JAMES SALLEE
James Arthur Sallee, 97, Louisville, formerly of Harrodsburg, widower of Augusta Lyons Sallee, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at Hillcreek Manor in Louisville.

Born July 23, 1907 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James Oliver and Elizabeth Harlow Sallee.

He was a retired farmer, and he was the oldest charter member of Shakertown Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. He was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include: two sons, John H. (Janice) Sallee and James W. (Shirley) Sallee, and three daughters, Mary DeVary, Margaret (Ragan) Watts and Betty (Bob) Buckley, all of Louisville; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was conducted Friday, July 1, 2005 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Gilbert Robinson and David Collier officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John DeVary III, Mike, Tim and Doug Sallee, Calvin Watts, Rick and Robert Joe Buckley and Teresa Heaphey.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Shakertown Baptist Church and Lonnie Jenkins.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Louisville, 532 Ephraim McDowell Drive, Louisville, KY 40205.

LUCILLE SANDERS

Lucille Gritton Sanders, 84, of Louisville, died Sunday July 3, 2005 at Norton Suburban Hospital. She was the widow of Ret. Col. Marshall Andrew Sanders.

Born in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late William M. and Etha Sanford Gritton. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother. She was a member of Mt. Hebron Methodist Church in Mercer County and an associate of St. Matthew Baptist Church in Louisville.

Survivors include: a daughter, Joyce Lynn Sanders; sister-in-law, Maxine Sanders Schneider, and several nieces and nephews, including William Lyen, Dr. Boyd Nash (Carla) Sanders, Jeannie G. (Ted) Michalik, William H. (Cheri) Schneider Jr., Robert A. Schneider, Paula S. (Garry) Schenk, Lisa (John) Gritton Klingenfus, formerly of Harrodsburg, and Billy Mac Gritton of Harrodsburg.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Matthews Baptist Church, 3515 Grandview Ave., with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Mt. Hebron Methodist Church or St. Matthews Baptist Church.

STEVEN SEARS

Steven Lee Sears, 10, of Stanford, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.

Born April 21, 1995, in Boyle County, he was the son of Frances Smith Pendygraft of Somerset and Steven Dawson Sears of Stanford. He was a member of Moreland First Baptist Church.

Other survivors include two sisters, Kayla Smith of Somerset and Nicole Trumble of Hamilton, Ohio; and his paternal grandparents, Rosa Catlett of Harrodsburg and Dawson Sears of Danville.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home by the Rev. Gary Douglas. Burial will be in Moreland Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Friday.

EDWIN SPRINGATE
Edwin Powell “Cotton” Springate, 81, widower of Vernett Thompson Springate, died Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington.

He was born March 22, 1924 in Mercer County.

He was a WWII Army veteran, and he was a member of Lawrenceburg First Baptist Church. He retired from Edwards Sausage Company after 30 years of service.

Survivors include: one son, George (Debbie) Springate of Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Betty Morris of Salvisa and Geraldine “Gerri” Hawthorne, also of Lawrenceburg; one brother, Morris (Beulah) Springate of Texas; one sister-in-law, Onita (Lawrence) Sanford of Lawrenceburg; two grandchildren, and numerous other relatives.

The funeral was held Friday, July 1 at Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg with Bro. Elwood Norton and Vernell Devine officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim Link, Stanley Petrey, Ryan Springate, Jesse and Lawrence Sanford and Steve Childers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lawrenceburg First Baptist Church, 111 N. Main St. in Lawrenceburg.

MARY YATES
Mary Elizabeth Dennis Yates, 85, widow of Clois R. “Bud” Yates, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born, Jan. 7, 1920 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Brown and Viola Hurst Dennis.

She retired from Owens-Corning in Illinois after 42 years, was a member of Harrodsburg Christian Church, Homemaker’s Club, Harrodsburg Christian Church Quilters and was a Champion Bowler in her younger days.

