Mrs. Virginia Watts Matherly Gillespie, 91, of 657 Fairview Ct., died Monday, July 19, 1999 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 16, 1907 in Deep Creek, she was the daughter of the late Marion Douglas and Mary Zerlida Watts Matherly. She had been an employee of Stopher s Dry Cleaners and Trayner s Grocery Store. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church for more than 50 years. Survivors include: a granddaughter, Ginger Claunch Bussell of Harrodsburg; four great-grandsons, Sean Claunch, Beau Claunch, Lucas Claunch and Ethan Claunch, and twin grandsons, Douglas Stallard and James Clay Trisler. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Robert DeFoor and Bro. Delbert Hammonds officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jackie Claunch, Scott Johnson, Garnett Matherly, David Taylor, Bob Baker and Franklin Ransdell. Honorary pallbearers were great-grandsons Sean Claunch, Beau Claunch, Lucas Claunch and Ethan Claunch.

JOHN DICKERSON
Mr. John Dickerson, 71, of 737 Central Pike died Sunday, July 18, 1999 at his residence. Born July 8, 1928 in Cobb Hill, he was the son of the late James and Sarah Watson Dickerson. He was the widower of Verde Priddy Dickerson. He was a farmer and had served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. Survivors include: three sons, Carl Lloyd Dickerson of Georgetown, Johnny Darryl Dickerson of Harrodsburg and Charles Adrian Dickerson of Paris; four daughters, Debra Jo Salters, Devonda Sue Hutson, Mary Lou Walton and Anna Claralene Mann, all of Hopkinsville; a brother, Preston Dickerson of Lexington; a sister, Mrs. Louranna Hall of Harrodsburg; 22 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Wayne Dickerson; a daughter, Dianna Lynn Dickerson and a sister, Kathleen Thompson. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Bro. John Watts will officiate. Burial will be in the Cobb Hill Cemetery in Estill County with military rites performed by the Marine Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Carl Dickerson, Johnny Dickerson, Adrian Dickerson, Jeff Walton, Willis Hicks and Howard Staley. Mr. Curtis "Shootie" Patterson, 69, of 770 Claunch Rd., Perryville, died Saturday, July 17, 1999. Born March 16, 1930 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Armpey and Bertie Devine Patterson. He was retired from E.W. Brown Generating Plant and was a member of the Benton Baptist Church. Survivors include: two sons, James Daryl Patterson of Perryville and Wayne Patterson of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Lucretia Ann Patterson of Lexington and Vicki Warner of Lawrenceburg; four sisters, Mrs. Garnett (Rena) Mobley, Mrs. Ernest (Nancy) Long, Mrs. Garnett (Christine) Hart and Mrs. James (Opal) Claunch, all of Harrodsburg; 11 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Garrett Lee Patterson, and two brothers, Larue and Marvin Patterson. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Bro. Chuck Robinson officiated and burial was in Patterson Cemetery. Pallbearers were Marty Long, Darty Hart, Monte Hart, Chad Barnett, Tim Darland, Brad Barnett, Chris Holderman and Mark Bugg. ELWOOD LONG
Mr. Elwood Long, 84, of 876 Lexington Rd., died Friday, July 16 at the Veteran s Administration Hospital on Cooper Drive in Lexington. Born Jan. 28, 1915 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Ed and Addie Royalty Long. He had been an automobile dealer for more than 42 years. He was a member of the Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, the 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite and the Oleika Temple Shriners for over 50 years. He was a member of the Mercer Lodge F& A-M and had served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Long was a member and deacon of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Margaret Cheatham Long; two sons, Don Long and Eddie Long, both of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Vernice Jewell Long and Ernest Long, both of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Kathleen Newby of Harrodsburg and Virginia Saladino of Ft. Worth, TX; five granddaughters, and three great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Long and Bertha Hazel Long, and a brother Thurman Long. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Dr. Robert DeFoor and Dr. Kenneth Whitehouse officiated. Masonic rites were held at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 17. Burial with military rites was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Long, Jerry Newby, Rickey Long, Charles E. Cheatham, Charles F. Cheatham, Doug Cheatham. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Devine, Kenneth Kirkland, Edwin Freeman, Charles Hurst and Bill Pinkston.

