MELVIN GULLETT
Melvin Paul Gullett, 59, of Riverside Drive, died Wednesday, January 27, 1999, at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born May 23, 1939, in Magoffin County, he was a son of the late Robert S. and Mary Belle Reed Gullett.
He was a former heavy equipment operator for Woodall Construction Co., and a member of Pioneer Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Pike Gullett, Harrodsburg; a son, Jeff Gullett of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Debbie Newton and Angie Moore, both of Harrodsburg; six brothers, Troy Francis, Buel Jay, Bobby, Jerry, Donnie and Berlin Gullett, all of Harrodsburg; one sister, Susan Francis; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, January 29, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Rev. Bobby Logue. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

MYRTLE McDONALD
Myrtle McDonald, 74, of 3165 Talmage-Mayo Road, died Thursday, January 28, 1999, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
Born Sept. 13, 1924, in Erwin, NC, she was a daughter of the late Jesse J. and Carrie Massengill Lucas.
She was a homemaker, the widow of Daniel McDonald Jr. and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Daniel Lee "Danny" McDonald, Salvisa; three daughters, Phyllis Hodges of Fayetteville NC, Joyce Hinson of Wilmington, NC, and Linda Crisp of Salvisa; a stepmother, Myrtle Lucas of Dunn, NC; four sisters, Hilda Cooper and Tennie Johnson, both of Dunn, NC, Barbara Lynch of Virginia Beach, VA, and Joyce Howell of Florida; one brother, Jesse Lucas Jr. of Erwin, NC; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 30, at Bethel Baptist Church by Rev. Jack Geurin. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Donald Crisp, Walter Hinson, Lee Ezell, Mitchell Hodges, Darrin Sims, Keith McDonald, Kevin and Waylon Hinson.

NORMAN SIERS
Norman Thomas Siers, 62, of 1485 Birdie Road in Anderson County, died Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
Born in Anderson County, he was the son of Nellie Williams Siers of Lawrenceburg and the late John Willie Siers.
He was a 1955 graduate of Anderson High School, a U. S. Army veteran, a former employee of Kraft Foods and Anderson Packaging, and a member of the Corinth Christian Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include several cousins; Connie and Jerry Carlton, Lawrenceburg, Sherman Siers of Harrodsburg, Allen Williams of Louisville and Faye Harting and Amy Holiday, both of Indiana.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 30, at the Ritchie-Peach-Todd Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Waggoner and Bro. Matt Sawyer officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Stewart Brown, Gene Perry, Don Cooper, Clarence Perkins, Cole Carlton and Chad Carlton. Honorary bearers were Bert Buntain, Steve Butts, Bruce Willard, Butch Perry, Jeff Young, Roger and Curt Carlton.

MARK WARREN
Mark Warren, 60, an award-winning television director and a native of Harrodsburg, died Jan. 11 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.
In 1971, Warren became the first black director to win an Emmy, for directing ``Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In.''
Warren spent six years in the Air Force and moonlighted as a jazz disc jockey for a radio station in Ottawa then sold an idea for a musical TV series and acted as its production manager. He also performed on a children's show before becoming producer and director in charge of variety programming for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.Later, he directed several other television shows including, ``The Diahann Carroll Show,'' ``The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour,'' episodes of ``Barney Miller,'' ``Sanford and Sons,'' and ``The Dukes of Hazzard.'' He also directed several films.
He was an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California School of Cinema and Television and a special projects instructor for the Directors Guild of America.
Survivors include his wife, Beryl Warren; his mother, Mary Warren of Frankfort; three sons, Andre, Christian and Brian, all of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

GEORGE RUSSELL
George Henry Russell, 73, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Mackville, died Thursday, January 28, 1999 at the VA Medical Center in Lexington.
A native of Washington County, he was born on August 25, 1925, son of the late Prentice Lee and Ora Bee Powell Russell.
He was a member of the Mackville Christian Church, an army veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW Post #6935, Harrodsburg.
Survivors include: one son, William Lee "Pete" Russell, LaPorte, IN; two daughters, Mrs. Hank (Nancy) Hamende, Mackville and Donna Russell, Carmel, IN; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Nannie Lou) Bottom, Mackville, Lena Mae Hill, New Carlisle, IN; one step sister, Mrs. Leroy (Clara Bell) Pyles, Albany; five grandsons; two step granddaughters, seven great grandchildren; one step great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Grubbs Russell on July 10, 1997; three brothers, Ed Russell, Johnnie C. Russell and William A. Russell; and two step brothers, Morrison Russell and Burtice Russell.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 30 , at the Carey and Son Funeral Home with Bro. Ken Ward officiating. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery at Mackville where full military rites were conducted by the Marion County Honor Guard.

