MARGUERITE TERHUNE
Marguerite Anne Terhune, 86, Dixie Manor, widow of Horace Terhune, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005 at the Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born March 5, 1918 in Mt. Vernon, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Katherine Savage Bauersfeld.

She served during World War II in the Army Nurse Corp. She was a nurse at Haggin Hospital for 28 years and a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church where she was a member of the Christian Workers Sunday School Class, Quilters and the June Stanley Circle.

Survivors include: two daughters, Beverly Carr and Anita (Billy) Seay, both of Harrodsburg, two sisters, Thelma Hagen of Alamito, CA and June DeLeo of Barnega, NJ; one sister-in-law, Valoise Anness of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday, Jan. 11 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Chase and Harold Best officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Keith and Kerry Anness, Mike and Rufus Carr, Tommy Coffman, Jack Pearson, Bacon Moore, John Baughman, members of the Christian Workers Sunday School Class and of the June Stanley Circle.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Harrodsburg Christian Church or to Hospice of the Bluegrass.

WILLIAM HORTON

William Edward Horton, 72, Harrodsburg, husband of Beulah Carey Horton, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born May 17, 1932 in Jessamine County, he was a son of the late Elbert Thomas and Mary Etta Johnson Horton.

He was a retired coal equipment operator for the E.W. Brown Plant, a member of the High Bridge Methodist Church, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He loved to hunt and fish and collect antiques and was an avid music fan.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, William Daniel Horton, and one daughter, Judy Ann Horton (Pete) Motto, both of Burgin; one stepson, Marty Dale (Lenore) Gray of Salvisa; two brothers, Bobby Horton of Wilmore and Ronnie Horton of Nicholasville; four sisters, Marietta Houp of Nicholasville, Minnie Jo Whitaker of High Bridge, Hallie Fox of Wilmore and Joyce Abrams of Rockcastle County, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Cheryl Sanders Southworth; three brothers, Eldon Horton, Willard Horton and Manuel Thomas Horton, and one sister, Betty Sue Yocum.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Ralph Neal, Bro. Lester Tirey and Omar E. Carey officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Clifford and Roger Houp, Richard, Leroy and Harold Horton, Keith Taylor, Omar E. Carey and Roy Sanders.

Honorary pallbearers were Harvey Duncan, John Branscum, Victor Watkins and Douglas Sanders.

MILDRED LEWIS

Mildred W. Lewis, 77, Rosewood Street, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born March 19, 1927 in Cincinnati, OH, she was the daughter of the late T.R. and Easter Patrick Watts.

She was a self-employed private duty nurse and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Patricia Phillips of Harrodsburg; three brothers, Leslie (Brenda) Watts of Walton, Luther “Billy” Watts of Harrodsburg and David (Linda) Watts of Lawrenceburg; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Maurice Ballard Watts, John Frank Watts, Allen Watts and Joe Watts, and by two sisters, Frances Murphy and Virgie Peavler.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bro. James Harley, Kenny Watts and Michael West officiating. Burial was in the New Providence Cemetery in Mercer County.

Pallbearers were Lesley Watts Jr., Kevin, Alvin Rose, Lawrence, Keith and Jeff Watts and Roger Bast.

Honorary pallbearers were William Luther Watts and Robert, David Bruce, Everett Gary, Hubert and Audrey Dale Peavler.

JOYCE LONG

Joyce Long, 56, Magnolia Street, wife of Kenneth G. Long, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 11, 1948 in Louisville, she was a daughter of the late James and Anna Lucille Clark Cummins.

She was a private duty nurse and a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Harrodsburg.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, Kevin Combs of Orlando, FL and Paul Combs Jr. of Nicholasville; two sisters, Clara Farney and Pat Sanders, and one brother, Mike Cummins, all of Lexington, and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Gumm, and one brother, James Cummins Jr.

The funeral will be today, Thursday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Don Potts officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bob White, Lance and Jimmy Farney, Shannon Foster , David Cheek and Kenny Williams.

Visitation Wednesday after 5 p.m. and Thursday prior to the service at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422.

DARRIN MADDOX

Darrin Michael Maddox, 34, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005 in Harrodsburg.

Born Sept. 15, 1970 in Harrodsburg, he was a son of James Ledmond and Mildred Lois Stopher Maddox of Harrodsburg.

He was an employee of the Kentucky Burley Warehouse and was a graduate of Mercer County High School where he was active in FFA. He collected John Deere memorabilia, was a recycling enthusiast and enjoyed landscaping.

Survivors include: three brothers, Jimmy (Missy) Maddox and Steve Maddox, both of Harrodsburg and Gary Maddox of Perryville; two sisters, Rosalie (Omer) Drury of Harrodsburg and Shirley (Mike) Hazelton of Greensburg, PA; three nieces, and 10 nephews.