HENRY C. LUCAS
Mr. Henry C. Lucas, 85, of Trumansburg, NY died Wednesday, July 14, 1999 at the Cayuga Medical Center. Born in Highbridge on Dec. 19, 1913, he was the son of the late John and Laura Benson. A resident of Trumansburg for the past 38 years, he was an avid gardener. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. Survivors include: his wife, Elise Lucas; two children, Paul Lucas of Murfreesboro, TN, and a daughter, Barbara Liles of Temple, TX; two step-children, David Godbey of Mecklenburg, NY, and Diane Sneed of Austin, TX, and two sisters, Martha Belcher of Murfreesboro and Mary (Bill) Alford of Ithaca, NY. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Donna Stutz in 1998. Funeral services for Mr. Lucas were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 19 at the Covert Funeral Homes in Trumansburg. The Rev. Peter Hood officiated. Burial was in Grove Cemetery, also in Trumansburg.

MARY HOLLADAY
Mrs. Mary Louise Davenport Holladay, 77, wife of C. Thomas "Tom" Holladay, formerly of Lexington and Atlanta, GA, died Saturday, July 17, 1999 at her son s home in Nicholasville. Born Oct. 1, 1921 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Nelson and Hattie Allen Buchanan Davenport. She was a graduate of Harrodsburg High School and was a former member of the Lexington Women s Club, and Central Kentucky Ladies Golf Association. She was a member of the Berkeley Hills Ladies Golf Association and numerous bridge clubs. She also was a member and elder of the Church of the New Covenant in Doraville, GA, and a former member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington. In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, Thomas N. "Tommy" Holladay of Nich-olasville and Gary D. Holladay of Bucks County, PA; two brothers and two sisters, George Davenport of Ft. Wright; Elizabeth Harris and Lillian Plummer, both of Harrodsburg, and Robert "Bob" Davenport of Danville, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the W.R. Milward Mortuary-Southland. The Rev. Steve Palmer and Chaplain Craig Ryan officiated and burial was in the Lexington Cemetery. Pallbearers were Troy Holladay, Rob Davenport, Steve Hider, Brent Hider, Larry Thompson and John Deye. Mrs. Sarah Marie Roberts, 80, of 719 E. 7th St., Jeffersonville, IN, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday, July 19, 1999 at her home. Born May 7, 1919 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Veston and Mary Margaret Bugg-Taylor and the widow of Robert Elwood Carrier and Clyde T. (J.B.) Roberts. Mrs. Roberts, who had lived in Jeffersonville since 1954, was a homemaker and a volunteer in her community. She was involved in the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program of South Central Indiana for 19 years. She was a volunteer for Lifespan Resource Center at Clark Arms Nutrition Center Site for 20 years, working four to five days each week. She was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include: a son, Robert Bruce Carrier; two daughters, Bonnie R. Baxter of Seymour, IN and JoLeen Walsh of Teaneck, NJ; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, Michael K. Griffith and Janet L. Griffith; nine great-grandchildren, and two step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21 at Scott Funeral Home and burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville. Mr. Arnold L. Burton, 81, of Wolf Pen Road in Pendleton, husband of Elsie Carey Burton, died Monday, July 19, 1999 at the Tri-County Baptist Hospital in La-Grange. Born Oct. 13, 1917 in Willow Grove, he was the son of the late Mack and Lula Eads Burton. He was a retired shop foreman for Smith Transfer Trucking Company, was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, was a former deacon at Delhi Baptist Church in Cincinnati, and was an avid fisherman. In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Kenneth Wayne Burton of Lexington and Ronald Lee Burton of Marietta, GA; a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Jacci) Bedenbaugh of Cincinnati, OH; a brother, Carol Burton of Northern Kentucky; a sister, Ruth Belcher of Parksville; four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Bro. Terry Morrison will officiate and burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Priscilla H. Cowan of 685 Ashley Camp Rd., died Saturday, July 17 at Harrodsburg Health Care Center. Born March 27, 1910 in Bellows Falls, VT, she was the daughter of the late Webster Warren and Bertha Day Hall. She was the widow of James Theodore Cowan. She was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Vermont Academy (1927). She was a Communicant of the Immanuel Episcopal Church and served as president of the Ladies Society. She served on the Rockingham Board of Civil Authority for 25 years and was a Justice of the Peace. She was corporator of the Rockingham Memorial Hospital and president to the hospital auxiliary. She was a former vice president of Bellows Falls Federated Women s Club and a volunteer for the Vermont Children s Aid and the American Red Cross. Survivors include: a son, Robert Cowan of Harrodsburg; a daughter, Carolyn Losee of Harbor City, CA; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at a later date with burial in the Immanuel Episcopal Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Mr. James Bennett Spilman, 84, of 349 N. Greenville St. died Thursday, July 15, 1999 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 17, 1914 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late James and Lucy Mahan Spilman. He was a retired newspaper carrier and a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church. Survivors include several cousins, including, Sara Virginia McGee of Harrodsburg. