Currens Dies Tuesday At Age 56
“To be trustworthy, to be honest, looking them in the eye and don’t lead them astray.”
These are the words William Leonard Currens wrote in the last weeks of his life as to how he wants his neighbors to remember him.
Currens, 56, died on Tuesday and many already mourn the loss of a friend of the entire community.
Currens, who resided at 808 McCouns Ferry Road, was known throughout Northern Mercer County, especially for his volunteer work as well and his care and compassion for friends, family and strangers.
Currens was a volunteer wit the Salvisa fire Department since 1969 and the fire chief since 1992. He also had worked at Currens Garage, located on the corner in downtown Salvisa, since he was a boy.
“He was what you call a pillar of the community,” said Harrodsburg Fire Chief Marshall Hockersmith, who said he practically grew up with Currents, having lived in the same neighborhood as children and adults.
“He and his dad have run that garage in Salvisa for as long as I can remember,” added Hockersmith.
But, when a fire call came in, Hockersmith said Currens stopped what he was doing, closed the doors and responded. “I never heard him complain. It was one of the things he did for the love of doing and for the people on that end of the county,” he said.
Hockersmith said Currens will be missed as both an individual and as a business person.
Along with his business and volunteer work with the fire department, Currens was a member of the Claylick United Methodist Church, where he often served on boards and committees, and he was a former member of the Salvisa Ruritan Club. He also assisted with elections for many years, staying at the courthouse and on standby to assist any machines that might break down during the course of that day’s election.
Longtime friend Howard Fallis said Currens felt a great duty to serve his community and that is what he did.
Drafted during the Vietnam era, Currens was stationed in Germany. When he returned to Harrodsburg, he became partners with his dad at the garage. Fallis said Currens had been working with his dad since he was 12 or 13 years old. He would go to the garage after school and on Saturday.
Currents attended Salvisa Elementary School and graduated from Mercer County High School. He also attended a trade school in Louisville.
A business person in a small community is known by everybody. And, everybody knew Currens, said Fallis. “He was a great listener. He listened to complaints or stories and only gave advice when asked.”
Currens became a mainstay in the community and was respected as a person with character, said Fallis.
Fallis added that Currens was always helping others and not just by responding to fire calls. Fallis said Currens would drop whatever he was doing to assist a friend, neighbor or stranger. He said he would leave his job after working from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and, without going home for supper, would stop at someone’s house to help them with a chore that needed to be done. He also was considerate, always asking about one’s family and loved ones, added Fallis.
Currens also visited people who might need a lift or just to chick on them when they were sick. He was a pallbearer to many, said Fallis.
“He felt a great duty to God,” he added.
Fallis said Currens was the type of man who would help in anyway, literally giving the shirt off his back if it was needed.
Even though his presence was felt throughout the community, Fallis described him as a “quiet” man who did not want to impose on anyone, often standing to the side until needed.
“We depended on him for more than the mechanical things we needed done, but also as a shoulder to lean on. He was always willing to do (for others). He loved his family.”
Fallis said Currens loved time spent with his grandchildren.
We are going to miss him terribly, not only as a foundation of the community, but also as a loved one and friend.”
Funeral services for Currens will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Salvisa Baptist Church.
Currens is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Curtis Currens; three children, and several grandchildren.
