NELLIE MURPHY

Nellie Rachel Norton Murphy, age 85, of Paula Drive, Lawrenceburg, widow of George Alford Murphy, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at her residence.

She was born March 9, 1921 in Spencer County to the late Benjamin H. and Sara Otis Goodlett Norton.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hilltop Church of God.

Survivors include: four sons, Walter Hahn, Taylorsville, Rodney (Wanda) Murphy, Sr., John (Sheila) Murphy, and James (Vicky) Murphy, all of Lawrenceburg; three daughters, Rachel (William) Robinson, Burgin, Sue (Clyde) Ritchey, and Edie (Nick) Lewis, both of Lawrenceburg; six brothers, Charles (wanda) Norton, Columbus, IN, Paul (Nellie) Norton, Edgar Jay (Linda) Norton, and Jackie Norton, all of Taylorsville, Alvin (Marcella) Norton, Edingburg, IN, and Herman (Lisa) Norton, Chaplin; five sisters, Edith (John) Patton, Mildred Nation, Marilyn Hill, Betty Ruth (Dink) Douglas, and Linda Mae Ballinger, all of Taylorsville; 17 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren; two special friends, Juanita Siers and JoAnn Kincaid.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Ben and Wayne Murphy, and William Eddie Hahn; daughter, Gerdine Murphy; two granddaughters, Laura Murphy, and Sara Murphy; five brothers, Tommy, Johnny, Dillard, Joe, and Freeman Norton; two sisters, Margie Stevens and Virginia Nation.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, November 3, at the Gash Memorial Chapel, Lawrenceburg, with Bro. Don Carter and Bro. Greg Taylor. Burial will be in Murphy Cemetery in Anderson County.

Visitation will be 12 – 9 p.m. Thursday, and after 8 a.m. Friday.

Casketbearers will be Gene Hahn, Dannie Robinson, Nathan Nichols, Rodney Murphy, Jr., Joshua Bailey, Joe Murphy, David Cubert, and J. T. Murphy.

Honorary bearers will be Don Murphy, Chris Murphy, Rusty Taylor, Tony Robinson, and Anthony Cook.

HARRISON SPAULDING
Harrison Leroy Spaulding, 51, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 31, 1955 in Frankfort, he was the son of Jessie “Fuzz” and Alline Kinder Spaulding of Harrodsburg, and was the husband of Alana Peavler Spaulding.

He was employed at OSRAM Sylvania in Versailles. He was a member of the Cornishville Christian Church and also attended the Joseph’s Chapel Methodist Church. He was a University of Kentucky basketball fan, and an avid softball player and sports enthusiast.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include: one daughter, Jessie Spaulding (Will) Carlton of Harrodsburg; one sister, Tammy (Steve) Darland of Harrodsburg; two nephews, Steven Christopher and Eric Clayton Darland, both of Harrodsburg, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services were held Monday, Nov. 6 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Gill Duffy officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenny Milburn, David Sexton, Steven C. Darland, Eric Darland, Jeff Montgomery, Jim O’Nan, Bobby Long and Ricky Long.

Fellow employees at OSRAM Sylvania and Dedman, Angel, and Hall, P.S.C. served as honorary pallbearers.

HERSHEL VOTAW
Hershel R. Votaw, 78, of Warwick Road, Harrodsburg, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born June 18, 1928 in Dekalb, IL, he was the son of the late Renous and Ophelia Curry Votaw, and was the husband of Bessie Mae Smith Votaw.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was a retired employee of IBM. He was a member of the Carpenter’s Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Michael (Debbie) Votaw and Larry (Lisa) Votaw, both of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Margaret Proctor of Harrodsburg and Catherine Matherly of Jeffersontown; one brother, Donald Votaw of Lawrenceburg, and two grandsons.

Services will be held Thursday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Greg Warren and Richard McKinley officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews, and honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Metts and the men of the Carpenter’s Christian Church.

Visitation at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carpenter’s Christian Church.

BILLY WATTS
Luther William “Billy” Watts, 69, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born March 7, 1937 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Theodore Roosevelt and Easter EvaMae Patrick Watts, and was the widower of Bonnie Helen Watts.