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17 at the McClellan Funeral Home. The Rev. Mark Girard officiated. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Joe Hill, Howard Nichols, Joe Blankenship, Ralph Clark, Frank Trisler and Marvin Ashford. Bobby Gene Vandivier, 64, of 375 Bacon Court, died Sunday, July 25, 1999 at his residence. Born August 4, 1934, he was the son of Beuna Katherine Kyler Vandivier, Harrodsburg, and the late Garnett E. Vandivier. He was a general contractor, an army veteran, a member of Masonic Lodge 777 F&AM, and the Mercer Builders Association. He was also a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church and a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Nora Jean Underwood Vandivier, Harrodsburg; one son, Darron (Ellie) Vandivier, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Kimberly) Herring, Lexington; three sisters, Barbara Deakle, Nicholasville, Sharon Myers, Lexington, and Linda Sue Vandivier, Corbin; two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Terry Cornish and James Harley officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. She was retired from Genesco after 33 years and was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church. Survivors include her nephew, William Thomas Moore of Gravel Switch and several cousins. Funeral Mass was held Saturday, July 24, at St. Andrew Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Muench officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Whitehead, Harrodsburg; two daughters, Mrs. David (Kay) Simpson, Earlington, and Mrs. Larry (Peggy) Short, Harrodsburg; one sister, Mrs. Leroy (Anna Mae) Dean; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 28, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Don Reed and Larry Redding officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Born February 19, 1914 in Cynthiana, she was the daughter of the late William W. and Anna Mai Shropshire VanDeren. She was the widow of Dr. Condit Brewer VanArsdall Jr. She was a graduate of Duke University and received her Masters Degree from Louisiana State University. She was a member of the Jane McAfee Chapter of the DAR, past president of the Harrodsburg Historical Society, member of the Harrodsburg Woman's Club and a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist church. Survivors include one son: William VanDeren VanArsdall, Frankfort, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Condit B. VanArsdall III, and one grandson, Condit B. VanArsdall IV. Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 26, at the Harrodsburg United Methodist church by Rev. Mark Girard. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. Jim Alexander, Dr. Nick Dedman, Tom VanArsdall, Wick Asbury, Tom Schweri, Patrick Hatchett, George Rogers Jr., and Lambert Moore. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church where he served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and an army veteran of World War II. Survivors include: his wife, Edwina Phillips Young; three sons, Eddie, Tony and Phillip Young, all of Harrodsburg; one brother, Jesse Young, Mercer County; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, James Thomas, Andy, Boscoe and Amos Young; and two sisters, Jeannie Lyons and Anna Lou Clark. Funeral Services were held Monday, July 26, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Hartman officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. A native of Washington County, he was born May 28, 1911 to the late Thomas and Matilda Devine Gabhart. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Mackville Church of Christ. Survivors include: his wife, Edith Bowles Gabhart. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Lillian Hale, Dora Shewmaker, Anna Bruce Settles and Bea Terflinger; two brothers, Roy Gabhart and George Gabhart. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 21, at the Mackville Church of Christ with Bro. Harry Coultas and Bro. Rick Murphy officiating. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery. Gray, Danville; one brother, Clarence Catlett, St. Petersburg, FL; one sister, Alma Catlett, Danville, four grandchildren, three step grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 28, at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville, with Rev. Don Benningfield and Rev. James Byrd officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery. For many years he was the manager of the Golf Car Division of TNT and later owned golf cars until he retired due to ill health. He enjoyed skeet shooting. He had served in the US Navy Reserves and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Marcia A. Wright, Quincy, IL; one son, J. Allen McCoy, Quincy; one daughter, Mrs. David (Jill M.) Morris, of Mayfield. He was preceded in death by one brother, Michael G. McCoy. Funeral services were held at the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home, Quincy, with Rev. Al Simonson officiating. Burial was in Greenmount Cemetery. She had worked as a secretary for Ashland Oil Company and as secretary and treasurer for the Overhead Door Company of Lexington. She was a member of the Paducah Church of Christ and was a University of Kentucky Fellow. Survivors include: her husband, Donald Harmon, Harrodsburg; one brother, David Harris, Houston, TX. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 31, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ken McKenny officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens, Pallbearers were Rodman Harmon, Kirtley Harmon, Joe Rankin, Milton Shryock, K. J. Woodruff and George A. Cannon. Honorary bearers were Johnny James, Earl Gaines and Harold Glass.
