was vice-president of AFL-CIO Local 711 Electrical Workers in Mansfield, was a third degree black belt martial arts instructor, co-owner of Kwon Do and Ju Jitsu of Mansfield and owner of Ontario Tae Kwon Do in Ontario, Ohio. He was a member of the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce and Church of the Nazarene, and was a 1967 graduate of Lewis County High School.
Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 1, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Pastor Roger Seay and Barry Pettit officiated with burial in Muses Chapel Cemetery at Quicks Run.
Gladys Thurman
Gladys L. Fletcher Thurman, 83, of Garrison, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at her home.
Born December 5, 1918, in Portsmouth, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Minnie Penix Fletcher, and was the widow of William Thurman. She was a member of Bivens Chapel Church for 45 years and a member of DAV Auxiliary.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Bivens Chapel Church. Clifford Muse and Wilma Erwin officiated with burial in Black Oak Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Chapel in Garrison.
Otis Thurman
Otis Odney "Brigg" Thurman, 80, of West Portsmouth, Ohio, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at 3:05 a.m., at Southern Ohio Medical center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Born September 16, 1921, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Hargis and Emma Kinney Thurman, and was the widower of Cora Bell Armstrong Thurman, who died in 1958, and Lucy Irene Armstrong Lewis Thurman, who died in 1994. He was a cab driver for 19 years with Yellow Cab Co. in Portsmouth. He was a WWII US Army veteran.
Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 22, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Carl Stanfield and Rev. Jeanne Harris officiated with burial in Jones Cemetery at Glen Springs. Military graveside rites were accorded by American Legion James Flannery Post #276 of South Shore.
Ruth Ann Mofford
Ruth Ann Medley Mofford, 49, of Vanceburg, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at 11:17 p.m., at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Born October 7, 1952, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of the late Ova B. and Gladys Louise Applegate Medley, and was the wife of 32 years of Gary Mofford. She had been employed for 15 years at US Shoe and attended Church of the First Born at Slate Hollow.
Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Daniel Miller officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
Esther McGlone
Esther Bell Frazier McGlone, 58, of McGlone Creek at Olive Hill, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead.
Born March 20, 1944, in the Rooney area of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late James and Susie Jane McGlone Frazier, and was the wife of Robert McGlone. She was a homemaker and a former nurse's aide. She was a member of Kibbey Chapel Christian Holiness Church. She enjoyed crafts and was an avid listener of Bivens Chapel radio services.
Services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3, at Carter County Funeral Home and Service in Olive Hill. Pastor Wilma Clark Erwin and Bro. Mark Blankenship officiated with burial in Riley Cemetery at Olive Hill.
Ralph Davis Sr.
Ralph E. Davis Sr., 86, of Vanceburg, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 3:50 p.m., at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Born October 10, 1915, in Fullerton, he was a son of the late Hager Davis and Kathryn Winn Davis Cotton, and was the widower of Anna Louise Plummer Davis, who died in 1987. He was a self-employed businessman in Vanceburg for more than 35 years and was former sports director for WKKS Radio. He was a member of the Vanceburg Lions Club and was a Kentucky Colonel.
Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Rob Morton and Dr. Herb Bertram Jr. officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
Wayne Wheeler
Wayne G. Wheeler, 54, of Garrison, died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Born June 4, 1948, in Crab Orchard, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Garland Paris and Mariam Hawkins Wheeler, and was the husband of 28 years of Sarah Jane Perkins Wheeler. He was a self-employed construction worker.
Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 23, at Sullivan Funeral Chapel in Garrison. Bro. Robert Staggs officiated with burial in Skidmore Cemetery.
Virgil Mefford
Virgil Elden Mefford, 69, of Route 3 Vanceburg, died Sunday, November 24, 2002, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville, following an extended illness.
Born May 9, 1933, he was a son of the late Floyd Mefford and Addie Burriss Lykins, and was the husband of Wilma Hardy Mefford. He was a retired sales manager for Western-Southern Life Insurance Company in Maysville, where he was employed for more than 30 years. He was a Korean War US Army veteran and received the Purple Heart. He was chairman of Aills Christian Church board, chairman of the Licking Valley Advisory Board, chairman of Buffalo Trace Board and ombudsman for the five county area including Lewis County. He was a 3rd degree Master Mason and Past Master of Stone City Lodge #963 F&AM, 32nd degree Mason of Free Masonry Valley of Covington, Orient of Kentucky and past district deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Dr. Brad Walden officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
Forrest Monroe
Forrest Doc Monroe, 82, a resident of Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at 4:15 a.m., following a brief illness.
Born October 8, 1920, he was a son of the late Dudley and Mary Wise Monroe. He was a farmer.

