JASON BUGG

Jason Bugg, 77, 747 Fairview Court, died Monday, April 24, 2000, of an apparent heart attack. He was pronounced dead by Mercer County Coroner Sonny Ransdell when he was found in his vehicle in the back of Beaumont Plaza.

According to a Harrodsburg Police report, Bugg was operating the vehicle when he apparently suffered a fatal heart attack. The car traveled uncontrolled heading north in the back of the parking lot and struck a concrete pole.

Born November 5, 1922 in Washington County, Bugg was the son of the late Thomas Allen and Zanie Lowe Bugg.

He was a former owner of the Redwood Restaurant and he attended the University of Cincinnati as an engineering major.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he received an EAME ribbon with three bronze stars and an Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

At age 21, while a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, Bugg was shot down in May of 1944 and his family was notified he was missing in action, and a few weeks later, told he had been killed. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously and his parents received a personal commendation from President Franklin D. Roosevelt praising his death in service to his country.

About six months later, his family learned he was alive and being held a prisoner of war by the Germans, first in Germany and then in Poland. In February 1945, he and nearly 10,000 fellow POWs were forced to march 56 days over 700 miles out of Poland into Germany to avoid the advancing Russian front.

Bugg endured the march and 18 months of being a prisoner of war. He returned home to his family in Harrodsburg and for nearly 40 years, he did not speak of his war experiences. Finally, in 1983, he began to reminisce with other veterans about his experiences and his story was shared in a book about the 409th Bomb Group of World War II. He also learned that the Army still had him listed as killed in action. The mistake was corrected.

After returning to Harrodsburg, Bugg had a career as a successful business man and was involved in many areas of local civic life. He was a partner in the White Cottage Restaurant and owned the Redwood Restaurant. He was on the founding board of directors of the Fort Harrod Drama, served three terms as president of the Mercer Chamber of Commerce, was president of the Harrodsburg Rotary Club and treasurer of the Jaycees.

He is survived by four sons, Allen and Edward Lynn Bugg, both of Lexington; David Thomas Bugg, Hopkinsville; Everett Lawrence Bugg, Richmond; one daughter, Brenda Marie Elkins, New Albany, IN; three brothers, Marvin Bugg, Henderson; Sterling Bugg, Oxnard, CA, and Warren Bugg, Danville, and seven grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, April 26, at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating.

Pallbearers were Kim Knight, Barry Elkins, Byron Bugg, Brice Long, Mike Calhoun and Wayne Bugg.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Disabled American Veterans, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
