James William Sallee, 64, of Tollesboro, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at his home.
Born November 4, 1938, at Dunville, Casey County, he was a son of the late Stanley C. and Margret Rector Sallee, and was the husband of Kathy Brayfield Sallee. He was retired from Laborers International Union Local 189, and owned and operated Sallee's Grocery in Tollesboro from 1980 to 1985, and Tollesboro Heating and Refrigeration from 1974 to 1990. He was a member of Dunnville Christian Church.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Bro. Donald Tipton officiated with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Bettie Bloomfield
Bettie Jean Bloomfield, 67, of Garrison, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at 10:15 p.m.
Born July 28, 1935, in Cumberland, Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Eddie and Lettie Lancaster, and was the widow of Clarence Albert "Pete" Bloomfield. She was retired from the 9 West Component Plant at Vanceburg.
Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 25, at Garrison Funeral Chapel. Bro. Kevin Angel officiated with burial in Skidmore Cemetery at Garrison.
Eileen Bloomfield
Eileen Bloomfield, 85, a resident at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at 7:22 a.m. at the center, following an extended illness.
Born August 26, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Clara Huber Schwoebel, and was the widow of Eugene Bloomfield who died in 1974. She was retires as a bookkeeper for Metropolitan Clothing Store in Dayton, Ohio, and had also worked for Kapers Collection Agency in Dayton.
Services were held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were under the direction of Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.
Hazel Thomas
Hazel Warder Thomas, 88, of Flemingsburg, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Fleming County Hospital.
Born May 9, 1915, in Pontiac, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late William and Belle Marshall Warder, and was the widow of Herbert Thomas who died in 1983. She was a cook for Canaan Schools for several years and also cooked at four local restaurants in Tollesboro for more than 30 years. She was a member of Tollesboro Christian Church.
Services were conducted Tuesday, July 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Bro. Steve Singer officiated with burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Mary Highfield
Mary "Juanita" Moore Highfield, 71, of Tollesboro, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at her home.
Born February 27, 1932, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Christine Toller Moore, and was the wife of Bruce Highfield.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Bro. Donald Polley officiated with burial in Mt. Tabor Cemetery at Ribolt.
Hazel Rolph
Hazel Rolph, 82, of Springfield, Ohio, formerly of Lewis County, died Saturday, July 19, 2003.
Born on Indian Creek, she was a daughter of the late Rush and Jennie Turner Bevins, and was the widow of James E. Rolph who died in 1997. She was retired from Robbins and Myers, and was a member of First Pentecostal Church of God in Springfield.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, at Jones-Kennedy-Zechman Funeral Home. Pastor David Miller officiated with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Oval Edington
Oval Clayton Edington, 91, of Vanceburg, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at 10:45 p.m. at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Born January 14, 1912, at Thor, he was a son of the late Samuel L. and Edith L. Stone Edington, and was the husband of 68 years of Marie Bloomfield Edington. He was a farmer and sawmill worker. He retired from Moore and White Lumber Company and had previously worked for Logan's Lumber Company and several other sawmills in the area. He was a member of Laurel Point Christian Holiness Church.
Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Forest Hedges officiated with burial in Morgan Cemetery at Head of Grassy.

Hazel Jarvis Bentley, 89, of Garrison, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at 4:20 a.m. at Kingsbrook Lifecare Center in Boyd County, following an extended illness.
Born July 16, 1914, in Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Nelse and Bertha James Jarvis, and was the widow of Luke Bentley Sr. She and her husband had co-owned and operated local businesses.

Florence K. Corns Clark, 66, of Rt. 2 Vanceburg, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville, following an extended illness.
Born August 31, 1936, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of the late Bart and Girley Spencer Campbell Corns. She was a homemaker.

Robert Sampson
Robert M. Sampson, 80, of Vanceburg, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the VA Hospital in Lexington.
Born April 8, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was a son of the late Orville and Hazel Morrison Sampson, and was the widower of Lucille Butler Sampson who died in 1996. He was an aviation engineer and a WWII Army veteran. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Wednesday Night Bowling League. He was of the Methodist faith.