Clarence Vernon Tatum, 84, of 116 Brook St., Burgin, died Monday, February 1, 1999 at his residence.
Born December 31, 1914 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Ira Porter and Mattie Pearl Lester Tatum.
He was a self employed farmer and a member of the Burgin Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Sadie Lee Sallee Tatum, Burgin; four sons, Robert Elwood "Bob" Tatum, Roy Allen Tatum, Donald Ray Tatum and Vernon Lee Tatum, all of Mercer County; five daughters, Kathleen "Kathy" Fain, Wilmore, Betty J. Tatum, Lexington, Martha Ann "Mossie" Johnson, Trenton, FL, Dorothy Lynn "Dot" Bottom, Burgin, and Brenda Carroll Thornton, Harrodsburg; one brother, Elmer C. "Pete" Tatum, Danville; one sister, Ethel Watkins, Harrodsburg, 23 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Airlene Baker and Hallie Hayslett, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 4, at the Ransdell Funeral chapel with Rev. Joseph Vest and Rev. James Harley officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Lillie Mae Hardin Key Webb, 87, died Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at Harrodsburg Health Care.
Born July 8, 1911, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Nelson and Lucy West Hardin.
She was a homemaker and the widow of Irvin Webb.
Survivors include: one sister, Sarah Gibson, Perryville; two step sons, Tony Church, Burgin and Johnnie Webb, High Bridge; a nephew, James Bottom, Danville; two nieces, Nancy Baker and Lou Butler, both of Harrodsburg. She was preceded in death by a husband, Johnnie Key.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 5, at the Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville, with Rev. Earl Burnside officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Earl Coyle, William Graves, Donald Carpenter, George Otis Russell, Richard Smith and Frank Russell.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, February 4, at the funeral home.

ROBERT MAYES
Robert Jason Mayes, 92, of Perryville, died Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
Born November 26, 1906, in Washington County, he was the son of the late William Irvin and Evalene Bottom Mayes.
He was a farmer and retired car salesman, having worked at R. C. Bottom Motors and Long Bros., and Porter Chevrolet.
Survivors include: one son, Randy Mayes, Parksville; two daughters, Evalene Rogers, Florence, and Louella Wright, Louisville; one sister, Kathryn Graham, Mackville; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Mayes, and a sister, Ruby Walls.
Funeral services will be Thursday, February 4, at Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville with Rev. Wayne Malone officiating. Burial will be in Battle Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randy Mayes, Jr., Isaiah Mayes, Freddie Wright, Timothy Rogers, Brad Noel and Peck Reynolds.
Visitation 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., on Wednesday at the funeral home.

JAMES DICKERSON
James R. Dickerson, 88, of 1407 Tims Drive, Mt. Sterling, died Friday, February 5, 1999 at Windsor Care Center in Mt. Sterling.
Born December 1, 1910 in Boyle county, he was the son of the late Tom and Lillie White Dickerson. He was the widower of Hazel Preston Dickerson.
He was a retired self employed merchant and a member of the Undenominational Church.
He owned and operated Dickerson's Store in Salvisa for nearly 56 years.
Survivors include: his wife, Faith Ella Witt Todd Dickerson, Mt. Sterling; two step daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Linda) Ford, Somerset, and Mrs. Jim (Donna) NeSmith, Mt. Sterling; one sister, Helen Taylor, Perryville; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Gene (Barbara) Click; two sisters, Lula Taylor and Mattieleen Clark.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 8, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Jerome Frandel and Greg Harger officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

ANNIE POPE
Annie Joy Pope, 21, of Lexington, died Friday, February 5, 1999 in Mercer County.
Born in Indianapolis, IN, she was a daughter of Jeffrey Wayne and Mary Catherine Newby Pope of Lexington.
She was a student at the University of Kentucky and a member of the Bible Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.
Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Jeffrey Wayne Pope Jr.; two sisters, Stephanie Marie Pope and Jamie LeAnne Pope, maternal grandmother, Phyllis Hall, paternal grandparents, John and Ethel Baugh, all of Lexington.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 10, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington, by Rev. Sidney Bates. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Lexington.

