Kentucky Marriage Records by County

MILITARY RITES

American Legion Post #52, Disabled American Veterans Chapter #54, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6935 conducted Military Rites for Robert Lee Shewmaker Jr. at Spring Hill Cemetery on Oct. 18, 2004.

Those attending were: James Tewmey, Preston Burgin, Joe Harlow, Curtis Harlow, Tommy Denny, Lucian Landers, Tom Rappleye, Kris Stines, Floyd Shirley and Howard H. Howells.

Army representatives were SSG Charles R. Jackson and SSG Rejifiel J. Graham from Fort Knox.

MARIE BALL
Marie Ball, 79, Lancaster, wife of H.C. Ball, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born Dec. 19, 1924 in Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Sarah Lane Asberry.

She was a homemaker and a member of the White Oak Christian Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Betty and son-in-law Michael Votaw, originally of Harrodsburg and now of Lancaster; two sons, Carol (Bobbie Jean) Ball and Eddie (Janice) Ball, both of Lancaster; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Friday, Oct. 22 at the W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland with Rev. Daryl Hodge officiating. Burial was in Poplar Grove Cemetery in Casey County.

Pallbearers were Aaron and Chris Ball, Bryan Clark, Michael Wilson and Charles, Jeff and Frebrin Asberry.

Honorary pallbearers were Brock and Crystal Coleman, Sarah Ball and DeSha Pierce.

HENRY GRAY
Henry Moore Gray, 79, St. Augustine Health and Rehabilitation Center, St. Augustine, FL, widower of Lucille Martine Boswell Gray, died Oct. 24, 2004.

Born, Nov. 9, 1924 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Floyd and Parlee Carmichael Gray.

He was a retired employee of Wise Industries in FL and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the 351st Infantry, Co. D, 88th Infantry Division, Blue Devils. He was awarded the Bronze Star when wounded in Italy. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include: two daughters, Vicki Lynn (Todd) Tolerico of St. Augustine, FL and Linnie Jayne (William) Burwell of Pittsburg, PA; one son, Martin Dale (Lenore) Gray of Salvisa; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Floyd, Lonnie Lee and Donald Gray, all of Mercer County and one sister, Myrtle Gray Turner of Buffalo.

Graveside services will be conducted at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL with full military honors.

Arrangements are incomplete at Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine, FL.

WILLIAM MAY JR.

William M. “Billy” May Jr., 73, Shakertown Road, Danville, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004 at his residence.

Born Feb. 1, 1931 in Lebanon, he was a son of the late William Marion and Gladys Pauline Boswell May.

He was a self-employed truck driver and farmer and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army in Korea and was awarded a Purple Heart Medal.

Survivors include: one brother, Robert A. May of Carrollton; one aunt, Dorothy Semonis of Harrodsburg, and one cousin, Barbara J. May of Danville.

Private services will be held and burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.

The family requests that donations be made to Heritage Hospice.

Arrangements are being handled by Stith Funeral Home in Danville.

STACY MILLER
Stacy Pierce Miller, 60, Harrodsburg, husband of Rita Hall, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 31, 1944 in Bell County, he was the son of the late Raymond Franklin and Myrtle Mary Merida Miller.

He was a 1963 graduate of Lone Jack High School in Pineville. He was a member of Shakertown Baptist Church and was a retired truck driver for UPS where he drove the triple trailers. He was a member of the UPS Circle of Honor, he loved being a grandfather, fishing and was active with the Mercer County Relay for Life.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Robert Steven Miller, and one daughter, Kimberly Sue Hockensmith, both of Harrodsburg; three brothers, Walter Dunn of Monroe, OH, Wayne Miller of Junction City and Henry Miller of Lawrenceburg; three sisters, Zora “Bea” Abrams and Betty Jean Carpenter, both of Harrodsburg, and Mattie McGeorge of Pineville; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Noah Dunn, Ira “Johnny” Dunn, Charlie Miller, and Franklin Miller, and two sisters, Nancy Dunn and Ethel Miller.