Born May 21, 1977, in Morehead, she was a daughter of Avery Littleton of Vanceburg and Sandra Dale Hall Holt of Tollesboro, and was the wife of James Elliott of Vanceburg.

Donald Willis Sr.
Donald H. "Red" Willis Sr., 68, of Vanceburg, died unexpectedly at 7:58 p.m. on Monday, September 29, 2003, at his daughter's home.
Born November 30, 1934, in Garrison, he was a son of the late Hobert and Hazel Logan Willis. He was retired from the Lewis County Road Department and was a US Army veteran. He was a Kentucky Colonel.

Omar McDaniel
Omar "Red" McDaniel, 77, of Vanceburg, died Friday, September 26, 2003, at 3:15 a.m., at the VA Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, following an extended illness.
Born December 29, 1925, at Charters, he was a son of the late I.L. and Nellie Gray Gulley McDaniel, and was the husband of 34 years of Peggy A. Brown Baldwin McDaniel. He was self-employed as a businessman for 32 years as owner and operator of Lewis County Country Carpets in Maysville. He was a WWII US Army veteran and a member of Vanceburg Church of God. He was named a Kentucky Colonel this past June.
Services were conducted Sunday, September 28, at 2:00 p.m., at Vanceburg Church of God. Bro. Danny Overton and Rev. William H. Morgan officiated with burial in Bethel Cemetery at Ribolt. Military graveside rites were accorded by American Legion James L. Flanery Post #276, South Shore. Arrangements were under the direction of Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.
Claude Chaney
Claude M. Chaney, 68, of West Union, Ohio, died Monday, September 22, 2003, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Born November 16, 1934, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Alexander Cheatum and Emma Jane Hardin Chaney, and was the husband of Edna Lacy Chaney.

Born January 3, 1931, in Carter, he was a son of the late James and Sarah Hood McCleese. He was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a core driller with Rhodes and Associates in Lexington.

Born October 24, 1912, in Mason County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Lee and Lillie Berry Mers, and was the wife of 63 years of Wadsworth "Bub" Simpson. She had assisted her husband in his construction business and had also worked at the Carnation Cannery in Maysville for 15 years. She was a member of Church of the Nazarene in Maysville.

Born March 22, 1927, in Owosso, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Roswell C. and Frances Matthew McKalvia, and was the widow of Roy Kagle, who died in 1951, and John W. Thomas, who died in 1989. She was an office worker for Century 21 and Wheelers Amusements.

Rev. General Sherman L. Davis, 87, of Walnut Grove Ridge in Olive Hill, died Friday, November 28, 2003, at his home.
Born October 11, 1916, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Thomas J. and Eliza J. Young Davis, and was the husband of 55 years of Freda Howard Davis. He was retired from Cowden Manufacturing where he had worked in the shipping and receiving department, and was also a retired farmer. He was a member of the Christian Holiness Church and had been a minister for 54 years. He served with the Army Artillery Division in the Philippines during WWII and was a member of Grayson VFW Post #3705.
Services were conducted Monday, December 1, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Eddie Porter and Clyde Holbrook officiated with burial in Bowden Chapel Cemetery in Olive Hill. Military graveside rites were accorded by Olive Hill American Legion Post #138.
Harry Applegate
Harry Lee Applegate, 65, of Florissant, Missouri, formerly of Tollesboro, died Friday, November 14, 2003, following an extended illness.
He was a son of the late Orty David "Dave" and Beatrice "Bea" Saunders Applegate, and the wife of Antonietta "Toni" Crisci Applegate. He was retired after 24 years service with the US Army, serving in Vietnam. He was a member of VFW Post #8602 and Missouri Milers Volksmarch.
Services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 20, at Hutchens Mortuary in Florissant. Burial with military honors was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

He was a retired livestock dealer, auctioneer and farmer. He was a member of Olivet United Methodist Church and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Born December 10, 1921, in Greenup County, she was a daughter of the late George and Fannie Howard McGlone, and the widow of Bert McCleese, who died April 30, 1987. She was a homemaker and a member of the Carter City Church of Christ in Carter City.