Bobby Doyle
Bobby Russell Doyle, 59, of Tollesboro, died Friday, November 15, 2002, at University of Kentucky Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Born September 25, 1943, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Floyd and Mayme Latham Doyle, and was the widower of Helen Lewis Doyle, who died in 2000. He had been employed in heating and air conditioning.

Born November 8, 1930, in Lewis County, he was a son of Hester Rigdon Shaw of Lewis County and the late Emery Shaw. He was a farmer.

Jesse Fite
Jesse William Fite, 47, of Vanceburg, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.
Born October 1, 1955, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Jesse Julius and Thelma Evans Fite, and was the husband of Hazel "Punkin" Fite. He was a former logger with J.R. Brown Logging Company and a member of the Way of Life Church in Maysville.

Ollie Mack
Ollie Edward "Buster" Mack, 65, of Vanceburg, died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at 12:06 p.m., at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, following an extended illness.
Born October 31, 1937, at Vanceburg, he was a son of the late Ora Davis and Ollie Copper Mack Lamson, and was the husband of Freda Petty Mack. He was retired as a crane operator from M&O Marine Inc. in McKees, Pennsylvania.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Linda Sartin officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
Gene Wilburn
Gene Wilburn, 80, of Olive Hill, died Sunday, December 1, 2002, at his home.
Born September 8, 1922, in Carter County, he was a son of the late Rube and Ollie Kiser Wilburn, and was the husband of 63 years of Faith Valandingham Wilburn. He was retired as foreman of the Louisville Fire Brick Company in Grahn and was a deacon of the Grahn Hill Freewill Baptist Church for 24 years. He was a WWII Army veteran and received several decorations and citations, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Jimmy Barker, Sterlin Bolin and Jim Cavens will officiate with burial in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olive Hill. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday and anytime before services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Lenora Duncan
Lenora Faye Carroll Duncan, 70, of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, November 21, 2002, at University Hospital in Louisville.
She was a native of Carter County and was the widow of Estill "Sarge" Duncan. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Elizabethtown.

Born September 1, 1923, in Tussy, Oklahoma, she was a daughter of the late Garret and Clara Rodgers Presley, and was the widow of Russell McCann who died in 1991. She was retired after more than 20 years with US Shoe and was a member of Reynolds Chapel United Methodist Church in Black Oak.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Paul Pepoon officiated with burial in Muses Chapel Cemetery at Quicks Run.
James Diamond
James W. "Jimmy" Diamond, 57, of Grayson, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland.
Born March 12, 1945, in Boyd County, he was the son of Dovie Martin Diamond of Grayson and the late Ova Diamond, and was the husband of Ruth Dickens Diamond. He was owner and operator of Diamond gate and trailer Sales near Grayson for 27 years. He was a graduate of Boyd County High School and received auctioneer training and his auctioneer's license in Forth Smith, Arkansas at the age of 18. He dealt with all aspects of the cattle business for more than 30 years and was a member of the Cattleman's Association, the Willard Masonic Lodge #626, Trimble Lodge #145 in Grayson, El Hasa Shrine, the Scottish Rite and Oak Grove Church of Christ.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Burial was in East Carter County memory Gardens with graveside Masonic rites.
Joseph Mason
Joseph Paul Mason, 23, of Vanceburg, died unexpectedly Monday, November 25, 2002, at 10:18 a.m., in Morehead.
Born November 3, 1979, at Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the son of Larry E. and Karen Logan Mason of Vanceburg. He was a 1998 graduate of Lewis County High School and attended Morehead State University.
Services were conducted at Noon Friday, November 29, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. John Lewis officiated with burial in Mason Family Cemetery at Camp Dix.
Edward King
Edward D. King, 65, of Grayson, died Monday, November 25, 2002, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Born December 5, 1936, in Bim, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Marie Browning King, and was the husband of Kathy Hall King. He was retired from Monarch Marking in Dayton, Ohio, and was currently employed with Motor Carrier Solutions in Grayson. He had served in the US Navy.

