James L. Campbell, 86, of 1345 Shakertown Road, Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born October 31, 1913 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James and Hallie Curd Campbell. He was the widower of Blanche Duncan Campbell.
He was a farmer, a lifetime member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church, a former member of the Burgin School Board, a charter member of the Mercer County Farm Bureau and served as a Corporate Director for Southern States Cooperative from 1962 to 1979. He was chairman from 1974 until 1977 and the vice chair from 1970 until 1973.
Survivors include: one son, Earl L. (Janice) Campbell, Boyle county; one daughter, Mrs. Jeff (Mary Elizabeth "Pat") Loane, MO; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and two half-sisters.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 26, at the Shawnee Run Baptist Church with Bro. Lester Tirey and Jerry Lester officiating. Burial will be in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jeff, Marty and Daniel Loane, Jim and Clay Campbell, brother-in-laws, Harvey and Bill Duncan and friend, George Wilcher. Honorary bearers will be adult men’s Sunday School Class at Shawnee Run Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home and at 11:00 a.m. Friday until time of the service Friday at Shawnee Run Baptist Church.
JOE HUMBER
Joe Bush Humber, 73, 324 Woodsland Drive, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born in Danville October 15, 1926, he was the son of the late Forest and Dorothy Duncan Hicks Humber.
He was the former owner of Humber Heating and Air Conditioning, and an army veteran of World War II.
He attended the Harrodsburg Christian Church and the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Barbara Jean Asher Humber, Harrodsburg; two sons, Danny William Humber, Mercer County, and Timothy Joe Humber, Versailles; one daughter, Toni Jean Humber Turpin, Versailles; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 26, at the McClellan Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Girard and Rev. David Hartman officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Wayne Peavler, Mike Barnard, Sid Hollar, Paul Shirley, David Quinn and John Markel.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church.
HERBERT ASHTON
Herbert Ashton, 71, of 550 Pinkston Court, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born January 11, 1929 in Holly Hill, McCreary County, he was the son of the late Francis and Mary Watts Ashton.
He was a retired mold room technician for Corning Glass of Harrodsburg and a member of the Magnolia Street Christian Church and AARP.
He was a member of American Legion Post #52 and the VFW and was an army veteran of the Korean conflict.
Survivors include: his wife, Rita Lane Ashton, Harrodsburg; two sons, Herbie (Teresa) Ashton, Harrodsburg and David Ashton, Harrodsburg; one step-son, Eddie Burton, and a step daughter, Lee Ann Butler, both of Harrodsburg; three sisters, Dessie Arns and Lura Madaris, both of Cincinnati, OH and Maxine Pinkston, Harrodsburg; two grandchildren, four step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Ashton.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 26, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Terry Cooper, Glenn Daugherty and Mike Hreha officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery with military rites.
Pallbearers were Tommy Darland, Timmy Darland, Steve Pinkston, John Arns, Danny Sharon and Andy Ashton. Honorary bearers were Don Pinkston, John "Scooter" Huffman, Howard Stephens, Earl Pinkston, Joe Hayslett, Larry Pinkston, Forest Devine, Chris Clark, Keith Pinkston and Shane Powell.

VERTNA LAY
Vertna Sanford Lay, widow of Elliott W. Lay, died Monday, May 22, 2000 in DeKalb, IL.
She was a native of Mercer County.
Surviors include one son, George (Manata) Lay; two sisters, Neoma Hatchett, Austell, GA, Alma Reynolds, Mercer County; five grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons and one sister, Nannie Peavler of Mercer County.
Burial was in DeKalb, IL.
CLARA BOGAN
Clara Jean Hagan Bogan, 70, wife of William Neill Bogan Jr., Harrodsburg, died at her home May 27, 2000.
Born December 15, 1929 in Johnson City, TN, she was the daughter of the late James Roy and Kittye Alderson Hagan.
She spent her early years in Fort Mitchell and Fort Thomas, graduating in 1947 from Highlands High School. She received her BA degree from Georgetown College in 1950 where she was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority.
She was a member of the Lexington Avenue Baptist Church, Danville, The St. Asaph Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Gathering Artists of Danville, and the Lakeview Homemakers.
Survivors include: two daughters, Linda Smith (Daniel H.) Silvestri, Lexington, and Dr. Pat Sharab (Dr. Mickey Ziegler) Bogan, San Rafael, CA; one son, William Neill (Irene Ledwith) Bogan III, Hastings on Hudson, NY; two sisters, Kathleen Hagan Feuss, Cincinanti, OH, and Rebecca Elizabeth Hagan Fields, Nashville, TN; six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Graham Anderson Smith.
A memorial service was held Monday, May 29, at the Lexington Avenue Baptist Church, Danville, with Dr. Thomas Valentine, Dr. Bennett Hall and Dr. Wilmer C. Fields, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Lexington Avenue Baptist Church.

