KENNETH BURNS
Former Mercer Sheriff Kenneth Burns Dies
Former Mercer County Sheriff Kenneth Burns, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 8 at his residence after a long illness.
Burns retired in 1992 as Mercer County sheriff after serving three terms in office.
Mercer Deputy Beverly Stratton, who was hired by Burns to work in the office to assist her mother, the late Gladys Dean, said Bums was popular with Mercer Countians because he was easy to talk to and people trusted him. She said he was very accessible to the public, opening the office at 7:30 a.m. and closing at 4:30 p.m., She said he didn't even leave the office for lunch.
He retired, but he never quit being interested, said Mercer County Sheriff Ralph Anderson, who served as a deputy under Burns.
Even after retirement, the fornier sheriff continued to visit the office weekly or more often. "He retired, but he never really quit," said Anderson. "He was always interested."
Anderson gives credit to Burns for his own career in law enforcement.
"Kenneth gave me the job," Anderson explained. "I started to work for him as a deputy in 1984. He was a great mentor to me, a best friend and a father figure all rolled into one.
"His generosity toward me and his encouragement to me got me to where I am today. Without Kenneth Burns, I wouldn't be here today as the sheriff of Mercer County, in the political arena or in the world of law enforcement."
Anderson said Burns was well-liked as a sheriff.
"Kenneth had this country charm and flair about him that naturally drew people to him. He put everybody at ease when they were around him."
From prosecuting attorneys to families of the accused to the victims, Anderson said Burns had "a way of calming people and reassuring them." He also said Burns did not see financial backgrounds, race or social standing because those things did not matter to him. He treated everyone the same. Anderson said those are some of the reasons Burns was successful as a three-term sheriff.
As an employer, Stratton also had kind words for Burns.
"He was a wonderful person to work for," she explained.. "He was such an honest, down-to-earth person. He was dependable and he was a good boss.
"He was a wonderful person," she said. "He was a good man and we will miss him."
An old calendar hanging on the wall in the main office was considered Burns' calendar. Anderson said Burns tore the pages off when he came to visit acid in the days that followed, the staff could look at the calendar and know how long since Burns last visit. Others are now tearing the days off the calendar, but Burns' presence still lingers.
Anderson said the office is still modeled after the standards set by the former sheriff. He said a friendly, down-home, atmosphere is what Burns encouraged and Burns also instilled in him the need to have an open door policy and be acmodating.
"He was a great friend and he will be sadly missed by me," said Anderson.
Born Nov. 9, 1926 in Washington County, Burns was the son of the late J. W. and Ora Lee Russell Burns and was the widower of Pauline Moms Burns.
Along with serving as Mercer County's sheriff, he was a former service station owner and operator. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a member of the Kentucky Sheriff's Association, Mercer Masonic Lodge # 777 F & AM, and Freedom Baptist Church, Lawrenceburg. He was a graduate of Mackville High School.
He is survived by two .daughters, Joyce Carol Logue and Reva Gale Spalding, and two sisters, Nina Bottoms and Betty Coffman, all of Harrodsburg.