Survivors include: one brother: Carlos (Ruby) Dennis of Lexington; one sister: Beatrice Dennis Walters of Burgin; one brother-in-law, Joseph W. Brummett of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Dennis Brummett, and one brother-in-law, Clyde Walters.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Chase officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews: Mark Dennis, Mike Dennis, Tim Dennis, Tom Ballard, Bob Ballard and Jim Walters.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 7 a.m. Thursday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

MINNIE YATES
Minnie Rea Woods Yates, 72, of New Castle, died Friday, July 1, 2005 at Jewish Hospital Shelbyville. She was the widow of Joseph S. Yates, Jr.

Born in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Curry Woods Sr. and Minnie Alice Wilder.

She was a homemaker and an active member of New Castle United Methodist Church, the Rebekah Lodge, Eastern Star and United Methodist Women.

Survivors include: two children, Joseph S. (Mary Jane Moffatt) Yates Jr. of New Castle and Alice Catherine (Todd) Lemley of Nonesuch; a brother, Jack Woods; a sister, Mrs. W. A. (Sarah Frances) Bottom; a sister-in-law, Emeline Woods, all of Harrodsburg, and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis C. Woods Jr.

The funeral was 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6 at New Castle United Methodist Church. The Rev. Garry Polston officiated and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Elizabeth Blair Bottom, Sarah Woods Schooler, Marsha Louise Noel, Lewis Curry Woods III, Mark D. Noel, Mary Samuel Woods, William Chadwick Noel, Roberta Graham Woods, Al Schooler and George A. Yates.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to New Castle United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 194, New Castle, KY 40050 or to the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate KY Region, 333 Guthrie Street; Suite 207, Louisville, KY 40202.

MILITARY RITES
Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, Post #6935, V.F.W. & D.A.V. Post #54 conducted Military Rites for William Leonard Currens at New Providence Cemetary on July 2, 2005.

Those attending were: Tom Rappelye, Lucian Landers, Kris Stines, Howard H. Howells II, Earl Sherrow, Floyd Shirley, Tom Denny, Joe Harlow, Curtis Sherrow and Howard H. Howells, Sr.

The bugler was Jerry Freeman. Also participating were Fort Knox Army representatives SFC Victor S.T.L. and SSG David Moreland.

RUBY BAKER

Ruby Jones Baker, 83, Lancaster, died Friday, July 8, 2005 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born May 24, 1922 in Rockcastle County, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Theodora Combs Green, and she was the widow of William Carl Baker.

She was a member of Mitchellsburg United Methodist Church and attended Bryantsville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: three sons, Ted Baker of Danville, William C. Baker Jr. of Hamilton, OH and Ken Baker of Hindman; one daughter, Phyllis Baker Swope of Lancaster; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several relatives in Mercer County.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Morris Clifton Baker and Council “Skip” Baker.

The funeral was held Sunday, July 10 at Stith Funeral Home in Danville. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Perryville.

RONALD CAREY
Ronald E. Carey, 61, Harrodsburg, and formerly of Concord, NC, husband of Shirley Alcorn Carey, died Sunday, July 10, 2005 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 26, 1944 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late William Andy and Margaret Carey.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, and he was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #777 F & AM, the American Legion, VFW and DAV. He was a member of Shawnee Run Baptist Church, he was a retired IBM employee, and he was a former employee of NASCAR team Petty Enterprises.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Ronald Jeffery Carey of Burgin; two step-sons, Keith Todd (Trisha) Jackson of Lancaster and CW2 Kevin Lynn (Leigh) Jackson of Germany; one sister, Georgie Ann (Granville) Sherrow of Harrodsburg; one brother, Kenneth A. (Judy) Carey, also of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Ralph Neal officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be G. T. Shannon, Alex Jarman, Ed Sweasy, Steward Horne, Harold Johnson, Scott Hulette, Terry Bradford and Luther Coffey.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 until 9 p.m. and Thursday after 7 a.m. at the funeral home.

Masonic Rites will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

JESSIE CUMMINS
Jessie Wilson Cummins, 82, widow of Dudley Cummins, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 22, 1922 in Monterey, TN, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Shell and Willa Hamilton Wilson.

She was a family practice nurse (rpn) for Dr. Bacon Moore. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Church of Christ.