Maxine Carlson
Maxine Carlson, 83, of Vanceburg, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, following an extended illness.
Born November 29, 1918, at Petersville, she was a daughter of the late Harry G. and Minnie F. Lykins Poynter, and was the widow of Norlin Carlson. She was past postmaster of the Petersville Post Office and also worked as a store clerk for King and Sullivan Drug Store in Vanceburg. She was a member of Petersville Christian Church and Lewis County Senior Citizens.
Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 29, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Kevin Cornette officiated with burial in Esham Cemetery at Petersville.
Ruby Cole
Ruby Marie Cole, 71, of Vanceburg, died Thursday, November 21, 2002, at Pleasant Hill Manor in Piketon, Ohio, following and extended illness.
Born April 19, 1931, at Sandy Springs, Ohio, she was a daughter of Eva Stone Butler of Vanceburg and the late Menifee Butler, and was the widow of Larry Cole. She was a retired machine operator for Consolidated Ceramic Company in Blanchester, Ohio.
Services were conducted Sunday, November 24, at 3:00 p.m., at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Jason Lykins officiated with burial in St. Patrick Cemetery at Fayetteville, Ohio.
Herbert Reis
Herbert Carl Reis, 83, of Vanceburg, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 3, 2003, at 7:40 a.m., at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.
Born November 16, 1919, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Joseph Carl and Elva Ruark Reis, and was the husband of 62 years of Ruth Willis Reis. He was a farmer and a field engineer in construction for 20 years and a member of the Fly Branch Church of Christ, where he served as an elder. He was also an active member of RSVP Senior Citizens program.
Services were conducted Sunday, April 6, at 2:00 p.m., at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Bro. Lynn Buddy White, Bro. Phil Cropper and Bro. Kevin Angel officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
Curtis Bush
Curtis D. Bush, 42, of Garrison, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at Scioto Memorial Hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Born June 8, 1960, in Garrison, he was a son of the late Charles Duard and Virginia Mae Hall Bush.

John Herbert Colegrove, 56, of Vanceburg, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at his home.
Born May 10, 1946, at Newberry, he was a son of Stella Thurman of Vanceburg and the late John Colegrove, and was the husband of Florence Ellen Colegrove. He was retired as a logger with Kimberly-Clark Corp. of Michigan.

Louivy Bare
Louivy Dean "Deanie" Bare, 37, of Maysville, died at 11:50 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
Born September 21, 1965, in Maysville, he was a son of Louivy and Evelyn Flinders Bare of Vanceburg, and was the husband of Dana Campbell Bare. He was half-owner of T&D Construction in Vanceburg and a member of Trinity Fish and Game Club.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Brell & Son Funeral Home in Maysville. Rev. Kerry Conlee officiated with burial in Elizaville Cemetery.
Charles Hughes
Charles Maurice Hughes, 89, of Tollesboro, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Hilltop Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Owingsville.
Born September 7, 1913, at Cabin Creek in western Lewis County, he was a son of the late Mackey and Rose Carpenter Hughes, and was the widower of Lucille Gabbard Hughes, who died in 1989. He attended Cottageville School at Cabin Creek, was a 1931 graduate of Tollesboro High School, and a 1936 graduate of Berea College. He taught and coached basketball at Tollesboro High School from 1936 to 1943. He returned to Tollesboro High School in 1948 as an agriculture teacher after earning his master's degree from Morehead State University. He also served as principal of both Tollesboro High School and Tollesboro Elementary, and retired in 1981. He was a charter president of the Tollesboro Lions Club, served on the policy committee for Licking Valley Head Start, was very active in the efforts to save Tollesboro High School, and was a member of Tollesboro United Methodist Church.
