LARRY COFFMAN
Convicted Rapist
Serving 920 Years Dies In Prison
A convicted rapist serving 920 years in prison, part of which were from convictions in Harrodsburg, has died in prison.
Larry Ray Coffman, 51, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Feb. 13 in the hospital in LaGrange from a terminal illness.
He was convicted in Mercer and Washington counties for the repeated sexual abuse of his 11-year-old stepdaughter approximately 15 to 17 years earlier. In 1992, he pleaded guilty in Mercer County to sodomy and rape and received two 20-year sentences to be served consecutively. In January 1993, he was convicted in the Washington County Circuit Court on 100 counts of rape, sodomy, sexual abuse and intimidating a witness, according to The Springfield Sun. The jury recommended an 880-year sentence. Coffman was sentenced in Washington County to 20 years for 16 counts of rape and 20 years each for 28 counts of sodomy to run consecutively, and one year each for the 28 counts of sexual abuse and intimidating a witness to run concurrently.
The abuse started in 1976 soon after the victim's mother married Coffman. The victim was 10 at that time and they lived on a farm outside Mackville, according to a story in The Springfield Sun. The family moved to Mercer County when the victim was 12. A few years later she went to live with her father who got her into counseling because she was having nightmares.
The woman went on to marry and have two children of her own. Several years later, according to The Springfield Sun, she encountered Coffman in a store. She was in her 20s and was accompanied by her daughter, a toddler at the time. He looked her up and down, then did the same to her daughter and said, "Hmm, looking good," she told The Springfield Sun.
The woman said that this was a wake-up call to her that if she did not press charges against Coffman, he would abuse other children.