He was a retired explosive technician at Mercer Stone Company and a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Luther William Watts Jr. and Alvin R. Watts, both of Harrodsburg; one sister, Patricia Phillips of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Leslie Watts of Walton and David Watts of Lawrenceburg, and two grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with James Harley and George Dye officiating. Burial was in New Providence Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Pallbearers were Kevin Watts, Les Watts, Jeff Watts, Edward Gary Peavler, Delbert Phillips and Lawrence Allen Watts.

Honorary pallbearers were Earl Phillips, Keith Watts, David Bruce Peavler, Bobby Peavler, Aubrey D. Peavler, Hubert Peavler, James Watts, Mike Driskell, Jack Nelson, Terry Nelson and Kenny Nelson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

FRANCES WICKLIFFE
Frances Draffen Wickliffe, 82, of Wickliffe Road, Harrodsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Nov. 10, 1923 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Errol and Marzette Gudgell Draffen.

She was one of the first woman attorneys to graduate from the University of Kentucky Law School, and she was a member of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Christine W. Spragens of Marco Island, FL; one son, William B. (Gwen) Wickliffe of Harrodsburg; special companion, Edsel H. Brown of Harrodsburg, and two grandchildren.

Services were held Monday, Nov. 6 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ken Klemme officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Keith Batterton, Nick Dedman, Stan Kerrick, John Wickliffe, Charlie Noel, Dan Culton and Roy Brown.

BUDDY BAER
Buddy Baer, 90, a well-known merchant in Danville, died Friday, November 10, 2006 at Harborside Nursing Home in Louisville.

Born September 8, 1916, in Danville, he was the son of the late Jacob and Freida Heymann Baer. He was the widower of Doris Pollard Baer.

Baer was in the retail business for 30 years at The Hub and Jacob Baer Inc., a men's clothing store. He also served two terms as a city commissioner and had a hand in several other organizations including Danville Retail Merchants, American Legion and Rotary Club.

He was a graduate of Danville High School and attended Georgia Tech. He received his bachelor of science degree from University of Kentucky, where he was later a life member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association.

Baer also was part of the United Way Fund and served two terms as the Easter Seal chairman. He was a former board member of The Salvation Army, Family Services, Chamber of Commerce, Boyle County Family Services, the State Regional Vocational Committee and Danville Nursing Board. He served 30 years on the American Red Cross board and eight years on the Bluegrass Community Action Agency. He served on the Danville School Integration Commission and the Boyle County Board of Elections from 1992 to 1998.

Baer served in the Navy from 1939-1946, working in intelligence. He attended Princeton University Naval Academy and was commissioned an ensign in 1942. He also graduated from the Marine Corps Combat School. He was a liaison under Gen. Douglas McArthur while attached to the Australian Air Corps. He earned three battle stars and a presidential citation.

Baer was a member of Adath Israel Temple and the Jewish Federation of Kentucky. He also was a member of the First Christian Church in Danville for 30 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Bell of Louisville; two sons, Jeffrey Baer of Harrodsburg and Joel Baer of Boston; a sister, Edna Miller of Canton, Ohio; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 14, at Bellevue Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Monday at the Stith Funeral Home, Danville.

Memorials may go to The Salvation Army.

RICHARD CRAIG III

Richard Wayne Craig III, Versailles, two month old baby of Richard Wayne Craig II and Erica Nowlin, died Saturday, November 11, 2006.

Survivors, other than his parents, include: a sister, Makayla Drake; grandparents, Crystal and Tim Larsen, Versailles, William H. Nowlin II, Lexington, Richard W. and Cathy Craig, Sr., Versailles, John and Pat Roberts, Salvisa; great grandparents, Jessie Lee Nichols, Versailles, Harlan and Libby Nowlin, Lawrenceburg, Stan and Brenda Frederick, Nicholasville; uncles, William H. Nowlin III, James Taylor, Jason Craig, Jordon Craig; aunts, Richelle Walker, Jana Craig, Emily Craig, and Leslie Craig.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, November 13, at the Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home with Bill Craig officiating. Burial will be in Midway Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon until the time of service.

WILLIAM DISMEAUX

William Marvin Dismeaux, 61, of Danville, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at the Ft. Logan Hospital in Stanford.

Born June 6, 1945 in Garrard County, he was the son of Jeanette Ison of Lancaster and the late James Dismeaux.

