Effie Simpson, 81, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born May 22, 1925 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Ida Mae Breeding and was the widow of Marshall Simpson Jr.
She had worked as a housekeeper for many families and was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. She enjoyed yard sales, gardening, canning and cooking.
Survivors include: three sons, Ronnie Simpson, Jeff (Tammy) Simpson and Stevie Simpson, all of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Betty (Jack) Murphy and Charlotte (Larry) Lane, both of Harrodsburg, and Joyce Hill of Danville; three brothers, Elwood (Elizabeth) Breeding and Eugene (Ruby) Breeding, both of Springfield, and Homer (Dorthy) Breeding of Louisville; two sisters: Juanita McMichael of Springfield and Beulah Coulter of Bardstown; 25 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Junior Simpson and Billy Simpson; one brother, Cecil Breeding, and two sisters, Ella Frances Breeding and Lorene Tingle Breeding.
Services were held Saturday, July 15 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bros. Jack Geurin and Brian Burkhead officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry Bugg, Jodie Simpson, Rickey Simpson, David Baker, Jared Baker and Billy Hollar.

RONALD TATUM
Ronald K. Tatum, 22, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006 in Harrodsburg.
Born May 19, 1984 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Cinnamon “Cindy” Joyce Harmon Tatum of Harrodsburg and the late Robert Tatum.
He was a brick mason and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, survivors include: three half-brothers, Koty, Jamie and Robbie Tatum of Harrodsburg; one half-sister, Bobbi Steinhauer of Danville; paternal grandmother, Patsy Shobel of Danville, and maternal grandmother, Peggy Burkhead of Harrodsburg.
Graveside services were held Saturday, July 15 at Spring Hill Cemetery.
Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
MARTHA VICKREY
Martha Rae Pennington Vickrey, 61, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, OH.
Born January 26, 1945, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Stanley Pennington Sr. and Ida Mae Stewart Pennington.
She was a homemaker and member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Chester Vickrey; one daughter, Paulette Vickrey of West Milton, OH; one son, Kyle Vickrey of West Milton; two sisters, Jesse Dean, Stanford and Shelby Bertram, London; three brothers, Verdis Pennington, Lexington, Stanley Pennington Jr., Harrodsburg and Ronald Pennington, Burgin; and three grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at Grace Baptist Church in Ludlow Falls, OH.
Memorials may go to the Leukemia, Lymphoma Society.
HAROLD WARREN
Harold Lloyd Warren, 79, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
Born Nov. 20, 1926 in Harlan County, he was the son of the late John and Grace Rogers Warren and was the husband of Leona Green Warren.
He was a retired meat cutter having most recently worked at C&T Food Market. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: three daughters, Debbie (John) Combs and Sandy (Chad) Shepherd, both of Clay City, and D.J. (Greg) Pelster of Lexington; three sons, Dennis (Christina) Warren and Mike (Ruth) Warren, both of Richmond, and Barry Warren of Harrodsburg; three sisters, Vivian Walden and Gaylene Warren, both of Covington, and Vera Horn of Erlanger; one brother, James Warren of Erlanger; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, July 18 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. James Harley officiating. Burial with military honors was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chad Shepherd, Greg Pelster, John Combs, Nathan Combs, Colby Warren, Barry Warren, Donald Green and Sac Humes.
Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Martha, Terry Currens, Collene Horn, Kent Lunsford, Bill Hall, Durand Lay and Sonny Driskell.

EDWIN BALLINGER
Edwin Paul Ballinger, 83, widower of Kathryn Mae Reynolds Ballinger, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at Kenton Healthcare.
Born in Cynthiana, he was a son of the late Earl and Sallie Platt Ballinger.
He was a 1942 graduate of Henry Clay High School and a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, 65th Signal Battalion where he received the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Campaign Medal and the American Campaign Medal. He was a retired supervisor from GTE and a member of First Christian Church where he served on the Board of Directors. He was also an honorary deputy sheriff in Fayette County.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula (James) Todd, Nicholasville; a granddaughter, Tara (Ross) Cairns, Harrodsburg; two great grandsons, Creed and Croix Cairns; a brother, Earl (Marian) Ballinger, Lexington; a sister, Marty Ballinger, Louisville; a nephew, Dan Reynolds, Lexington; and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m., Saturday, July 22, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road by Minister Ronnie Hupp with burial to follow in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Walt Barbour, Ken Kelley, Dan Reynolds, Ross Cairns, Tommy Alcorn, Barry Newcombe, and James Todd. Honorary bearer will be Earl Ballinger.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday.

ERNESTINE BENNETT
Ernestine Fisher Bennett, 76, of North College Street, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 7, 1929 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Sam Walker and Sarah Frances Talbert Walker and was the widow of Franklin Fisher and Vernon Bennett.
She was a graduate of West Side High School and a retired seamstress for the Mercer Dress Corporation. She was a member of the Centennial Baptist Church where she sang in the Senior Choir, was church clerk and was the former superintendent of the Sunday school.
Survivors include: four step-sons, Vernon Bennett Jr. James Bennett, Vincent Bennett and Antonio Bennett, all of Cincinnati, OH; two step-daughters, Antoinette Bennett and Lisa Spencer, both of Cincinnati; five nephews, one niece, and many cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Mae Walker and Rachel Bryant, and two brothers, Sam “Huck” Walker and Arzel D. Walker.
Services were held Monday, July 24 at the Centennial Baptist Church with Elder J.D. Short III and the Rev. George Fisher officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Carl, Glenn, Arzell, Gary and Keith Walker, James Bryant and Alvis Johnson.

