Elizabeth Burchell Plante, 87, of 598 Lamont Drive, Lexington, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at the St. Joseph East Hospital in Lexington.
Born February 15, 1912 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Abe and Flora Elizabeth Frazier Burchell.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Broadway Baptist Church in Lexington.
Survivors include: her husband, Joseph Plante; one sister, Mrs. J. C. (Pearl) Stine, Lawrenceburg; one sister-in-law, Mrs. May Burchell, Burgin. She was preceded in death by one brother, David L. Burchell and two sisters, Katie Watts and Louise Warner.
Funeral services were held October 30, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Kenny Speakes officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens.

Mayola "Maggie" Meadows, 66, of 1341 W. Carson Street, #1, Torrance, CA, died Saturday, October 30, 1999 at her residence.
Born July 8, 1933 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Worley Cashus and Isa Mae Adkinson Lay.
She was a manager at the Torrance Palms Apartments and a member of Mt. Freedom Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, Paul Meadows, Torrance, CA; two sons, Monte Paul Meadows, Torrance, CA, Kenneth Bradley Meadows, London; one daughter, Linnie Christine Poz, Pigeon Forge, TN; two brothers, Christopher Hollis Lay, Maple Park, IL and Leo Daniel Lay, Willisburg; four sisters, Mrs. Wilma Mobley, Harrodsburg, Mrs. Amie Eunice Ross, Springfield, Mrs. Virginia Isham, Lawrenceburg, and Mrs. Mary Lee Coker, Cornishville; two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by a sister, Isabell Coulter and five brothers, Frank, Paul, Hobert, Dudley and Alva Lay.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Raymond Castillo officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Lula G. Hise, 89, of Sellersburg, IN, died Sunday October 31, 1999.
She was the widow of Hudson D. Hise.
She was a former cartographer for the United States Department of Commerce, and former president of the Floyd County Indiana Board of Education.
Survivors include: one daughter, Joan Burris, Underwood, IN; two sons, Paul Hise, Jeffersonville, IN and Dennis A. Hise, Harrodsburg; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 4, at the Gehlbach-Royse Funeral Home in Georgetown, IN.

CECIL VANDIVER
Cecil R. VanDiver, 80, of 324 Burgin-Danville Rd., died Wednes-day, October 27, 1999 at the VA Medical Center in Lexington.
Born August 5, 1919 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Oscar and Susie Cumingo VanDiver.
VanDiver was a US Army veteran, having served with the 192nd Tank Battalion at Bataan. The former prisoner of war was captured April 9, 1942, and forced by Japanese troops to walk about 70 miles with thousands of other U.S. soldiers (several of which were from Harrodsburg) in the infamous march in the Philippines. After the march, which left thousands dead, VanDiver lived in prison camps, doing such tasks as burying fallen fellow soldiers and mining coal. He was a prisoner until September 1945.
VanDiver was a life-time member of the Disabled American Veterans, was a mason with 777 F&AM, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was retired from the maintenance department at the Kentucky State Hospital. He was a member of the Indian Hills Christian Church in Danville and was a Kentucky Colonel.
Survivors include: his wife, Ruby Hawkins VanDiver, Burgin; two sons, Cecil Howard VanDiver, Carrollton, and Robert Eugene VanDiver, Burgin; one daughter, Betty Jean VanDiver, Burgin; one sister, Mary Della Yates, Indianapolis, IN; one grandson and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 30, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Odis Clark and Lee Cox officiating. Burial with full military rites was held in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tim Yates, David Baker, Roger Brown, Lee Qualls, Bill Johnson, and June Christy.

Ann Laura Allen Payne, 63, of 776 Stoner St., died Thursday, October 28, 1999 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born May 23, 1936 in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Smith Allen.
She was a housewife.
Survivors include: her husband, William B. Payne, Harrodsburg; three daughters, Annette Bartleson, Arnessa Young and Mary A. Young, all of Harrodsburg; three sons, Alfred Thomas and Daniel Lee Young, both of Harrodsburg and Leroy Young, Danville; one brother, Gary Allen, Indianapolis, IN; two sisters, Mary W. Shirley Ann Garland, 62, of W. Office St., died Monday November 1, 1999 in Lexington.
Born July 5, 1937 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Thelma Drury Sims. She was the widow of Richard Garland.
She was a former Hallmack employee and a member of the Grapevine Christian Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Vickie Keeling-Shelton, Lexington; one son, Rick Keeling, Versailles; one brother, James Sims, Harrodsburg; three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Maurice Sims, and one sister, Shelby Sims.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 4, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel, with Bro. Claude Waldridge officiating. Burial will be in Grapevine Cemetery.

