William Henry Gentry, 81, of Blacksburg, VA, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born November 19, 1918 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Harriet Renfro Gentry. He was the widower of Katherine Poor Gentry.
He retired with over 25 years of service with Corning Glass. He served as a Captain in the National Guard Unit from Harrodsburg, Company "D" of the 192nd Tank Battalion, and was deployed to the Philippine Islands in November 1941.
He was stationed at Clark Field when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941 and in January 1942, he lead the first tank versus tank battle in US history. He survived the Bataan Death March and was decorated with two Silver Stars, a Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star, along with numerous unit commendations.
He had been an active member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War and the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor.
Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet Gentry and Douglas Y. Cobb of Savannah, GA.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William H., II and Sara Marsh Gentry of Blacksburg and James Walker and Holly Jackson Gentry of Lacoochee, FL; one sister, Nancy Lou Bannister, Paris; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard C. Gentry, Harrodsburg; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 27, at 11:00 a.m. at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

GEORGE McQUEARY
George C. McQueary, 62, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, IN.
Born in Gilpin, Casey County, February 22, 1938, he was the son of the late Aubrey C. and Wallace Gene McQueary.
He was a former resident of Mercer County and attended Rose Hill School. He was a retired mechanic, and a former employee of Mick’s Lounge in Jeffersonville, IN, and a member of Antioch Methodist Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Jeffery and Michael McQueary, both of New Albany, IN; one daughter, Patty Hines, New Albany; two; brothers, Albert McQueary, Junction City, and Clayton McQueary, Harrodsburg; five sisters, Audrey Foulk, Jeffersonville, IN, Pauline Tyler, Mercer County, Diana Heinly, Valley Station, Dorothy Schlenker, LaGrange, and Effie Hamner, Garrard County; five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dera Bottom and Opal McQueary; and two brothers, Hubert and William E. McQueary.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 15, at the Oak Street Chapel of Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes. Burial will be held at a later date.
VERNA LOGUE
Verna Logue, 84, of Baker Ridge Road, Willisburg, died Monday, May 15, 2000 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1915 in Arkansas she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Miranda Kirby Lawson.
She was a retired factory worker.
Survivors include: one son, Carl Begley, Mt. Dora, FL; two daughters, Joyce Begley, Washington, IN and Janet Galligan, Vincennes, IN. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Paul Jefferson Begley.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. John McDaniel officiating. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 12:00 Noon on Thursday until the time of service.
HAZEL BUCKLEY
Hazel Buckley, 77, of Graham Avenue, died Monday, May 15, 2000 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born October 4, 1922 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Dave and Sonora Collier Catlett.
She was a former employee of Corning of Danville and Sportleigh Hall, a homemaker and a member of the Berea Christian Church.
Survivors include: her husband, Roy Buckley, Harrodsburg; one brother, Garnett Catlett, Mercer County. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Marvin, Cecil, Charlie and Luther Catlett; two sisters, Gertie Leonard and Bernice Catlett.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Gary Allen officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Sanders, Brent Sanders, Joey McKinney, Mike Vandiver, Cary Keebortz and Stephen Keebortz.
Visitation from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 7:00 a.m. Thursday until time of service.
JEANNETTE NEAL
Jeannette (June) C. Neal, 88, of Balden Lane, Harrodsburg, died Thursday, May 18, 2000 at the James. B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born May 11, 1912, she was a native of Jessamine County. She was the widow of W. M. Neal.
She was a homemaker and attended the Shakertown Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, George William (Mattie) Neal; one daughter, Mrs. James (Sara Jane Neal) Sowards, both of Mercer County; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 20, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial was in the Wilmore Cemetery.
Pallbearers were George William Neal II, Allen Neal, Dwight David Cornell, Jeff Tribble, Russ Newton and Dwight Irvin Cornell.

