VERDA WILLIAMS

Verda Maxine Bowman Williams, 83, Simpsonville, widow of Walter B. Williams, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at her home following an illness.

Born Oct. 17, 1920 in Pomeryton, she was a daughter of the late William T. and Iva Dorothy Lane Bowman.

She was a homemaker and devoted her life to raising her children. She was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include: five daughters, Carolyn "Sis" Rucker of Shelbyville, Norma Lee Morris of Eminence, Brenda Ried of Simpsonville, Bonnie Watson of New Castle and Linda Fraley of Cropper; five sons, Donald Williams of Port Royal, Doug Williams of Harrodsburg, Randy Williams of Shelbyville, Ralph Williams of Bethlehem and Jimmy Williams of Pendleton; one sister, Hazel Sweeney of Lexington; two brothers, John Bowman of Jeffersonville and Buford Bowman of Wellington; 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Denny Williams and two granddaughters, Tammy and Connie Carpenter.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 17 at Grove Hill Cemetery Chapel in Shelbyville with Pastor Bill Taylor officiating. Burial was in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Webb Funeral Home in Shelbyville.

FANNIE BOTTOM

Fannie Lou Milburn Bottom, 80, Perryville, widow of Ray Bottom, died Friday, April 23, 2004 in Danville.

Born March 6, 1924 in Washington County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mattie Reynolds Milburn.

Mrs. Bottom and her husband owned and operated the Viaduct Grocery in Danville. She was a private duty sitter and also worked as a receptionist at the Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville and Helm and Reynolds Realty. She was a member of the Salt River Baptist Church.

Survivors include: three sons, Kenneth Bottom of Danville, and Harvey and Ronnie Bottom of Perryville; three sisters, Elizabeth Masters of Springfield, Shirley Monhollon of Louisville, and Sue Howard of Erlanger; two brothers, Thomas Milburn Jr. of Louisville and Alben Milburn of IN; eight grandchildren; 15 great-children and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral was held Monday, April 26 at Wilder Funeral Home with Revs. Bob Milburn and Bob Bausum officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Bottom Jr., Scott Bottom, Ronnie Bottom Jr., Ted Hodge, Scott Preston, Duane Bell and Greg Wilson.

Honorary bearers were the great-grandsons and great-granddaughters.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Gideons International.

RUTH DAVIS

Ruth Kurtz Davis, 90, Lexington Road, widow of A.B. Davis, died Thursday, April 22, 2004 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born May 1, 1913 in Mercer County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Nora Voorhies Kurtz.

She was a former nurses' assistant and had been a volunteer at Harrodsburg Health Care Center. She was a member of Harrodsburg Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for 25 years, had been a choir member, and had worked in missions. She enjoyed collecting cups and saucers.

Survivors include: two brothers, Clarence Kurtz and Jeff Kurtz, both of Harrodsburg, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Davis; one brother, Alvin Kurtz, and five sisters, Jessie Kurtz Sims, Hazel Sims, Margaret Tumey, Naomi Rhea Kurtz, and Mary Louise Carter.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 24 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her nephews.

ARGO DEAN

Argo Dean, 86, Cooke Avenue, widower of Martha Hardin Dean, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born May 29, 1917 in Mercer County, he was a son of the late Marshall and Minnie Woods Dean.

He was a retired farmer, a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Bohon Christian Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Nora Gayle Dean and Phyllis Ann Devine, both of Harrodsburg; one brother, James Osborne Dean of Harrodsburg, and two grandchildren, Scott and Cindy Devine.

He was preceded in death by a son, Argo Harrison Dean.

The funeral will be today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. J.B. Gilliam officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with military rites.

Pallbearers will be Scott Devine, Allen Hardin, Louis Dean, Lynn Logue, Ed. King, Fred Anderson and Larry Wilham.

Visitation Thursday after 7:30 a.m. at the chapel.

MARIE LESTER

Marie Alford Lester, 71, Riverside Drive, widow of William Howard Lester, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at her residence.

Born April 24, 1933 in Mercer County, she was a daughter of the late Clinton and Sadie Miller Alford.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Bruner's Chapel Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, canning, reading, and playing bingo.

