Everett Maples, 89, formerly of Hustonville, died Thursday, September 25, 2003 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born July 11, 1914 in Casey County, he was the son of the late Jim and Ella Hall Maples.
He was retired and had previously worked as a farmer, as a custodian at Haggin Memorial Hospital and at Harlow Elementary School. He had also worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter.
He was a Kentucky Colonel, was a member of Stanford First Church of God and served on the church’s board of directors.
Survivors include: his wife, Hazel Wyatt Maples; four daughters, Deanna Kuehl, Vivian Coleman, Gayle Breeding and Paula Maples, all of Harrodsburg; three sons, Ronald Maples, Lancaster, Lonnie and Bobby Maples, both of Stanford; one brother, Freeman, Maples, Hustonville; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 27, at the W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland with Rev. Paul Bastin officiating. Burial was in the Hustonville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Adrian Waddell, Micah Waddell, Chris Waddell, Jeffrey Coleman, Scott Maples, Rick Jenkins, Ronnie Maples and Lee Horner. Honorary bearers were Richard Kuehl, Tom Breeding Leroy Petry, Lawrence Kidd, Ron Grote and Linda Davis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stanford First Church of God Building Fund, 410 Logan Avenue, Stanford, KY 40484.
JAMES PHILLIPS
James Edward Phillips, 74, of Bondville Road, Salvisa, died Thursday, September 25, 2003 at the Heritage Hall Care Center in Lawrenceburg.
Born November 9, 1928 in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Roy and Myrtle Kinder Phillips. He was the widower of Margaret Coke Phillips.
He was a retired electrician with Paul Young Electric in Lawrenceburg, a member of the Goshen Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the U. S. Army.
Survivors include: one daughter, Juanita (Jamie) Jones, Lawrenceburg; one son-in-law, Wayne Johnson, of Monticello; one sister, Louise Rogers, Harrodsburg; one brother, Kenneth Phillips, Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ada Johnson, a sister, Minnie Belle Houghton, two brothers, Roy J. Phillips and William Houston “Mush” Phillips; and a half brother, Robert Phillips.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 29, at Gash Memorial Chapel, Lawrenceburg, with Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chris Spivey, Lonnie Johnson, Wayne Phillips, Ronnie Phillips, Jimmy Phillips, Glen Rogers Jr., Allen Phillips, and Lou Colpitts. Honorary bearers were Ricky Phillips, Donnie Rogers, Dave Disponett, Charles Chambers, Earl Riley, Billy Collins, Carl Hellard, and Allen Spaulding.

JAMES PIKE
James A. “Jimmy” Pike, 66, of Carrollton, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Monday, September 22, 2003 at his residence.
Born June 13, 1937 in Yosemite, he was the son of the late Marion and Lula Dorn Pike.
He was a retied engineer for CSX Railroad, a former employee of Dallas Dean, a musician and a member of the Carroll County Gospel Singers.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army.
Survivors, include: his wife, Alice F. Pike, Carrollton; two daughters, Tina Davis, Virginia Beach, VA, and Robin Kellogg, Clinton, NC; one son, James “Buddy” Pike Jr., Clinton, NC; one stepdaughter, Shonnie “Alice” Hicks Luquer, Nashville, TN; three stepsons, Jack Hicks, Clifford Hicks and Pat Hicks, all of Carrollton; one sister, Rose Harrell of KY; one brother, Scott Pike, Hugo, OK; seven grandchildren, seven step grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Letha Rich, five sisters, Beulah Hickson, Dorothy Floyd, Alma Zellars, Linda Pollack and Fredia McQueary, and four brothers, Arnold, Preston, Harold and Charles Pike.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 25, at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton, with burial in the Carrollton IOOF Cemetery.
GENEVA PHILLIPS
Geneva Carrier Phillips, 82, Harrodsburg Health Care Center, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at the Health Care Center.
Born June 3, 1921 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mollie Coslow Carrier. She was the widow of John “Coonie” Roy Phillips.
She was a homemaker and a member of Eller’s Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include: six sons, Johnnie C. Phillips, Loyd R. Phillips, Terry Phillips and Danny Phillips, all of Harrodsburg, Bobby A. Phillips and Connie J. Phillips, both of Danville; four daughters, Shelby Jean Devine and Mary A. Phillips, both of Harrodsburg, Rose Cottrell, Williamstown, and Brenda Andrade, Danville; one brother, Russell Carrier, Harrodsburg; three sisters, Mary Roberts and Beulah Smith, both of Harrodsburg, and Lettie Smith, Lawrenceburg; 27 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Marvin, Raymond, Garnett and Elwood Carrier, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 27, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Bro. Harold Best and Loyd Phillips, Jr. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Loyd Phillips, Jr., Nicholas Moore, Jason Derousse, Michael Phillips, Jacob Phillips, and David Phillips, Jr. Honorary bearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
MARSHALL SANDERS
Col. Marshall Andrew Sanders, 86, of Louisville, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003.