Survivors include: one daughter, Carole Anne (Jack) Freeman of Harrodsburg; one brother, William Ellis Wilson of Loogootee, IN; two grandsons, Mark Freeman and Chris (Carmen) Freeman; one granddaughter, Michele (Todd) Thompson, and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Lee Wilson.

The funeral will be today, Thursday, July 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Gary Bagwell and Todd Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy, Steve, Donnie and Carl Cummins, Roc Moore, Mike Ellis and Bo Wilson.

Visitation Wednesday from 5 until 9 p.m. and Thursday after 7:30 a.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Harrodsburg Church Of Christ Building Fund, 232 South College St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

ROBERT EDISON SR.

Robert C. Edison Sr., 2486 Plumtree Ct., Lexington, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005.

He was born in Mercer County and was the son of the late Holly and Lydia Young Edison.

He had lived in Cincinnati, OH where he was employed by the Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Robert C. (Jacqueline) Edison Jr. of Lexington and Thomas (Joyce) Edison of West Palm Beach, FL; two brothers, James Edison of Cynthiana and Claude Edison of Mebane, NC; one sister, Mattie Frances Gaston of Phoenix, AZ; one aunt, Ina Whitted, also of Mebane; grandchildren and numerous other relatives, and special friend, Merlene Faulk of Warner Robbins, GA.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Luvenia Crawford, Gertrude Jones and Nancy Francis Patton.

The funeral was held Sunday, July 10 at New Birth Church in Lexington. Burial was at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by O. L. Hughes and Sons Mortuary in Lexington.

DEBRA HARTLEY
Debra Fay Hartley, 47, 373 New Dixville Rd., died Sunday, July 10, 2005 at the Hospice Center in Lexington.

Survivors include: one daughter, Angela Hartley, three sons, James Atwood Cross, Robert Hartley and Cecil Morris, all of Versailles; two sisters, Zella Lyons of Harrodsburg and Pat Hurt of Versailles, and two brothers, Bobby Kearns and Ernest Morris, both of Harrodsburg.

The funeral will be today, Thursday, July 14 at 1 p.m. at Betts and West Funeral Home in Nicholasville. Burial will be in Bluegrass Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation Wednesday from 4 until 9 p.m. and Thursday after 9 a.m.

HILRY HATCHETT

Hilry Paul Hatchett, 80, of Mackville Road, Springfield, died Thursday, July 7, 2005 at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon.

Born Jan. 3, 1925, in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Eddie Berry and Nettie Hoskins Hatchett.

He was an elder of Willisburg Christian Church where he also was a Sunday School teacher and treasurer. He was a former deputy sheriff in Washington County and was a farmer.

Survivors include: his wife, Elaine Shewmaker Hatchett; one son, Marty Hatchett, Mackville; one brother, Oliver "Bob" Hatchett, Willisburg; two sisters, Lucille Perry and Frances Hatchett, both of Lawrenceburg; two half-brothers, Donnie and Willis Hatchett, both of Lawrenceburg; and two grandchildren.

Services will be 2:30 Sunday, July 10, at Cary & Son Funeral Home by Joe Paul Hatchett and Greg Bowen. Burial will be in Peter Cemetery at Mackville.

Memorials may go to The Mackville Community Center.

WILLIAM JACKSON
William Mack Jackson, M.D., 67, Danville, husband of Gerry Lowrey Jackson, died Saturday, July 9, 2005 at his home.

Born Sept. 26, 1937 in Louisville, he was a son of the late Chrisman Spears Jackson, M.D. and Gladys Hendren Jackson.

He was an orthopedic surgeon in Danville and was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Hagan Jackson of Danville and Tate Jackson of Louisville; one daughter, Lowrey Jackson, also of Danville; three brothers, Dr. Johnny Jackson of Ft. Worth, TX and Dr. Chris Jackson and Dr. Elmer Jackson, both of Danville, and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Mack Jackson Jr.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Danville. Burial was in the Harlan Bruce Cemetery in Danville.

Pallbearers were Hagan, Tate, Lowrey, Chris, Elmer and Johnny Jackson and Red Neilson.

Honorary pallbearers were the male chorus of First Baptist Church of Danville and the Shared Silence group.

Arrangements were handled by Spurlin Funeral Home of Stanford.