Survivors include: two sons, Dennis H. (Kathy) Lester of Burgin, and William Gregory (Carolyn) Lester of Harrodsburg; one sister, Nancy McElfresh of Danville, and three brothers, Bill Alford of NY, Robert Alford of Harrodsburg, and John Alford of Lexington; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, April 30 at 11 a.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Greg Humpert officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. and Friday after 7 a.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423.

ROBERT J. MANHART

Robert J. "Bobo" Manhart, 57, died April 7, 2004.

He was born Oct. 22, 1946. He was a professional horse trainer of three gated, five gated, stunt, race and his favorite, Texas cutting horses. He also trained circus animals. He was a Hollywood stuntman, polo enthusiast who played with Prince Charles, blacksmith, and he dealt with art and antiques. His love of horses brought him to Harrodsburg.

He was a member of Bruner's Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two brothers, William Manhart of Chicago, IL and Yoshi Manhart, and one nephew, Todd Manhart.

Arrangements were handled by the Cremation Society of Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Bruner's Chapel Baptist Church.

VIRGINIA RUSSELL

Virginia Joy Russell, 69, Burgin, wife of John Shelby Russell, died Friday, April 23, 2004 at her residence.

Born, June 25, 1934 in Burgin, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Rettie Satterly Sims Sr.

She was a retired Mercer Dress employee and baby sitter. She was a member of the Burgin Christian Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, Nathan Lynn (Michelle) Russell of Harrodsburg, and Tony Dewayne (Kyongyi) Russell of MI; two brothers, David Sims and Nathan Sims Jr., both of Burgin, and three grandchildren.

The funeral was held Monday, April 26 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Jeanette Lucas, Kenny Speaks and Mike Conover officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Bob Vanarsdale, Guy Harris, Bud Vanarsdale, Donnie Montgomery, Donnie Duncan and John Powell.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Burgin Christian Church, 300 West Main St., Burgin, KY 40310.

MONTIE CLAUNCH

Montie Burton Claunch, 48, Talmage-Mayo Road, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at his home.

Born Oct. 20, 1955 in Harrodsburg, he was a son of Magistrate J.B Claunch and Jean Claunch.

He was a 1973 graduate of Mercer County High School. He was a supervisor of roadside maintenance for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, a volunteer fireman for the Terrapin Fire Department for 18 years and a member of the Bluegrass Horse Pullers Association. He enjoyed antique automobiles and was an avid Kentucky basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball fan. He was a member of the Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: two brothers, Kevin (Donna) Claunch and Gerald (Trish) Claunch, both of Mercer County; one nephew; four nieces, and one great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Allen Dale Claunch.

The funeral will be Friday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bros. Elwood Norton, Barry Harmon and Lewis Walter officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Claunch, Tony Sanders, Joseph Sanders, Jeffrey Sanders, Scotty Sanders, Sonny Hamlin, Brandon Clem and John Bailey. Honorary bearers will be members of the Terrapin Volunteer Fire Department and Marty Claunch.

Visitation Thursday from 5 until 9 p.m. and Friday after 7:30 a.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

BOBBY DENNIS

Bobby Dennis, 52, Perryville, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 as a result of an automobile accident in Danville.

Born Oct. 4, 1951 in Louisville, he was the son of JoAnn Isham Dennis of Harrodsburg and the late Herbert Dennis Jr.

He was a salesman and a musician. He enjoyed fishing, playing the drums and was an avid U.K. sports fan.

Survivors include: one son, Robert Anthony Dennis of Danville; three brothers, Steven Wayne Dennis and Douglas Dennis, both of Harrodsburg, and Mark Dennis of Lexington; three sisters: Janet Hardin and Sandy Coffman, both of Lexington, and Pam (David) Kendrick of Duncan.

He was preceded in death by one son, Joey Dennis.

The funeral will be Friday, May 7 at 1 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Burial will be in Peters Cemetery in Mackville.

Pallbearers will be Steve Darland, Tony Hatfield, Mike Hawes, Dennis Sallee, Mick Caudell and Freddie Warner.

Honorary bearers will be Chip Hartman, Josh Vaughn, Bruce Swope and Scott Lewis.

Visitation Thursday from 5 until 9 p.m. and Friday after 7 a.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.
