LEE BANTA

Lee Roy “Doodle” Banta, 69, of Pleasureville, died Friday, October 24, 2003 at Jewish Hospital in Shelbyville.

A native of Henry County, he was the son of the late Boyd and Lula Ellen Fink Banta. He was a member of the Pleasureville Baptist Church and taught plumbing at Jefferson State Vocational School.

He had served 30 years with the Pleasureville Fire Department where he had served as assistant chief and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was an army veteran.

Survivors include: his wife, Wanda Long Banta, Pleasureville; one daughter, Kim Banta Batts, Pleasureville; two brothers, Marvin Banta, Pleasureville and Lloyd Thomas Banta, Shelbyville; two sisters, Ruth Ellegood and Anna Mary Eldridge, both of Pleasureville. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Lawrence Banta and Ray Banta, and a son-in-law, Gene Batts.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 28, at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville, with Rev. Jerry Anderson and Rev. Don Waterfill officiating. Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerry Beasley, Robert Culton, Darrell McAlister, Allen Thomas Rucker, Paul Sallee Jr. and Rodney Young. Honorary bearers were the Henry County High School football team.

JACK COATNEY

Jack M. Coatney, 50, of 451 Oakley Avenue, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 30, 1953 in Nicholas County, he was the son of Lester W. Coatney, Carlisle, and the late Agnes McKenzie Coatney.

He was a sales representative for Bill Heard Chevrolet in Nashville, TN and was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

Survivors, include: his wife, Jesseca R. Horn Coatney, Harrodsburg; two sons, Phillip Ryan Coatney and Jack M. Coatney, both of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Season Coatney Prewitt and Sara Morgan Coatney, both of Harrodsburg; one brother, Keith Coatney, Lexington; one sister, Dana Yeager, Harrodsburg: and one granddaughter, Brinkley Prewitt, Harrodsburg.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 29, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Bro. Rick Snyder. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Randy Dunigan, Gary Hurst, Carl Coatney, Kevin Gibson, Larry Catlett, Bobby Dennis, Gary Sanford, Kenny Stratton, George Key and Timmy Shallcross.

LLOYD GOODLETT

H. Lloyd Goodlett, 94, of Louisville, died Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at Norton’s Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville Inpatient Unit.

He was a retired teacher and taught at Williamsburg, West Clark Community School, Sellersburg, IN and other schools in IN and KY, including Mercer County.

He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Survivors include: his wife, Della Vincent Goodlett, Louisville; three brothers, O. B. Goodlett, Lawrenceburg, Guy Goodlett, Burgin, and Raymond Goodlett, Edmonds, WA.

A memorial service was held Saturday, October 25, at Pearson’s Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville.

JEWELL GREEN

Jewell Cummins Green, 85, of 705 Fairview Court, died Thursday, October 23, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born January 1, 1918 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Cordelia Smith Cummins.

She was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse for Kentucky State Hospital.

Survivors, include: her husband, Edgar L. Green, Harrodsburg; one son, William "Bill" Prewitt, Lexington; three daughters, Nancy Mayes, Perryville, Louise Nowlin, Harrodsburg, and Barbara Pinkston, Danville; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and a special care giver, Mary Hooper, Harrodsburg.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 25 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Dr. Robert DeFoor and John David Lane. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Leslie Nowlin, Timmy Nowlin, Charlie Nowlin, Earl Pinkston, Joe Mayes, and Johnny Mayes.

DOROTHY MONTZ

Dorothy Mae Fletcher Montz, 77, of 830 North College Street died Monday, October 27, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born January 29, 1926 in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Frances Potts Fletcher

She was a homemaker and a member of the North Middletown Christian Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Hiram Montz, Harrodsburg; one son, Charles Michael Hamilton, Pineville, and one grandson John Michael Hamilton, Pineville.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, October 30 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Bro. Don Chase.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. Thursday until the hour of service at the chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of one's choice.

VIRGINIA NOEL

Virginia S. Noel, 86, of Greenbriar Drive, Harrodsburg died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born December 16, 1916 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Madie Beasley Sanders. She was the widow of Clinton G. Noel.

She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught at both Mercer County and Harrodsburg School Systems for 37 years. She was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association.

She was an active member of Harrodsburg Baptist Church, having served as a former choir member, Sunday School teacher, a member of the Welcome Sunday School class, Keen Age Bible class, Light and Lively Senior Adult group, and was also a member of the WMU. She also was a member of the Hopewell Homemakers.

Survivors include: one son, Gary C. (Mary) Noel, Harrodsburg; two sisters, Margaret Ann Deering, Perryville, and Oneeta Barnes, Lancaster; three grandchildren Julie (Scott) Hammons, Burgin, Mark A. (Ginger) Noel, Columbus, OH, and Laura Noel, Harrodsburg; and two great-grandchildren Jessica and Kelci Hammons, both of Burgin. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Sanders.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 29 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home, with Dr. Robert DeFoor and John Hockersmith officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Hammons, O. H. Robinson, Ronnie Barnes, Donnie Barnes, Mike Darland and Kim McWhorter.

