Opal Settles, 88, Rogers Court, widow of Robert Settles, died Monday, June 7, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born May 12, 1916 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Robert T. and Teresa Harmon Bottoms.
She was a housewife. She was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening.
Survivors include: three sons, Michael Settles of Harrodsburg, Barnett (Joanna) Settles of Danville and Randall (Charlotte) Settles of Salvisa; four daughters, Betty Moore, Patricia (Walter) Jackson, Faye (Danny) Akins and Linda (Kenneth) Proctor, all of Harrodsburg; four brothers, Earnest, Arthur and John Bottoms, all of Washington County, and Billy Bottoms of Anderson County; sisters, Jean (Bill) Casey, of Lexington, Ida Rena Elliott and Jewell Bottoms, both of Mercer County, and Beatrice Taylor of Harrodsburg; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sons, Bobby, Terry, Glenn and Daniel Settles; one daughter, Beatrice Whiteneck; two sisters, Alma and Doris Bottoms, and two brothers, Donald and Bobby Bottoms.
The funeral will be Friday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Bobby Logue officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert Moore, Rodney Settles, Steve Settles, Larry Settles and Glenn Settles.
Visitation Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. and Friday after 7 a.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.
RALPH WAYNE
Ralph Everett Wayne, 84, Thomson-Hood Veterans Center, Wilmore, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at the center.
Born Feb. 5, 1920 in McAfee, he was the son of the late James Robert and Belle Brown Wayne.
He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Baptist church.
Survivors include: one son, Lewis J. Wayne of Thomasville, GA; four daughters, Mable Randolph of Ft. Smith, AK, Wilma Underwood of Junction City, and Geneca Robinson and Montana Underwood Cummins, both of Harrodsburg; one adopted daughter, Melissa Jones, also of Harrodsburg; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild.
The funeral will be today, Thursday, June 10 at 1 p.m. at Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Keith Willoughby and Paul Readnour officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Perryville.
Pallbearers will be Todd Randolph, Donnie and Tim Underwood, Ronnie Lyons, Scott Freeman, Tanner Cox and Jamie Wayne.
Honorary bearers will be great-grandchildren.
Visitation Wednesday from 6 until 9 p.m. and Thursday after 7:30 a.m. at the chapel.
JAMES WOODS
James L. Woods, 73, N. Moreland Place, Moreland, widower of Barbara Chambers Woods, died Friday, June 4, 2004 at his residence.
Born Oct. 28, 1930 in Cedar Creek, Lincoln County, he was the son of the late James E. and Clara B. Redeter Woods.
He was a heavy equipment operator for Danville Construction Company. He was a member of the senior citizens of Stanford and a member of Herrington Lake Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Margie (Bruce) Warner of Perryville; one son-in-law, Steve Sanders of Burgin; five grandchildren, Ellen (Giles “Jaws”) Shell of Lancaster, Stephen Warner and Mitchell Warner III, both of Perryville, and Clara and Kathy Sanders, both of Burgin, and one sister-in-law, Pauline Woods of Danville.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Bernadina Sanders; and two brothers, Earl (Josephine) and Oscar Woods, and one sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Charlie Bowden.
The funeral was held Sunday, June 6 at Stith Funeral Home in Danville with Rev. Steve VanHook officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tony Griffin, Alan Shepherd, Ronnie Polson, Benny Burchett, Bill and Chuck Bowden and Jim Disney.
IMOGENE BATTOE
Imogene "Jean" Meacham Battoe, 81, Louisville, widow of Bob B. Battoe, died Thursday, June 11, 2004 at Norton Suburban Hospital.
Born May 19, 1923 in Christian County, she was the daughter of the late Seth Ellis and Sadie Maddux Meacham.
She was a bookkeeper for Union Carbide during the World War II war effort and retired after serving for 30 years in various administrative positions at the J.B. Speed Art Museum. After retiring, she volunteered for the IRS doing tax returns for senior citizens and was employed by A.R.M. Financial Services. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Buechel Chapter #339 and a member of more than 60 years at Walnut Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert E. (Robbie) Battoe and Darryl S. (Rebecca) Battoe of Harrodsburg; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Sunday, June 13 at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home in Louisville.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 14 at First Baptist Church in Hopkinsville with burial in Riverside Cemetery.