LT. COL. R. F. MOORE
Lt. Col. R. F. Moore, 81, a native of Mercer County, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Threlkeld, died January 31, 1999 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Her served in WW II and made the army his career.
He is survived by two sons, Bill Schwing, Dillsboro, IN and Bobby Schwing, of Hebron. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Pentz, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Mrs. Jane Richmond, Richmond, and one brother, Rev. Gayle Threlkeld, Nashville, TN; two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Milly.
Funeral services and burial were February 3, 1999 in Ft. Lauderdale.

PEARL GRAVELY
Pearl Hicks Gravely, 95, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born October 29, 1903 in Brodhead, she was the daughter of the late Robert Hemphill and Lela Pike Hicks. She was the widow of Gervis Gravely.
She graduated from Brodhead High School and attended Eastern Kentucky State College in Richmond and George Washington University in Washington, DC.
She was a charter member of the Lexington Avenue Baptist Church in Danville and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Frankfort, the Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, DC and the First Baptist Church in Burlington, NC.
When she retired in 1970 she was the executive officer of the Payroll Division of the Civil Service Commission in Washington, DC. She also served as a liaison between the Commission and the White House during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. She served as the Worthy Matron of the Warren G. Harding Chapter of the Eastern Star in Washington and was an officer of the Kentucky Club and member of the New York Club in Washington.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, William W. and Mary Mitchell Wooldridge Gravely, Harrodsburg; two sisters, Ann Marie Hicks Cartyvelles, Louisville, Frances Louise Hicks Meadows, Louisville; one brother, George Pike Hicks, Louisville; three grandchildren, William W. Gravely Jr., Glasgow, Thomas W. Gravely, Edgewood and Mary Mitchell (Sissy) Gravely Reinhardt, Lexington; seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, February 12, at the McClellan Funeral Home with Rev. Carroll Wallace and Rev. Les Rust officiating. Burial was in the Piney Grove Cemetery at Brodhead.
Pallbearers were William Gravely Jr., Tom Gravely, Craig Reinhardt, George Hicks, Joe Melton, Jim Hisle, and John Rupley.

Margaret Elizabeth Hellard Mann, 72, of Lexington, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999.
She was born in Mercer County, the daughter of the late Renious and Anna Adkinson Hellard, but had lived most of her life in Lexington.
Survivors include: her husband of 52 years, Marion Mann, Lexington; three daughters, Barbara (Charles) Sharp, Versailles, Cathy Dicks Harper, Lexington, Vickie (George) Hulbert, Bay Minette, AL; three sisters, Betty Warfield and Mary Jo Hilen, both of Winchester, and Marie Hicks, Lexington; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 13, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington, with Harvey Bream and Pat More officiating. Burial was in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens on Harrodsburg Road.

