Invalid Woman Dies In Fire At Berkshire Apartments
An invalid woman died last Thursday night, Sept. 11 after fire swept through her apartment at 148 Berkshire Apts., 830 N. College St.
Wanda Coleman, 48, was pronounced dead at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital by the emergency room physician.
Mercer County Coroner Sonny Ransdell said the cause of death was smoke inhalation.
Also residing in the apartment was David Pemberto, 34, who escaped the blaze uninjured.
Apparently Coleman, who had one leg amputated above the knee, was trapped inside and could not escape. Her body was found in the front bedroom, said Harrodsburg Assistant Fire Chief Monty Trower.
Harrodsburg firefighters responded to the fire call at 8:41 p.m. The firefighters got Coleman out of the apartment and began CPR until she could be transported to the hospital.
Trower said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental and apparently started in a small sofa in the front of the apartment. Both Coleman and Pemberto were heavy smokers, he said.
The apartment had a lot of heat and smoke damage, said Trower. The area around the sofa, where the fire is believed to have originated, was the most severely burned or damaged by the fire.
Most of the damage to the apartment complex was contained to Coleman's five-room apartment, said Harrodsburg firefighter Joe Monroe. However, the whole building did receive some smoke damage, especially the apartment above Coleman's.
On Friday, the state fire marshall conducted an investigation as is required when there is a fatality. The case was turned back over to the Harrodsburg Fire Department.
Approximately 22 firefighters were called to the scene, and the department was on site for approximately three hours.