The funeral was held Monday, Jan. 17 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Perry, Bro. Claude Waldridge and Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lee and Ernie Prather, Eddie and Josh Horn, Bubby Isham and Donnie Tyler.

Honorary pallbearers were Brandon, Luke, Christopher, Eli, Hagan, Dustin and Kobe Maddox, Brian and James Drury and Jeremy Hazelton.

CARRIE SPRINGATE

Carrie Springate, 90, of Talmage-Mayo Road, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at the Ephriam McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville,

Born March 9, 1914 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late George and Dessie (Norton) Springate.

She was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church, the church choir, the Powell Sunday School Class and the Young at Heart Group.

Survivors include: one sister, Georgia Powell Springate, of Harrodsburg, and several nieces, nephews, cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 17, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Bryan Burkhead. Burial will be in the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery in Mercer County.

Pallbearers will be Charles Ashford, Mack Compton, Granville Loving, J. H. Whitenack, Elton Johnson, and Charles Stratton. Honorary bearers will be Cecil Riley, Connie Darland, Don Stiglich, and members of the Powell Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 16t, from 2-5 p.m. and Monday prior to the service at chapel.

DAVID BLYTHE

David K. Blythe, 87, husband of Jeanie Blythe, Associate Dean of Engineering at University of Kentucky, died Friday, January 21, 2005 at his residence.

Born in Georgetown, he was a son of the late Ivie and Mellie Blythe.

He was member of Walnut Hill Church, the Lexington Rotary Club, The Lexington Club, American Society of Civil Engineers, University Faculty Club, Lexington Fayette County Planning Commission and served as President of the Citizens Association for Planning.

He was inducted in the College of Engineering Hall of Distinction in 1993. He served with the Army-Air Corps during W.W.II.

Other survivors include three daughters, Susan Jonas (Tom), Harrodsburg, Blythe Jamieson, Lexington and Sheila Blythe, Sarasota, FL; five grandchildren, Peter and Alex Jonas, Stuart, Jackson and Carson Morris; one great-grandson, Aiden Morris, a sister, Charlotte Dunn, AL.

Services will be held at 3:30 pm Wednesday, January 26, at Walnut Hill Church conducted by Rev. Mike Ward.

Memorial contributions to the David K. Blythe Scholarship Fund, College of Engineering, U.K., Walnut Hill Church or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

CHARLES COSBY

Charles Haldon Cosby, 74, Old Louisville Road, Salvisa, widower of Nancy Lou Gash Cosby, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005 at the V.A. Medical Center on Cooper Drive in Lexington.

Born Aug. 4, 1930 in Mercer County, he was a son of the late Claude and Martha Elizabeth Million Cosby.

He was a Korean War veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was retired as a truck driver for Florida Tile Industries in Lawrenceburg, was a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge #125, a former member of the Oleika Shrine Temple and was a member of Mayo Christian Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Martha Lynn Cosby of Salvisa; one son, Steve (Terry) Cosby of Bowling Green; one brother, Donald (Sarah) Cosby of Louisville; one sister, Ruby Spaulding of Shelbyville, and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Annelle Thompson and Hazel Hiack.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 25 at Gash Memorial Chapel with Bro. Doug Hahn officiating. Burial was in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Rusty Johnson, Paul Hughes, Reggie Robinson, Doug Brown, Joe Goodlett, and Lee Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers were Donnie Long, Johnny Carroll Spaulding, Randall Robinson, R.D. and Otis Knox and Rick Allen.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Corine Sweeney Gash Scholarship Fund, c/o Jim Gash, P.O. Box 66, Salvisa, KY 40372.

GLORIA EDWARDS
Gloria Barnette Garner Edwards, 76, Bacon Court, widow of George W. Edwards, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005 at her residence.

Born Feb. 21, 1928 in Fayette County, she was the daughter of Love Barnette Garner Abraham and A.T. Barnette and later adopted by Lorenzo “Tubby” Garner.

She attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO where she received her degree of Associate in Arts in 1948 and then graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1950. She worked as a social worker until her marriage. She was an avid reader and genealogist and became active in the Harrodsburg Historical Society. She was devoted to her family.

Survivors include: two daughters, Georgeanne Edwards of Perryville and Judy (Antonio) Zenere of Athens, GA; three sons, Donald Garner (Sheila) Edwards of Richmond, Bill Edwards of Versailles and David Edwards of Woodford County; one daughter-in-law, Lena Edwards of Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren. and several other relatives.

A gathering of family and friends was held at her home on Bacon Court Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 2 until 6 p.m.

A private graveside service was held in the Perryville Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Mai Noi Van Arsdall Library Book Fund, c/o The Harrodsburg Historical Society, 220 S. Chiles St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.