SARAH GRITTON
Sarah Frances Gritton, 87, 265 Cummins Ferry Road, Salvisa, widow of Roy Clifton Gritton, died Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 19, 1916 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Wesley and Virginia Springate Parsons.
She was a food service employee for the Mercer County School System for many years and was a member of Salvisa Methodist Church.
Survivors include: one daughter: Mary Ann (Donald) Green of Salvisa; one sister, Doris Parsons of Salvisa; two step sisters, Ethel Hall and Wandola Perkins, both of Louisville; two granddaughters, Angelia Green Phillips and Julie Green Turner, and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Monday, June 14 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Danny Wiley and David Green officiating. Burial was in the Providence Cemetery in Harrodsburg.
Pallbearers were Louis Sea, J.C. Young, Bobby Lewis, Jimmy Sexton, Dale Cinnamon and Anthony Godbey.

MARGARET HENDREN
Margaret Elizabeth "Peggy" Hendren, 72, formerly of Nicholasville, wife of Willis D. "Bill" Hendren, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at Lexington Country Place.
Born Jan. 11, 1932 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Roy "Mex" and Mary King Phillips.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cramer and Hanover Church of Christ.
In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Dana (Steve) Hill of Sellersburg, IN; two grandchildren, Ashley and Aaron Hill, also of Sellersburg, IN, and one sister, Mary Ann Hisle of White Lake, MI.
She was preceded in death by one son, Philip Hendren, and one brother, Jimmy Phillips.
The funeral was held Friday, June 11 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington with Bro. Bennie Hill officiating. Burial was in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens in Jessamine County.

CLARA HOWELL
Clara Locke Howell, 83, Harrodsburg Health Care Manor, widow of Robert Howell Sr., died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at the center.
Born July 13, 1920 in Paducah, she was the daughter of the late Lindsay and Pearl Miller Locke.
She was a retired sales clerk after having worked for Sears in Danville for many years. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and an adult choir member.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert Howell Jr. of Nicholasville, and William Howell of Louisville; one brother, David Locke of Columbia, TN; one sister, Ruby G. Wise of Paducah, and two grandchildren, Dr. Kimberly Howell and Christine Howell.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Paul Locke.
The funeral was conducted Friday, June 11 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating, Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Curtis Bailey, Wendell Gooch, Chris Coffman, Eddie Russell, Allen Whitenack and Ron Leach.

KATIE McCRYSTAL
Katie I. McCrystal, 89, Harrodsburg Health Care Center, widow of Michael R. McCrystal, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at the center.
Born Oct. 11, 1914 in the Battle Community in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Flora Boswell Isham.
She was a retired glass inspector for Corning Glass, Inc. of Harrodsburg. She was a member of the Mercer County Senior Citizens and a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church where she was active in the Altar Society.
Survivors include: one son, Harold F. McCrystal of Somerset; one daughter, Flora Alice (Billy) Montgomery of Harrodsburg; one sister, Ethel Russell of Harrodsburg; one brother-in-law, Sylvester McCrystal of Lexington; eight grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 15 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, William "Bill" Isham, and one sister, Beulah Hendren.
The funeral will be today, Thursday, June 17 at 11 a.m. at the St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Joseph Muench and Greg Warren officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Richie McCrystal, Harold F. McCrystal Jr., Allan Pinkston, Michael Warner, Arthur B. Isham, Paul Enderle, Billy Dunaway and Tony Smith.
Visitation Wednesday after 4 p.m. with prayer service at 8:30 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.
