Lena G. Stewart, 72, of 1806 Kirkwood Rd., Salvisa, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 at her residence. She was born Sept. 28, 1925 in Madison County to the late Wilbert and Eula Teater. She was a retired seamstress for Sears and was a member of the Salem Christian Church. Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. James (Kimberly H.) McDaniel, Salvisa; one sister, Melinda Cody, Richmond, two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Gary Story officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Sherrill Browning, Jimmy Glenmore Adkins, Jimmy McDaniel, Barry Hume, Roger Alan Patton, John Woods, Billie Dean Whittaker, Barry and Teddy Teater. VERNA SHACKELFORD
Verna Mae Shackelford, 86, of 119 Royalty Heights, Salvisa, widow of Elmer Shackleford, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 in Oxford, OH. Born Feb. 15, 1911, in Nicholasville, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Ollie Haynes Thomas. She was a former cafeteria supervisor for the Mercer County School system and was a member of the Salvisa Baptist Church. Survivors include: one son, Lonnie Shackelford, Oxford, OH; one daughter, Ann Presley, Burgin; two brothers, Everett and James Thomas, both of Lexington; one sister, Marie Eaves, Lexington; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Salvisa Baptist Church with the Rev. James Hensley officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Doug Brown, James Brown, Robert Brown, David Brown, Steve Cosby, Jonathan Kayes, John Mark Johnson and John White. Honorary pallbearers were Aubrey Morris, George O. JOHN WATSON
John E. Watson, 71, of 432 N. College Street, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born July 21, 1926 in Jewett City, Conn., he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Watson. He was retired from the U. S. Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel, having served in WW II, Korea and Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Navy Cross, Purple Heart, Presidential Citation, Bronze Star, among others. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Darlene) Peach, Harrodsburg; three grandchildren, John Michael Peach, Lauran Peach and Eathan Peach, all of Harrodsburg. Services for Mr. Watson were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Ransdell Funeral chapel with the Rev. Lewis Smith officiating. Burial was in Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville. Pallbearers were the Marine Corps Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Association.

Kenneth Evans Stewart, 85, of Marion, IL, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997 at Veterans Hospital in Marion. Born Jan. 18, 1912 in Holiday, MO, he was the son of the late Sterling and Lenah Evans Stewart. He was a retired head instructor of NIT in Toledo, OH and a former substitute electronics teacher at Harrodsburg Vocational School. Survivors include: two sons, Kenneth D. Stewart of Carbondale, IL and Evans Steven Stewart, Harrodsburg; three daughters, Beverly Harris, Terry Henninger and Robin Stewart, all of Harrodsburg; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in Holiday, MO where there was a small military ceremony on Dec. 26.

LUCILLE MOBLEY
Lucille Springate Mobley, 82, Tampa, FL, formerly of Lexington, widow of R. C. Mobley, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 in the Palm Garden of Tampa. Born in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Garfield and Bertha Trower Springate. She was a former sales lady in the children's department of Dawahares in the Fayette Mall. She was a member of Arlington Christian Church. Survivors include: one daughter, Shirley Miller, and son-in-law Dave Miller, of Tampa; one son, Steve (Butch) Mobley, and daughter-in-law Susan Mobley, Lexington; one sister, Mrs. Maurice (Ruby) Dean of Mercer County; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Con Springate. Funeral services were held Dec. 23 at W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland, conducted by the Rev. Michael Armstrong and the Rev. John Hockersmith with burial in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens in Jessamine County. Pallbearers were John Moore, Jackie Springate, Stanley Hicks, James Sorrell, James Eubank, and Kenny Dean. Honorary bearers were the Martha Darnell Bible Class at Arlington Christian Church.

COLEMAN MILLER
Two Residents Found Dead
Two Mercer County residents died in their homes in separate incidents during the last few days of 1997. On Sunday, Dec. 28, Hunter L. "Trey" Coleman, III, was found dead in his home at 160 Hopewell Road. The 17-year-old son of Hunter Coleman and Brenda Jones Coleman, both of Harrodsburg, was pronounced dead by Mercer County Coroner, Larry Sanders, and was taken to Frankfort for autopsy. According to Sanders, preliminary autopsy results indicated that the cause of Coleman's death was "positional asphyxiation," but further results on toxicology reports and the like are still pending. The final results are expected in about 10-14 days, said Sanders. On Tuesday morning, Jody Miller of Harrodsburg was found dead at his home. Details on cause of death were unavailable at press time, but Sanders stated that Miller had also been taken to Frankfort to undergo an autopsy.