MARGARET CULL
Margaret Frances Crume Cull, 85, widow of Horace T. Cull, formerly of 453 Linden Avenue, died Friday, February 12, 1999, at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
Born December 3, 1913 in Fredricktown, Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Dr. William Ernest and Effie Kimberlain Crume.
She grew up in Bardstown, graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, VA and Peabody College in Nashville, TN and had taught in the Burgin Independent School.
Survivors include: her son, William Cull, Frankfort; one sister, Mrs. Lee Grigsby, Bardstown; one granddaughter, Emmaline, Frankfort, and one great grandson, Isaiah. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Cull.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 15, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Girard officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Carlos W. Wilson Sr., 80, of 2014 Talmage-Mayo Road, died Sunday, February 14, 1999 at the VA Hospital, Cooper Drive, Lexington.
Born April 23, 1918 in Leitchfield, he was the son of the late George Brown and Stella Glasscock Wilson.
He was retired from Transit Authority River City in Louisville, a charter member of Shivley Heights Baptist Church and the Sunset Masonic Lodge, Louisville and the VFW.
He was an army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include: his wife, Melba Elizabeth "Pullen" Wilson, Harrodsburg; two sons, Lawrence (Cynthia) Wilson, Lexington, and C. W. (Linda) Wilson, Jr., Harrodsburg; one brother, George Brown Wilson, Woodridge, VA; three sisters, Hazel Austin and Lorene Stone, both of Louisville, and Emma White, Leitchfield; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Raymond Brock, 81, of 629 Garriott Lane, formerly of Pulaski County, died Sunday, February 14, 1999 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born May 2, 1917 in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late Ezra and Gertie Barker Brock.
He was a member of the Salvisa Baptist church and a farmer.
Survivors include: his wife, Clarice Prather Brock, Harrodsburg; two sons, Darrell Brock and Russell Brock, both of Harrodsburg, three daughters, Mrs. Bobby (Janie) Lacefield, Lawrenceburg, Mrs. R. C. (Carolyn) Henson and Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Tyler, both of Mercer County; 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 17 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. James Hensley and Bro. John David Lane officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Hazel Kurtz Sims, 90, of 851 South College Street, widow of Clinton Sims, Sr., died Sunday February 14, 1999 at her residence.
Born March 17, 1908 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Roland and Nora Ethel Voories Kurtz.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include: three sons, H. J. (Rosanne) Sims, Mercer County, Thomas Clinton (Shirley) Sims, Jr., Frankfort, and Clarence William (Louise) Sims, Hamilton, OH; one daughter, Margaret L. (Vernon) Camden, Mercer County; two; sisters, Ruth K. Davis, Mercer County and Mary L. Carter, Harrodsburg; two brothers, Harvey Jeff Kurtz and Clarence A. Kurtz, both of Mercer County; 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Jessie K. Sims, Margaret F. Tumey, and Naomi Ray Kurtz, and one brother, Alvin Kurtz.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 17, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Barry Jeffries officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

William Owen "Buck" Whalen, 85, of 133 Gritton Lane, died Monday, February 15, 1999 at his residence.
Born June 7, 1913 in Valley View, he was the son of the late Rome and Lucy Davis Whalen.
He was a retired equipment salesman, a lifetime honorary Fire Chief of Terrapin & Dugansville Fire Department, was founder of John Deere Industrial Equipment in Lexington, was a member of the Three C's, the T. N. Wise Masonic Lodge 349 F&AM, and a member and deacon of Hebron Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Ailene Bussell Whalen, Harrodsburg; one son, William (Amanda) Whalen, Jr., Salvisa; three daughters, Bobbie Jean (Jack) Lindsey, Salvisa, Doris (R. D.) Knox, Harrodsburg, and Brenda Jo (David) Evans, of Salvisa. Two sisters, Virgie Lee Ratcliffe and Mary Lucy Martin, both of Lexington; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Connie, Forest, and Edgar Whalen.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 18, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. George Dye officiating. Masonic rites were held Wednesday eveving. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Bessie Nugent, 70, of Hawesville, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
She was born in Hancock County and was a member of Blackford Baptist Church.
Survivors include: four sons, Danny Payne and Gene Nugent of Owensboro, David Alexander and Mark Nugent of Hawesville; three daughters, Nancy Claycomb, Salvisa, Rosemary Carter and Karen Sullivan, both of Hawesville; 14 grandchildren, 11 step grandchildren, five great grandchildren, eight step great grandchildren; one brother, Charles Snyder, Hawesville; two sisters, Clara Dunn, Louisville and Ann Ramsey, Hawesville.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 19, at Gibson and Son Funeral Home. Burial was in Blackford Baptist Church Cemetery near Hawesville.

WILLIAM TAYLOR Jr.
William Thomas Taylor, Jr., age 31, of 203 East Poplar Street, died Thursday, February 18, 1999 at his residence.
Born March 28, 1967 in Mercer County, he was the son of William Thomas Taylor, Sr., of Lexington, and Brenda Weldon Brandt of Lawrenceburg.
He was a former Burger King employee and had attended Ellers Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include: his wife, Beverly Day Taylor, Harrodsburg; two sons, Daniel Thomas Taylor and Eric Thomas Taylor, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Ashley Nicole Taylor, Harrodsburg; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Christine Taylor, Frankfort; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Wanda Weldon, Harrodsburg; one brother, Travis Scott Taylor, Burgin; two half brothers, William Terry Taylor and James Michael Taylor, both of Harrodsburg; three sisters, Lisa Enlow, Danville, Lori Logue, Burgin and Christi Brown, Harrodsburg; one half sister, Angela Taylor.
Funeral services were Sunday, February 21, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Cornish officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were William Baker, Wayne Day, David Day, Eugene Baker, Shannon Newman and Brian Day.
