JIMMY TURPIN
Man Dies In Truck Train Collision
Jimmy Turpin, 51, of Hopewell Road was fatally injured Sunday night when a truck he was driving was struck by a train at the crossing on Jackson Pike three miles north of Harrodsburg.
Deputy Mercer County Coroner Scott Moseley pronounced Turpin dead at the scene at 9:30 p.m. and said he died from multiple trauma.
Turpin was eastbound on Jackson Pike and apparently attempted to cross the railroad crossing when a train was approaching. The train struck Turpin’s vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries to Turpin and severe damage to his vehicle.
According to a report filed by Kentucky State Reconstructionist Trooper C.R. Hall, a preliminary investigation indicated all of the railroad warning equipment was working properly prior to the collision. “At this time, there is no foul play or alcohol suspected. The investigation is ongoing,” Hall said in the report.
Moseley said the train conductor said he was traveling the recommended speed for the grade and area and that the lights and bells at the crossing seemed to be working when the accident occurred.
While there were no witnesses to the accident, Moseley said when emergency rescue officials arrived at the scene, the lights and bell warnings were working at the crossing.
Turpin was the husband of Barbara Sparks Turpin, father of Chris Turpin of Winchester and Stephanie Turpin of Harrodsburg, and son of Gladys Preston Turpin of Mercer County and the late Edward A. Turpin.
He was a Vietnam veteran and served with the Kentucky National Guard. He was a former employee of ATR in Danville and a lineman for Bluegrass Energy.