EARL MOLEN

Earl H. "Johnny" Molen, 75, of Lancaster, died Friday, July 8, 2005,

Born January 1, 1930, in Wayne County, he was the son of Maggie Lee Lovell Molen and the late Herstel Tate Molen.

He was a retired certified public accountant and a member of United Centenary Methodist Church in Danville. He was a member of Gideon International and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Additional survivors include: his wife, Jo Ann Molen; two daughters, Connie Wiles, Berea and Jonda St. John, Danville; one son, Scott Molen, Nashville; one step-son, Charles Bacon, Lexington; two step-daughters, Rebecca Daly and Priscilla Flynn, both of Lancaster; one brother, Ray Molen, Harrodsburg; two sisters, Marilyn Ann Zebell, Somerset and Margaret York, Monticello; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, July 11, at Spurlin Funeral Home, Lancaster, by the Rev. Quintin Schulpz, with military rites by American Legion Caswell Saufley Post #18. Burial will be in Camp Nelson Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Daly, Jimbo Flynn, John Molen, Samuel Molen, Ray Molen and Jameson Flynn.

Honorary pallbearers are Clarence Crowell, Harold Martin, Chuck Dulmage, Bob Gorley and the men of the Pruitt Sunday School Class of United Centenary Methodist Church of Danville.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday.

Memorials may go to the Pruitt Sunday School Class of United Centenary Methodist Church of Danville.

MARGIE SAYLOR
Margie L. Saylor, 79, Kettering, OH, wife of Aubrey Saylor, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 in Ohio.

Born July 6, 1926 in Mercer County, she was a daughter of the late Winfield and Mary Leonard Russell.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kettering. She was a former employee of Sunshine Biscuit and of Kettering Memorial Hospital.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one brother, Leo Russell of Akron, OH, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judy Carolyn Pennington; two brothers, Woodrow and Romie Russell, and three sisters, Lucille Bugg, Caltha B. Payton and Evalene Pennington.

The funeral will be Friday, July 15 at 1 p.m. at Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church with Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial will be in the Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Vinyard, Barry Dean, David Russell, Marshall Cochran, Jason Gaddis and Scott Payton.

Visitation Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Tobias Funeral Home ­ Belmont Chapel in Dayton, OH and Friday after 11 a.m. at the church.

Local arrangements are being handled by Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

LILLIE SETTLES
Lillie Pearl Settles, 89, Shreveport, LA, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005 after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1915 in Washington County, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Dora Pruitt Sallee.

Survivors include: one daughter, Linda Settles Patterson of Shreveport; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Peggy Ann Nugent and Marilyn Settles; one son, Randall Settles, and one sister, Gladys Curry.

The funeral was held Saturday, July 9 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial was in the Cornishville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Terry and Gary Grider, Todd and Nicholas Collier and Marvin and Reuben Deringer.

MARY STEPHENSON
Mary Kilpatrick Stephenson, 91, 120 Sycamore Ct., widow of Elmer Coy Stephenson, died Saturday, July 9, 2005 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 9, 1914 in Hookerton, NC, she was the daughter of the late Luther Sanders and Virginia Brantley Kilpatrick.

She and her husband owned and operated the Harrodsburg Dairy for many years. The company was the first milk pasteurizing plant in the region and supplied hospitals, schools, grocery stores and homes with pasteurized milk. After selling the company to Southern Belle, they owned and operated the Flavor Freeze drive-in restaurant in Harrodsburg. She was a member of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women and the Women’s Circle.

Survivors include: Son-in-law, John “Skeeter” Reed of Harrodsburg; two granddaughters, Kathy Reed (Richard Dartt, M.D.) Dartt of Harrodsburg and Jeanne Reed (Stephen Pinkston, M.D.) Pinkston; two grandsons, Franklin (Robin) Reed and Stephen (Missy Tatum) Reed, formerly of Harrodsburg; two nieces; three nephews; 10 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by one daughter; Phyllis S. Reed.

Graveside services were held Monday, July 11 at Spring Hill Cemetery with Dr. Joe Tarry officiating. Stephen Reed delivered the eulogy.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Harrodsburg Presbyterian Foundation.