Born March 29, 1917 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Elvada and Bess Davenport Sanders.
He was a graduate of Transylvania College, retired from the U. S. Army as the Kentucky Department Director for Selective Services and owner / operator of the Margate Apartments.
He was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church and served on the Baptist Seminary Foundation.
Survivors include: his wife, Lucille Gritton Sanders, Louisville; one daughter, Joyce Lynn Sanders; one sister, Maxine Sanders Schneider.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 26, at St. Matthews Baptist Church, 3515 Grandview Ave., Louisville. Burial was in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to the St. Matthews Baptist Church building fund.
LUCILLE SIMS
Lucille Isham Sims, 85, 851 South College Street, died Saturday, September 27, 2003 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born May 28, 1918 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late John and Ada Hendren Isham. She was the widow of William D. Sims.
She was a homemaker and member of the Mt. Zion Church of Christ.
Survivors include: two sons, Wendell W. Sims, Coxes Creek, and Bruce C. Sims, Mackville; two daughters, Alissa J. Adams, Palm Harbor, FL and Nancy L. Blacketer, New Albany, IN; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Loyd and Bishop Isham, and one sister Hattie V. Burns.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 1 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Kelly Baker and Carl Blacketer.
Burial was in the Battle Cemetery in Washington County.
Pallbearers were Darrel Baker, Shirley Yeaste, Granville Moore, W. Connie Isham, Larry Isham, and Freddy Bottoms.
ALTA VANOVER
Mrs. Alta Vanover, of Harold, KY, died Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born June 28, 1906 in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late William and Ellen Coleman Lockhart. She was the widow of John T. Vanover.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include: four daughters, Dorothy Meade, Pikeville, Betty Keel, Jeffersonville, IN, Monette Keathley, Nicholasville, and Mary Hunt, Toler Creek, KY; two sons, William Vanover, Olympia, WA and Roger Vanover of Nicholasville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four children, Tom, Hubert and Johnny Vanover, and Martha Lovern.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October, 4, at the Lucas and Hall Funeral Home in Pikeville. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
MILITARY RITES
Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, Post #6935, VFW and DAV Post #54 conducted Military Rites for Albert Meinze at Spring Hill Cemetery on September 18, 2003.
Those attending were: Curtis Sherrow, Joe Harlow, Marion Mershon, Tom Rappleye, Lucian Landers, Tommy Denny, Preston Burgin, Howard H. Howells and James Tewmey.
Representing the army were Sgt. Antonio Bassa and Pfc. William Wilczek.
Jerry Freeman served as bugler.
GILBERT BOTTOM
Gilbert Bruce Bottom, 68, of Lexington, died Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the Hospice Care Center.
Born May 24, 1935 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Taylor Bottom and Beatrice Bottom Stanforth.
He was a graduate of Harrodsburg High School and the University of Kentucky and was a registered professional engineer, having been associated with the firms of Proctor & Ingels, Watkins, Burrows & Assoc., Hugh Dillehay & Assoc., and Staggs & Fisher.
He was a partner in the firm of Anderson, Frazier, and Adams Consulting Engineers from 1973 until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of Central Kentucky Computer Society, a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Korean Conflict and a member of Southern Acres Christian Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Irene Freeman Bottom, Lexington; two daughters, Terri (Trippy) Clark, Flemingsburg, Mickey (Jeff) Miller, Nicholasville; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Bowen Bottom.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 6, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, with Bruce Carpenter officiating. Burial was in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Mitch Cocanougher, Pat Faith, Jim Fathergill, Wade Fathergill, James Hilton, Chick Lanham, Thad Lanham, and Bobby Reister.

JUDY CAREY
Judy Patterson Carey, 56, of 830 North College Street, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003.
Born December 22, 1946 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of Carolyn Jane Black Harmon, Harrodsburg and the late Walter Carroll Harmon.
She was a homemaker, an avid Rook player and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include: former spouses, Larry Patterson and Bill Carey, both of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Deonna Patterson Serrano, La Bandi Patterson, and Adana Zuniga-Patterson, all of Harrodsburg; a foster son/nephew, Brent Harmon, Harrodsburg; a foster daughter/niece, Kim Harmon, Harrodsburg; two special family members, Dru Patterson and Bobbie Jean Tyler, both of Harrodsburg; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 9, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Jeff Sparks. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Gary "Red" Hume, Rick Moberly, Jeff Harmon, James "Ottie" O'Nan, John Rider, and Brent Harmon. Honorary bearers will be John Hardin, Linda Carter, Pam Devine, Wanda Rogers and Shane Powell.
Visitation will be after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