Robert Elwood Tatum Sr., 59, of 110 Fountaine Terrace, died Sunday, November 7, 1999 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
Born March 5, 1940 in Mercer County, he was the son of Sadie Lee Sallee Tatum of Burgin and the late Clarence Vernon Tatum.
He was a self-employed plumber and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Judy Ann Jackson Tatum, Harrodsburg; one son, Robert E. Tatum, Jr., Harrodsburg; one daughter, Leisa Tatum Proctor, Pineville; three brothers, Roy, Donald and Vernon Tatum, all of Mercer County; five sisters, Kathleen Fain, Wilmore, Betty Tatum, Lexington, Martha Johnson, Trenton, FL; Dorothy Bottom Burgin, and Brenda Thorton, Harrodsburg; four grandchildren.

Willie A. Russell, 81, of Lincoln Park Road, Springfield, died Tuesday, November 2, 1999 at the Norton Spring view Hospital in Lebanon.
A native of Washington County, he was born on March 3, 1918 to the late Charlie and Kate Carpenter Russell.
He was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was a retired farmer.
Survivors include: two sons, Billy (Judy) Russell, and Mike (Katheleen) Russell, both of Springfield; two brothers, J. M. Russell, Perryville, Charles Russell Jr. Willisburg; four sisters, Mrs. Violet Faye Warner, Burgin, Mrs. Jess (Geneva) Warfield, Jackson, TN, Mrs. Dot Wallace, Louisville and Mrs. Irene Bledsoe, Paducah; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Russell and Wanda R. Lindsey; two brothers, G. W. Russell, and Marvin Russell.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 5, at the Springfield Baptist Church with Rev. Bland Mason officiating. He was assisted by Bro. Tim Hoyle. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery at Mackville.

Mary Margaret Ross Matherly, 86, of West High Street, Springfield, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 in the emergency room of Norton Spring View Hospital in Lebanon.
A native of Washington County, she was born on June 5, 1913 to the late William Thomas and Addie Lee Oldham Ross. She was the widow of Lanis Matherly.
She was a member of the Willisburg Church of Christ.
Survivors include: one daughter, Shirley Engle, Mt. Washington; three sons, Carl Matherly, Willisburg, Boyce Matherly, Springfield, and Ronnie Matherly of Mt. Washington; one brother, Loraine Ross, Harrodsburg; two sisters, Julia Higginbotham and Jean Ross, both of Harrodsburg; 19 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Truman and Tony Matherly; a granddaughter, Beverly Jo Engle; five brothers, Wilbur, Ansel, Stanley, William and Charlie B. Ross.

Howard G. Smith, 77, of 149 Danville Street, Burgin, died Thursday, November 11, 1999, at his residence.
Born May 27,1922 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Silas and Anna Young Carter Smith, Sr.
He was retired from Corning Glass and was a member of the Burgin Baptist Church, a trustee and taught the adult men's Sunday School class.
He was a 50 year member of the Bricklayers Local #17, and avid fisherman and gardener.
He was a US Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include: his wife of 53 years, Lola Dalton Smith; one son, David (Debbie) Smith, Burgin; two daughters, Sue (Lloyd) Dobbs, Moreland, and Sheila (Gary L.) Baxter, Kingsport, TN; three sisters, Alma Owens, Louisville, Mildred Avera, Junction City, Edna Miles, Sellersburg, IN; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, H. G. Smith, Jr., and one brother, Silas Smith, Jr.

Born April 22, 1927 in Lexington, he was the son of Walter and Bessie Goodrich Kelly.
He worked as a driver for the Mercer County Senior Citizens, was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and a deacon.

She was a graduate of Danville Bate High School, and attended First Baptist Church in Harrodsburg. She was a member of St. James AME Church in Danville, and was a cook for Beaumont Inn, having retired after 16 years.
Survivors include: her husband, Ansel Emmitt Smith, Sr., Cincinnati, OH; four sons, James and Michael Smith of Danville, Solomon and David Smith, Cincinnati; five daughters, Betty Boyd and Eliza Dismeaux, both of Cincinnati, OH; Barbara Hodge, Paducah, Margaret Howell, Clarkston, GA and Patricia Harlen, Frankfurt, Germany; a brother-in-law, Samuel Gooch, Danville; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Price Smith, and Mrs. Artie Pearl Brown, both of Harrodsburg; 30 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren. She was a former employee of Rand McNally in Versailles, a 1959 graduate of Mercer County High School and International Business college.