JEAN COLE
Jean Brown Cole, 75, of 398 VanArsdall Drive, died Thursday, May 25, 2000 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born in Wilson, NC, June 29, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Carl B. and Minnie Whitaker Brown.
She was a former Red Cross nurse during World War II, and a former postal employee of Wilmington, NC. She was a former member of the Harrodsburg Womans Club, Beulah Clay Circle, and a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist church. She was a housewife.
Survivors include: her husband, Donald Lee Cole, Harrodsburg; three daughters, Donna Jean Keys, Myrtle Beach, SC, Marguerite K. Cole and Nancy Lee (Eddie) Corbett, both of Wilmington, NC; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Carl B. Brown, Wilmington, NC; six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl B. Brown, Jr.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 28, at the McClellan Funeral Home by Rev. Mark Girard and Dr. David Ross. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were C. L. Riley, Bob Ballard, Jack Springate, Edsel Brown, Keith Batterton, and Chuck Dedman. Honorary bearers were Bill Gravely, Gus Clarke, Charles Hurst, Dr. James M. Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, Post #6935, VFW and DAV Post #54 conducted Memorial Day Services at all Mercer County cemeteries, Sunday morning, May 28, and at Spring Hill Cemetery in the afternoon.
Those attending were Dennis Shewmaker, Roy Freeman, Louis Ransdell, Gene Conley, James Carey, Harold Ackerman, Marion Mershon, Tommy Lane, Howard H. Howells, Gary Winfield, Tommy Denny, Lucian Landers, Richard Shewmaker, David Bruner, J. L. Devine, James Tewmey, Charles Crews, Curtis Selby and Joe Harlow.
Serving as buglers were Tim Daley, Will Beauchamp and Erica Ashford.
RICHARD HALL
Richard Allen Hall, 45, Lexington, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at the University of Kentucky Hospital.
A native of Lexington, he was a son of the late Everett and Julia Mae Snelling Hall.
He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a veteran of the U. S. Army.
Survivors include: one daughter, Lisa Megan Hall, Harrodsburg; two brothers, Everett Ray (Judy) Hall, Niceville, FL, James L. (Beth) Hall, Smyrna, TN; four sisters, Imogene Hall and Thelma Sue (Johnny) Cooper, both of Nicholasville, Virginia (James) Wilson, Lexington, Martha K. (Wesley) Downing, Springfield; a special friend, Margaret Hall.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, May 31, at Blue Grass Memorial Gardens by Rev. Danny Broce.

CARLTON DRURY
Carlton Levon Drury, 74, of 1638 Danville Road, died Friday, June 2, 2000 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.
Born January 30, 1926 in Willisburg, he was the son of the late Carl and Nita Mae Drury.
He owned and operated Drury's Saddlery, where he made and shipped custom show horse tack all over the world. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Kennon Dury, Harrodsburg; three daughters, Suzanne Grable, Lexington, Judy Renfrow, Harrodsburg, and Paulette Drury, Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 5, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lewis Walter officiating. Burial was in the Grapevine Cemetery with Military Rites.
Pallbearers were Jerry Mobley, Travis Adkinson, David Adkinson, Don Smith, David Drury and Wes Huffman. Honorary bearers were Corde Grable, Justin Grable, Bill Grable, Eddie Gustafson, William Bottom, Buford Taylor and Larry Hinshaw.

Bess Allen McMurry, 103, widow of T. E. McMurry, died Saturday, June 3, 2000 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility.
Born May 9, 1897 in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late William T. and Mary Elizabeth Yowell Allen.
She was a member of Joseph Chapel Methodist Church and a housewife.
Survivors include: one nephew, Donald L. Cole, Harrodsburg; one great nephew, Stanley Jordon Jr., Hamilton, OH.
Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, June 6, at Spring Hill Cemetery by Rev. Mark Girard.
Memorials are suggested to the Haggin Memorial Hospital.
McClellan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
