Man Drowns In Herrington Lake Near Kennedy Bridge
A Harrodsburg man, Brian Patrick Ross, 18, of 311 Cedar Street, drowned in Herrington Lake near Kennedy Bridge last Thursday night.
Steve Oglesby, director of the Mercer County Emergency management Agency, said Ross was swimming with friends off the cliffs adjacent to the bridge. He and his friends were reportedly swimming back and forth from the cliffs to the Pandora Marina dock.
Oglesby said Ross was swimming back to the cliffs and "got into trouble and no one was close to him." Efforts by his friends to reach him were unsuccessful, he said.
Oglesby said none of the swimmers were using any type of flotation device. That water is too dangerous fro swimming without a flotation device," Oglesby said, noting that the water is too deep in that are of the lake to be swimming without some protection.
Rescue workers using boats, dogs and underwater cameras conducted dragging operations and Ross's body was recovered at 9:55 a.m. Friday near the cliff area where he went under the water.
Oglesby said the Burgin Rescue Squad was the initial responder to the scene and was assisted Thursday night and Friday morning by rescue officials from Camp Dick, Danville and Mercer Central.
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources officials and dog handlers including Cletus Smith were also at the scene.
Oglesby expressed appreciation to all those who assisted with dragging operations at the lake and said the workers were appreciative to Gateway of Harrodsburg and Papa John's Pizza for providing food and drink to rescue workers during the search.
Ross was the son of Martin Wayne Ross and Kelli Michelle Chapman Ammons.