HOUSTON ROBERTSON

Houston L. Robertson, 59, of 1215 Stratton Road, died Saturday, October 25, 2003 as a result of a farm accident.

Born January 31, 1944 in Perry County, he was the son of Alma McGuffey, Danville, and the late Floyd Robertson, Sr.

He was retired from Kentucky State Government having worked for the Cabinet of Human Resources - Department of Medicare.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of the National Rifle Association, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the VFW and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Virginia Sue Stratton Robertson, Harrodsburg; four sons, Douglas Carter, Manchester, Houston Lee Robertson, Jr., Louisville, Bobby Glenn Matherly, New Paltz, NY, and William Daniel Matherly, Harrodsburg; two daughters, Laura Lynn Ciak, Kinston, NC, and Kimberly Sue Walker, Harrodsburg; three brothers, Floyd Robertson, Jr., Danville, William Robertson, Stanford, and Roger Robertson, Danville; two sisters, Sheila Adams, Danville, and Barbara McGlone, Lancaster; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 28, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Rev. David Culp. Burial was in the Stratton Cemetery in Mercer County with Military Rites.

Pallbearers were Kevin and Kyle Lyons, Danny Matherly, David and Tim Robertson, Preston Hansford, Brad and Brian Adams, and Brandon McGlone. Honorary bearers were Orville Butts, Joshua Foster , Kevin Hansford, Kenneth Wilson, Tony Carter, Jeff Stamper, and Elsie Hopper.

Memorial contributions are suggested to one's favorite charity.

VIRGINIA SATTERLY

Virginia Robinson Satterly, 90, of Meadows East Health Care Center, Louisville, formerly of Mercer County, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 in Louisville.

Born October 4, 1913 in Salvisa, she was the daughter of the late Henry and May Nichols Robinson. She was the widow of Arvil L. Satterly.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist church.

Survivors include one niece, Patti Acree, Louisville and two nephews, J. R. Thompson and Ron J. Acree.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 29, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Humane Society of Louisville.

LYNN SKELTON
Lynn Edward Skelton, 60, of 675 Herrington Woods, Burgin, died Friday, October 24, 2003 at his residence.

Born February 24, 1943 in McKeesport, PA, he was the son of the late John and Marie Illman Skelton.

He was a retired Project Engineer for VA Hospital in Oakland, PA, employed by Palumbo Lumber Company, Lexington, and a member of BrynMare Church of Christ, in White Oak, PA.

He was an army veteran of the Vietnam conflict.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Caravan Shrine Temple, the National Yacht Club, was Rear Commodore with the Herrington Lake Coast Guard Auxiliary, and also a member of the Wet Bottom Boys Motorcycle Club.

Survivors include: his wife, Patricia Verlander Skelton, Burgin; one daughter, Heather Lynn Kersting, North Huntingdon, PA; and three grandchildren. He was also a nephew of Mrs. Carroll Cole, Harrodsburg, and cousin of Carolyn and John William Cole. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Skelton.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 29, at the Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home in McKeesport, PA. Burial was in the Jefferson Memorial Parks, Pittsburg, PA with military rites.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of local arrangements.

KENNETH WITHERSPOON

Kenneth Barry Wither-spoon, 70, of 142 Dedman Street, died Monday, October 27, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born January 15, 1933 in Wilmington, NC, he was the son of the late Virgil Clyde and Danie Shipman Witherspoon.

He graduated from Tri-State University, Angola, IN with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a retired employee of Corning, Inc. of Harrodsburg.

He was a member of the Harrodsburg Presbyterian Church, the Harrodsburg Historical Society, the James Harrod Preservation Trust, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Roman Eagle Lodge Shrine, and the Friends of the Hunley. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a Kentucky Admiral

Survivors, include: his wife, Margaret Suggs Witherspoon, Harrodsburg; two daughters, Kim (Richard) Nesbitt, Lexington, and Beth Smith, Harrodsburg; one sister, Jean Mills, Hamlet, NC; three grandchildren, Hailey Alexis Logue, Alexander Witherspoon Logue, and Sarah Daleny Smith, all of Harrodsburg. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael K. Witherspoon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 30, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Rev. Joe Tarry. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ben and Charles Black, Brian Burns, Duane Hall, Henry Grawl and Galen Neaard. Honorary bearers include Bob Moore, Gene Lawson, Bill Barker, George Rogers and Harold Davis.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 29 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and after 7:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of service at the chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Harrodsburg Presbyterian youth.