ELEANOR COOK
Eleanor Cook, 81, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Stanford, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1924, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Garret and Beryl Marlow Alford. She was the widow of Ira Cook.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include: one son, Ronald Cook, Stanford; one daughter, Martha Taylor, South Fork; two brothers, Sterling Alford, South Fork, and Thomas Alford, Hustonville; two sisters, Alice Wilson, South Fork and Elvera Campbell, Geneva; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at Spurlin Funeral Home, Stanford, by Rev. David Gambrel. Burial will be in Waters Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Cook Jr., Curtis, Clark and Mick Cook, Donnie and Randall Taylor. Honorary pallbearers are Stephen Reed and Brandon Fields.

CAROLYN HUMMELL
Carolyn Lay-Carr Hummell, 60, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Louisville, died Monday, July 24, 2006 at her home.
Born March 29, 1946 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of Charles (Lynda) Carr of Harrodsburg and Imogene Lay Gordon of Harrodsburg and was the wife of Gerald Edward Hummell.
She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and received her master’s degree at Kent State University. She was a career state employee and retired as a social worker for Central State Hospital. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. She loved antiques, redecorating, and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include: one son, Christopher Jordan Hummell of Harrodsburg; one sister, Charla (Roger) Pratt of Harrodsburg; one brother, Samuel D. (Kathy) Carr of Harrodsburg; and two nephews, Kevin Patrick Lampson and Spencer Douglas Carr.
Services will be held Thursday, July 27 at 1 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Chaplain Mera Corlett officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Pat Clark, Harold Lester, Danny Carter, James Edward Lay, Allen Whitenack and Kevin Patrick Lampson.

ELLEN HURT
Ellen C. Hurt, 93, of Handy Road, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born May 9, 1913 in Kirkwood, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo Clay and Cora Lloyd Cunningham and was the widow of Joe Hurt.
She was a partner in C&T Market for many years. She was active in the Salvisa Christian Church, the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church, the Mercer Farm Bureau and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include: one brother, A.C. (Margaret) Cunningham of Lawrenceburg; two step-sons, Jim Hurt of Champaign, IL, and David Hurt of Berea; one step-daughter, Ann Fraley of Paducah, and six nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Teater, and one step-son, Joe G. Hurt.
Services were held Saturday, July 22 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Ken Klemme officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

OLA MEKELBURG
Ola R. Mekelburg, 95, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at the Danville Centre for Health and Rehabilitation.
Born March 1, 1911 in Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Roberta Coppersmith Turnbull and was the widow of John Carl William Mekelburg.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lexington. She enjoyed singing in the choir, her family, reading, cooking, sewing, telling stories, writing letters, and most of all, sharing the word of God.
Survivors include: three daughters, Barbara Ayash of Reno, NV, Inez Hightower of Glendale, AZ, and Karen Damron of Sacramento, CA; five sons, Clayton Mekelburg of Ft. Lupton, CO, Larry Mekelburg of Reno, NV, Thomas Mekelburg of Harrodsburg, Michael Mekelburg of Tampa Bay, FL, and Gordon Mark Mekelburg of Lisbon, Portugal; three sisters, Nellie Blank of Denver, CO, Juanita West of Otis, CO, and Betty Birch of Searchlight, NV; 38 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Alvin Howard Mekelburg and Leland Mekelburg; one brother, Enos Turnbull; two sisters, Gladys Turnbull and Grace Heltenburg; two grandchildren, Clayton Mekelburg Jr. and Brenda Markel, and one great-grandchild, Shauna Keeley.
A memorial service was held Sunday, July 22, 2006 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor Lohn Johnson officiating. A memorial service is also being held today, July 27 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Yuma, CO with Pastor Allen Yount officiating. Burial will be in the Yuma County Cemetery.

Spring May Morgan, 48, mother of Alex Morgan, died Tue, July 18, 2006.
Born June 15, 1958, she was the daughter of Joyce Sewell May and the late David May Jr.

Mary Phillips, 65, of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born June 4, 1941 in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Edna Mae Lamb and Harvey Miller Shelton Sr. and was the wife of Homer Phillips.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, fishing, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles.
In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Shirleen Phillips of Harrodsburg; one foster son, Mark Turner of Harrodsburg; four brothers, Harvey Shelton Jr. of Shelbyville, Lonnie Shelton and David Shelton, both of Frankfort, and Leonard Shelton of Lawrenceburg; five sisters: Sarah Tandy, Rita Collins and Peggy Gardner, all of Frankfort, Betty Grantham of Foxworth, MS, and Ann Goins of Georgetown; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Wayne Shelton.
Services were held Saturday, July 22 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with John David Lane officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens.