HUNTER COLEMAN III
Hunter L. "Trey" Coleman III, 17, of 160 Hopewell Road, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997 at his residence. Born Nov. 15, 1980 in Danville, he was the son of Hunter L. Coleman of Harrodsburg and Brenda Jones Coleman, also of Harrodsburg. He was a farmer and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors, beside his parents, include: paternal grandmother, Mrs. Bonnie Coleman Blankenship, Harrodsburg; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Della Jones, Cornishville; two sisters, Springe Coleman Bugg, Harrodsburg and Lee Hunter Coleman, Mercer County. Funeral services Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. at Alexander and Royalty Funeral home with the Rev. Jack Geurin and Jackie Griffey officiating. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers: Pete Jones, David Jones, Patrick Jones, Derrick Jones, Brent Stewart, Wes Bradshaw, David Mobley and Jay Mobley. Expressions of sympathy are suggested to the Mercer County Little League, Harrodsburg, or the Mercer County DAWGS, c/o Mercer County High School, 937 Moberly Road, Harrodsburg. Visitation was from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and after 7 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

Jody Lee Miller, 36, of 211 Hycliff Street, died Tuesday, December 30, 1997 at his residence. Born December 6, 1961 in DeKalb, IL, he was the son of David C. and Carol Sue Tingle Miller. He was a press operator at DANA Corporation, a member of Pioneer Baptist Church and attended the Harrodsburg Community Church. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include: his wife, Denise Lynette Evans Miller; two daughters, Emily Kaye and Beth Renae Miller; two brothers, Randy Miller, Donnie Miller; and two sisters, Lori Demaree and Carla Miller, all of Harrodsburg. Services for Mr. Miller were held Friday, January 2, at 3:00 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bro. Terry Morrison and the Rev. Lewis Walter officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Myrtie D. Yeast Sanders, 90, of 1201 Lyndon Lane, Louisville, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997 at her residence. Born July 15, 1907 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Martha Mattie Patterson Yeast. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Middletown. Survivors include: one son, W. Lee Sanders, Prospect; one daughter, Mrs. Homer C. Freeman, Jr.; one brother, Frank Yeast; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel, 4400 Bardstown Rd., Louisville with Danny Haynes officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Park. Anne Carter Mitchell, 99, of Elmwood Apts., Chestnut Street, died Thursday, January 1, 1998 at Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born November 5, 1898 in Estill County, she was the daughter of the late Ruford and Callie Gray Carter. She was the widow of Benjamine H. Scott and Sam Mitchell. She was a retired LPN and the owner or Elmhurst Nursing Home. She was a former member of Town and Country Homemakers, the Kentucky Nurses Association, and the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. Survivors include: one daughter, Vivian McMurry; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eudora Dygert. Services for Mrs. Mitchell were held Saturday, January 3, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert DeFoor and Dr. David Hartman officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. Gordon T. McMurry, Gene MeMurry, Barry McMurry, Jim McMurry, Mike Dygert and Fred Purvis. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Elizabeth Oakley Horn, 86, 1774 Harrodsburg Road, Lawrenceburg, widow of Andrew B. Horn, died Wednesday, December 31, 1997 at her residence. She was a native of London, and daughter of the late William E. L. and Kathryn Graybeal Oakley. She was a retired employee of the Kentucky Department of Transportation after 20 years of service, a member of the First Christian Church of Lawrenceburg, and a 1928 graduate of London High School. Survivors include: one son, Benton Horn, Jeffersonville, IN; two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Tyree) Gaines and Elizabeth Jane Horn, Lawrenceburg; one brother, Arthur Oakley, Chicago, IL; one sister, Lottie Dees, Indianapolis, IN; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 3, at the Gash Memorial Chapel with Father Charles McDonald, Bro. Mike Hamrick and the family officiating. Burial was in Lawrenceburg Cemetery. Pallbearers were Judge Gary Payne, Kevin O'Mara, Steve Shelton, Keith Phillips, Wayne Hanks and Dan Yeast. Mary Devine Markowitz, 70, died December 13, 1997 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Sexton, in Cincinnati, OH. She was retired and was a member of the Gulfport Christian Church in Florida. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Devine of Harrodsburg. Survivors include: her husband, Robert Markowitz; two granddaughters, Lauri and Angie Sexton, Cincinnati; one brother, Harold Devine, FL; one aunt, Mrs. Bea Phillips of Harrodsburg. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and J. T. Devine. Services and burial were at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Cincinnati, December 18, 1997 with the Rev. Donald Steffy officiating.

