SHERMAN SIRES

Sherman Sires Jr., 77, Boone Street, died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 2, 1927 at Alton Station in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Sherman Sires Sr. and Zula Elza Cox Sires and the widower of Bessie Mae Lunsford Sires.

He was a retired security guard for Hallmack, Inc., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two stepsons, Charles Yocum of Muncie, IN and Sidney Yocum of Harrodsburg; two stepdaughters, Nancy Yocum of Harrodsburg and Eugenia Rogers of Anderson County; three grandchildren, and one nephew, Connie Carlton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Church of Christ Cemetery with military rites.

Pallbearers will be Andrea and Jason Yocum; Cindy, Mathew and Russell Sims; Lonnie and Dena Cornish; John and Kain Rogers; Lisa Riddle; James and Michael Logue; Tammy Dean; Vicky Warner; Christy Hicks, and Keith Peach.

Honorary bearers will be Kerr and Lavania Riddle; Ashton and Allison Logue; Jennifer and Hannah Baker; Charles and Sherman Hicks; Dustin Griffieth; Barry Slaven; Sarah Todd, and Ashley, Kayla, Devin and Mason Peach.

Visitation Thursday from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

ADDIE WORLEY

Addie New Worley, 83, Holywood Dr., Lexington, died Thursday, March 10, 2004 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born Oct. 8, 1920 in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel T. and Laura Black New and the widow of Othor L. Worley.

She was a homemaker, a clerk for Superior Food Mart in Burgin for several years and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include: a son, Fred L. Worley of Harrodsburg; three brothers, Lester New of West Harrison, IN, Carl New of Muncie, IN and Cecil New of Louisville; two sisters, Ethel Coffey of Mt. Sterling and Geneva Kidd of Logansport, IN; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Saturday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Douglas Wesley officiating. Burial was in the Hickman Cemetery in Whitley City.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

GLADYS COYLE

Gladys Worley Coyle, 92, Danville Road, Perryville, died Tuesday, March 16 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born July 30, 1911 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Minnie Houp Worley and widow of Arthur B. Coyle.

She and her husband owned and operated the Coyle Funeral Home in Perryville which is now Wilder Funeral Home. She was among the first female licensed funeral directors in the state, having received her license in the 1940s. She served as the first female delegate to the National Funeral Directors convention from Kentucky.

She was one of the original owners of Elmwood Inn in Perryville.

Mrs. Coyle finished out the unexpired term as mayor of Perryville after the death of her husband, the longtime mayor, in 1969.

She was very instrumental in the development of the Perryville Battlefield State Park and along with the late Frank Rankin developed the Annual Boy Scout Trek at the battlefield. She served on the Kentucky State Heritage Commission under four separate governors. She was a founding member of Merchants Row Development Corporation and an honorary member of the Louisville Civil War Roundtable. She served on various boards including the Salvation Army, American Cancer Society and American Red Cross.

She was a member of the Perryville Baptist Church and the Perryville Homemakers Club.

Survivors include: one daughter, Lexie Hicks of Owensboro; two granddaughters, Ginger Greene of Owensboro and Dee Dee Yeagle of Lexington; Jim Gentry of Danville, whom she reared; three nieces, Barbara Brummett and Mary Morgan of Perryville and Martha Gray of Burgin, and one nephew, Sammy Worley of Lexington.

The funeral was held Friday, March 19 at the Perryville Baptist Church with Chris Brummett officiating.

Pallbearers were Lloyd, Scott and Jeff Brummett, Sammy and Jason Worley, Jackie and Tylan Gray and Shawn Minks.

Honorary bearers were Joe Tucker, Greg Robertson, Johnny Gentry, Roger Norvell, Travis Cochran, Charles Bond, Larry Webb, Steve Stephenson, Stewart McDermott Jr., Brian Williams, Stuart Powell, Jimmie Preston, Glen Decker, John Davis, King Pruitt and Mary Hamlin.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Gladys Coyle Memorial Fountain Fund, Farmers National Bank, 309 East Second St., Perryville, KY 40468 or Heritage Hospice.

REBECCA MAJESKE

Rebecca Majeske, 80, Talmage-Mayo Road, wife of Earl Clifford Majeske, died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility.

Born March 17, 1924 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Iva Mae Huddleston Shinkle.