CATHERINE RAGLAND
Catherine Ragland, 81, of Ross Avenue, died Friday, May 19, 2000 at Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born June 15, 1918 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Henry K. and Hester Sims Yates.
She was co-owner of pharmacies in Lexington, Nicholasville and Elizabethtown. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.
Survivors include: one son, Mickey Ragland, Glendale; one daughter, Joy Nasados, Colorado Springs, CO; one sister, Elizabeth James, Harrodsburg; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 23, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Hartman officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bernice Hale, Elijah B. Yates, Don Billy Yates, Don Fisher, Michael Fisher, Jimmy Dean, Calvin Reed and Michael Sanders.
MATTIE DERINGER
Mattie Settles Deringer, 91, of 511 Derringer Road, died Monday, May 22, 2000 at the Charleston Health Care Center in Danville.
Born March 18, 1909, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Florence Keeling Settles. She was the widow of Walter Benton Deringer.
She was a homemaker, an avid quilter and a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Marvin and Reuben Deringer, both of Harrodsburg; four daughters, Juanita Bottom, Washington County, Mary Lee Wilkerson and Shirley Logue, both of Harrodsburg, and Ella Rose Bottoms of Mackville; one sister-in-law, Lillie Settles of Shreveport, LA; 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Daryl and Sheryl Deringer; two brothers, Oliver and Clifton Settles; two sisters, Margie Mann and Pearl Logue Carrier; three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 24, at the Deep Creek Baptist Church with Bro. Hilary Claypool and Bro. Everett Priddy officiating. Burial was in the Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joedy Lee Bottom, Wayne Deringer, Donnie Benton Bottoms, Howard Logue Jr., Mark Wilkerson and Robert Deringer.

Loraine Foster Heindl, 84, of 2958 Old Douglas Mill Road, Hodges, SC, died May 14, 2000 at her residence.
Born in Harrodsburg, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Era Gladys Chilton Foster . She was the widow of Ralph Robert Heindl.
She was an army veteran and retired registered nurse.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert Heindl, Greenwood, SC, Kenneth Heindl, Kapolei, HI; one daughter, Barbara Heindl, Hodges, SC; a sister, Sara Maxine Foster Anness, Harrodsburg; a brother, Arthur Caldwell Foster , Richmond; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, May 17, in Long Cane Cemetery.

BEULAH SCHOOLING
Mrs. Beulah McCristal Schooling, age 91, formerly of 823 North College Street, died Monday, May 22, at 263 Saunders Avenue, Louisville.
Born October 15, 1908 in Mercer County she was the daughter of the late Henry and Nora Logue McCristal. She was the widow of Gordon Schooling, Sr.
She was a retired Corning Glass Works employee and a member of the Bethel #1 Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: one son, Gordon Hunter Schooling, Jr., Danville; two daughters, Ruth Doris Tripp, Prentiss, MS; Judy Schooling, Louisville; one sister, Aileen Black, Harrodsburg; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Garnett McCristal and two sisters, Hattie Patterson and Mirtie Smith.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 25, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. James Byrd officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jeff, Jon and Adam Schooling, John White, Phillip Bratcher and Alan Hendren.

JOHN BAKER
John Harley Baker, 93, formerly of 513 N. Main Street, died Monday, May 22, 2000 at the Thomas Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.
Born September 30, 1906 in Moreland, he was the son of the late George Christopher and Allie Haley Baker. He was the widower of Aline Tatum Baker.
He worked as a plumber for Goodlett & Hayslett and was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.
He was an army veteran, having served 11 years. He served under George Patton and was part of a special detail dispatched to Alkatraz Island to oversee the imprisonment of Al Capone.
Survivors include: one son, Michael Dale (Betty) Bugg, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Jennifer Joan (Jimmy) Long, Harrodsburg; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Ocie Baker; two sisters, Gertrude Merriman and Jennie Zimmerman.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 24, at the Ransdell Funeral chapel with Mark Girard officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery with military rites.
Pallbearers were Kevin Bugg, Todd Bugg, Don Hayslett, Harold Hill, Mike Hill, Vernon Tatum and Kevin Tyler. Honorary bearers were Donnie and Gil Hayslett.
ROWENA NORTON
Rowena Bernice Norton, 72, of 555 Mooreland Avenue, died Friday, May 19, 2000 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born June 9, 1927 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Elijah Powell and Treva Lee Woods Yates.
She worked as a homemaker and had been an employee of Corning Glass. She was a member of the Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, Elwood Norton, Harrodsburg; three sons, Dennis (Glenna) Norton, Carlisle, Glenn (Sheilah) Norton, Harrodsburg, Jerry Elwood (Darlene) Norton, Shelbyville; three brothers, Elijah B. Yates, Lexington, Cleo Yates, Jackson, MI, Don Billy Yates, Harrodsburg; two sisters, Neva Wallace, Georgetown and Marlene VanArsdall, Harrodsburg; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 22, at the Ransdell Funeral chapel with Terry Reffett officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery.