The funeral was held Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Dunn and Rev. Robert Miller officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Steven Miller, Arthur Kenneth Cox, Shawn Hockensmith, Bobby Hall and Ronnie and David Abrams.

Honorary pallbearers were Shane, Travis, Marty, John and Michael Abrams and Stacy, Lionel, Mark and George Jones.

CLARA PUCKETT
Clara Mae Watts Puckett, 65, Horn Drive, Lawrenceburg, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1939 in Mercer County, she was a daughter of the late Marcus P. and Verna Preston Watts.

She was a certified medical technician and worked with private duty patients, was a member the Women’s Auxiliary and of Shiloh Christian Church in Lawrenceburg where she was a member of the Shiloh Singers.

Survivors include: two daughters, Judy Adams of Frankfort and Anita (Jonathan) Beasley of Lawrenceburg; one brother, Henry Watts of Harrodsburg; one sister, Wilma Robinson of Mercer County, and three grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Stan Houser and Bert Patterson officiating. Burial was in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Serafini, Jessie Stone, Mike Shryock, Gilbert Young, Tom Richey and James Hammonds.

JOHN SCOTT
John J. Scott, 83, widower of Fay Ice Scott, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 in Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.

Born April 17, 1921 in East St. Louis, IL, he was the son of Paul and Nancye Witherspoon Scott, formerly of Mercer County.

Survivors include: one daughter, Rose Carolyn (Ray) Downs of Ekron; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service was held Monday, Oct. 18 at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home in Louisville.

RALPH SPEAKES
Ralph Arnold Speakes, 79, Buckingham Lane, Lexington, formerly of Garrard County and Harrodsburg, husband of Mary Ruth Ballard Speakes, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004 at his residence.

Born May 15, 1925 in Garrard County, he was a son of the late Robert Lois Speakes and Lillie Mae Arnold Speakes.

He was a retired school teacher and former Garrard County tax assessor, WWII Army veteran, Florida shuffle board state champion and member of the Mt. Zion Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Ralph A. (Linda) Speakes Jr. of Paris and Kenny (Judy) Speakes of Winchester and formerly of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Beth Kessler of Lexington and Nita (Mehrzad) Etebar of Frankfort; two stepsons; one brother, Harold Thomas (Gail) Speakes of Paint Lick; 20 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Nancy Park Speakes and Margaret Catherine Speakes, and one stepdaughter, Joan Haddix.

The funeral will be Friday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Lancaster with Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 28 from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

ARLENE WALKUP
Arlene Dean Walkup, 66, widow of James L. Walkup, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004 in Louisville.

Born in Mercer County, she was a daughter of the late Elmore and Gladys Crossfield Dean.

She was a retired manager for AT&T after 39 years and was a member of the Lakewood Baptist Church and an avid golfer.

Survivors include: six sisters, Doris Reece, Janice Phillips and Maxine Taylor, all of Harrodsburg, Joyce Sturgeon of Louisville, Rita Jo Cerrato of Alaclua, FL, and Brucie Dunn of Lexington; two brothers, Robert Dean of CA and Lois (Baldy) Dean of Salvisa; two stepdaughters, Marchele Durham and Renee McCarty; one step granddaughter; four step grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. at the Lakewood Baptist Church, 13803 Shelbyville Rd., Louisville with entombment in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Friday from 3 until 8 p.m. at the Pearson-Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Rd., Louisville.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Louisville or one’s favorite charity.

MORRIS CAREY

Morris Andrew Carey, 77, Elmwood Drive, Lexington, husband of Onita Graham Carey, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004 at his home.

Born Feb. 9, 1927 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Herbert Calvin and Rosa Pulliam Carey.

He was a retired employee of Nabisco and was a member of the Catholic faith.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Rosa C. Hicks and Jenny Cay Carey, both of Lexington; one sister, Carolyn C. Browning of Harrodsburg; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Carey.

Private graveside services were held Sunday, Oct. 31 in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Father Joseph Muench officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, KY 40504-3277.