She was past president of the Presbyterian Women’s Association, former member of the American Association of University Women, a life member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association, a volunteer at the Mt. Pleasant Hospital in Michigan for several years, a former school teacher at an Army base in CA, an avid gardener and loved to ice skate.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: four daughters, Suzanne (Dennis) Reinbold of Lowell, MI, Barbara Jo (Daniel) McGuire of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Patricia (Paul) Burberry of Harrodsburg and Elizabeth (Russell) Fimbinger, Marion, MI; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Maona Eaves.

The funeral was held Monday, March 22 at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church with Rev. Derek Baker officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were the grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, 801 Limestone, Suite E, Lexington, KY 40508.

WALLACE PARKS SR.

Wallace “Wally” Atwood Parks Sr., 67, Henrico Road, husband of Anna White Parks, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 15, 1936 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late James Monroe and Marie Williams Parks.

He was a member of the Little Zion Baptist Church in Burgin where he served as trustee and member of the senior adult choir.

He was a retired machine operator and chemical supervisor for IBM, Inc. in Lexington, a graduate and valedictorian of the West Side High School class of 1954.

Parks was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served as an air force police officer from 1955 until 1959 and then remained in the Air Force Reserve until 1961.

He was a member of the Loyal Benevolent Lodge #3 at East Burgin and served as a driver for the Mercer County Senior Citizens.

He was the current president of the Harrodsburg Lions Club, a Kentucky Colonel and a big University of Kentucky Wildcat fan.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Wallace (Marcia) Parks and Marty F. Parks, both of Lexington; one daughter, Jennifer Ann Parks of Lexington; three brothers, William Henry Parks Sr. and Charles Monroe Parks Sr., both of Harrodsburg and Lucian Edward Parks of GA; two sisters, Louise Phillips of San Diego, CA and Cora Parks Allen of Harrodsburg; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Dudley Parks and two sisters, Georgia Steel and Sarah Jones.

The funeral was conducted Monday, March 22 at the Little Zion Baptist Church with Bro. Phillip A. Yates officiating. Burial was in the Springhill Cemetery with military rites.

Pallbearers were Carl Almgren, Norman Bartleson, James Dunn, Andy Harris, James Ray Thurman and James Milburn.

Honorary bearers were members of the Harrodsburg Lions Club.

Arrangements were handled by Parks Funeral Home.

CONRAD PEAVLER

Conrad Peavler, 79, Mackville, husband of Velma Clark Peavler, died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born December 12, 1924 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Chester and Margie Warner Peavler.

He was a retired farmer, a former Ford Motor Company employee, a member of the Magnolia Masonic Lodge #201 F. & A.M. at Mackville, an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the V.F.W. Post 6951 at Mackville, American Legion Post 52 at Harrodsburg, the 82nd Airborne Association in Dayton, OH and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Hendren and Mary Emma Peavler.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Barry (Glenda) Peavler and Lowell (Kathy) Peavler, both of Mackville; one daughter, Beverly (Wayne) Russell of Harrodsburg; one sister, Modena Foster of Willisburg; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday, March 16 at the Deep Creek Baptist Church with Bro. Fred Whitacre officiating and Bro. Bobby Logue assisting. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery at Mackville with full military rites conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Pallbearers were Everett Lee Russell, Marvin Dearinger, Ezra Tatum Jr., Joe Russell, Carlton Shewmaker, Billy Yankey, Jim Powell and Joe Smith.

A masonic service was held Monday evening at the Carey and Son Funeral Home in Springfield with Billy Riggs delivering the eulogy.

WILLIAM ROBINSON

William “Ras” Robinson, 73, Salvisa, husband of Helen A. Robinson, died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at his residence.

Born March 19, 1931 in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James Harvey and Hester Humes Robinson.

He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, retired from Universal Fasteners, a former employee of The Perryville Battlefield, a member of the Salvisa Ruritan Club and a member of the Salvisa Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Michael Todd Robinson of Salvisa and Roy Lynn Robinson of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Rayford Robinson of Louisville and James “Red” Robinson of Harrodsburg; a grandson, William Michael Robinson of Harrodsburg; a granddaughter, Sarah Todd Robinson of Harrodsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Tuesday, March 23 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Jason Clark and Larry Koch officiating. Burial was in the Springhill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Larry Peyton, Steve Peyton, Danny Robinson, Chip Phillips, Ricky Bast and Charles Burkehead.

Honorary bearers were Bruce Goodlett, Ricky Peyton, Clifford Wright, members of the Salvisa Ruritan Club, nephews and brothers-in-law.