Rudolph Martin Scott, 74, of Mackville, died Saturday, January 3, 1998 at the Columbia Spring View Hospital in Lebanon. A native of Washington County, he was born on November 17, 1923 to the late Chester and Minnie Darland Scott. He was a retired farmer, a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church of Mackville and a member of the VFW, Washington County Post #6951. Survivors include: his wife, Loveda Shewmaker Scott, to whom he was married July 13, 1946 in Perryville; two sons, Larry Joe Scott of Springfield, Gary Scott, Mackville; two grandchildren and one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Wilson (Jewell) Pinkston of Mackville; two brothers, C. B. Scott, Burgin and Winston Scott, Middletown. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 5, at the Carey and Son Funeral Home, Springfield, with the Rev. Chuck Robinson and the Rev. Randy Hawkins officiating. Burial was in Peter Cemetery, Mackville. Pallbearers were Marty Hatchett, Carlton Shewmaker, Jim Powell, Greg Shewmaker, Paul Hays Scott and Charles Scott Pinkston. Gertrude Buck, 69, of Harrodsburg died Sunday, January 4, 1998 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 27, 1928 in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ida Mae Lynn Rogers. She was the widow of James "Jim" Buck. She was a member of Dry Branch Baptist Church and she was a housewife. Survivors include: four sons, Eddie, Holland, Jackie and Timmy Buck, all of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Vera Colvin and Brenda Bosewell, both of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Retha Baker of Lawrenceburg, IN, and Maudie Johnson of Aurora, IN, and 16 great-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Estill, Irea, Gib and Locia Rogers, and two sisters, Bertha Woodrum and Allie Johnson. Services for Mrs. Buck were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, at Bartle Funeral Home in Liberty. The Rev. Donnie Releford officiated and burial was in Whited Cemetery. Pallberarers were grandsons.

Born January 7, 1923, in Boyle County, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha Devine Yates. She was a homemaker and member of Southland Christian Church where she was a former member of the Ladies Circle. Survivors include: her husband, Archie Martin, Burgin; a daughter, Collette Martin Schaffer of Jackson, TN; a half-sister, Jean Franklin of Lancaster; a half-brother, Lewis Yates of Danville; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Charlene Martin Hensley; two sisters, one half sister, and seven brothers. Services were held Monday, January 5, at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with the Rev. Garrett Stephens officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Danny Yates, Freddie Yates, Larry Yates, Gordon P. Yates, Cecil Carey and Archie Yates. Honorary bearers were Bill Carey, Homer Yates, Jr., James H. He was born September 1, 1921 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky and was the son of the late Byron and Laura Houchins Peavler. He was a retired brick mason, an Air Force Veteran of W.W.II, and a member of the Harrodsburg Church of Christ. Survivors include: his wife, Ruth Houk Peavler, Burgin; one son Byron Brent Peavler, Harrodsburg; one daughter Pamela Peavler Tatum, Harrodsburg; two brothers; James Morris Peavler, Burgin and Hugh Leonard Peavler, Lexington; two sisters; Eva Fisher, Lexington and Mary Ann Merriman, Danville; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren Funeral Services were conducted Tuesday, January 6, at the McClellan Funeral Home by Rob Harbison. Kathleen Lunsford Phillips Demaree, 85, formerly of East Factory Street, died Friday, January 2, 1998 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Hilton J. Demaree. Born August 21, 1912, in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late William Mitchell and Millie Estes Lunsford. She was a former restaurant, laundromat and nursing home operator. She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion. Survivors include: one stepson, James Demaree of Harrodsburg; one stepdaughter, Sharon Clark of Paint Lick; and four step grandchildren. Services were held Monday, January 5, at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lewis Walter and Rev. Larry Harris officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Nettie Blue, 60, of 754 Pea Ridge Rd., Stamping Ground, wife of John Blue, died Tuesday, January 6, 1998, at her residence. Born July 30, 1937 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late John and Ethel Riley Sanders. She was a homemaker. In addition to her husband, survivors include: two brothers, T.C. Sanders of Boyle County and Granville Maurice Peyton Sr. of Lexington, and two sisters, Vera Frances Gaines of Lexington and Ruby Watts of Frankfort. Funeral services for Mrs. Blue will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Kirkwood Cemetery in Salvisa with Bro. Bryon Denny officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark Watts, Wesley Gaines, Harold Anderson, Paul Dials, Kenneth Ruthledge and James Peyton. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 7 a.m. Friday at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

Ermine Sallee Smith, 97, of 428 W. Office St., died Tuesday, January 6, 1998 at Harrodsburg Health Care Center. Born February 9, 1900 in Shannon County, MO, she was the daughter of the late William Harrison Sallee and Lidosha Devine and the widow of George Risdon Smith. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church and the L.L.L. Sunday School Class. Survivors include: a daughter, Jennie Annelle Foster of Harrisburg, PA; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and a niece, Carolyn Devine of Harrodsburg. Services for Mrs. Smith will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Dr. Robert DeFoor will officiate and burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, prior to services. Pallbearers will be the the Glad Hands Sunday School Class. Expressions of sympathy can take the form of donations to the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation.

Laurence Barrett, 88, of Twinsburg, OH, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. He was the husband of the late Betty Teter and Ruth Long; father of Judson (Glenda) of Raleigh, NC; the Rev. Geoffrey (Shelia) of Prestonburg, Todd of Twinsburg, OH, and the late Charles Barrett; grandfather of 11; and great-grandfather of 13. He was preceded in death by five sisters. Mr. Barrett served in the U.S. Navy. Services were held December 23, 1997 at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Romito, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, Twinsburg, OH. Burial followed at Locust Grove Cemetary.