He was a graduate of Mason High School in Garrard County and was employed by FKI Logistex in Danville. He was a member of the Centennial Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

In addition to his mother, survivors include: one son, William Kendall Dismeaux of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Marvette Fields of Lexington and Loutesia Dennis of Danville; three sisters, Mary Leavell of Lancaster, Suzette Ison of Covington and Nina Ison of Stanford; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the Centennial Baptist Church with the Revs. John D. Short and Patrick Alcorn officiating. Burial was in Duncantown Cemetery in Lancaster.

Pallbearers were David Williams, Garland Dismeaux, Gillis Dismeaux, Cedric Leavell, Rodney Whitley and Guye Tarrance.

Honorary pallbearers were Cecil Dunn, Charles Jones, Cabel Merritt, Cecil Pigg, James Davis, Larry Bartleson and Jimmy Newcomb.

The Smith-Jackson Funeral Home in Danville was in charge of arrangements.

DAVID MILLER
David C. Miller, 66, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 23 1940 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Sam and Sarah Baker Miller, and was the husband of Carol Sue Tingle Miller.

He was an auto dealer and a deacon at the Pioneer Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Lori Sue (Jimmy) Ellis and Carla (Mike) Hensley, both of Harrodsburg; two sons, Randy Miller and Donnie Miller, both of Harrodsburg; four sisters, Iva Jewell Reynolds and Jane (Clarence) Byrd, both of Harrodsburg, Nancy (Muriel) Settles of Willisburg and Dianne (Leon) Spalding of Springfield; two brothers, Ronnie (Linda) Miller and Roger Dale (Teresa) Miller, both of Harrodsburg, and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jody Miller; one brother, Jerry Miller, and one sister, Virginia Settles.

Services were held Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Lewis Walter officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jeff Palmer, Tony Tingle, David Tingle II, Harold Palmer, Joe Paul Spalding and Larry Gene Miller.

Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Demaree, Ronnie Keith Miller, Travis Miller, Dustin Miller, Bud Miller and Vic Schwartz.

MARY ANNE PETERS
Mary Anne Peters, 94, of Lexington, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born July 3, 1912 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Lillie Drury Pelly, and was the widow of Colby Peters.

She was a retired seamstress and a member of the Porter Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Pelly.

Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bob Justice officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Porter Memorial Baptist Church, 4300 Nicholasville Rd., Lexington, KY 40515.

KENNETH ROBINSON

Kenneth Norman Robinson, 80, of Nicholasville, widower of Nana Mae Clouse Robinson, died Friday November 10, 2006.

He was born in Lexington October 9, 1926 to the late Marion Elliott and Margaret Ann Buchanon Robinson.

He resided on Shun Pike with a special companion Marie Blair. He was employed for numerous years in the Thoroughbred Horse Industry and was a Navy Veteran of WW II.

Survivors include: five children, Margaret (Nelson) Horseman, Lawrenceburg, Patricia Brummett, Nicholasville, David "Robo" Robinson, Harrodsburg, Sharon (Steve) Black and Cathy Taylor, Nicholasville; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous other family members.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robbie Robinson.

Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Betts & West Funeral Home, Nicholasville, with Rev. Lonnie Moore officiating. Burial will be in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tim Obrecht, Brent Black, Scott Whitson, Scott MonBeck, Bobby Blair and Shawn Goodman.

Honorary bearers will be Dan Hill and Mike Morris.

Family request contributions to Hospice of the Blue Grass.

BETH TAYLOR
Elizabeth “Beth” Dell Taylor, 35, of Owosso, MI, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI.

Born June 30, 1971 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of Kenneth Ray and Phyllis Dell Warner Taylor of Harrodsburg.

She was a music teacher at the Marshall School of Music. After graduating from Mercer County High School in 1989, she attended the University of Kentucky where she played saxophone in the marching band and numerous jazz bands. An accomplished composer and saxophonist, she was more recently a member of the Lansing Concert Band, the Lansing Swing Band, and had performed in several theatrical productions.

In addition to her parents, survivors include: maternal grandmother, Garnetta Warner of Harrodsburg, and one aunt, Elizabeth Souleyrette of Burgin.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Marvin and Alma Taylor, and her maternal grandfather, Marcus Warner.

Services were held Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Porter and Howard Fallis officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Marshall Sims Jr., Brian Sims, Tommy Crawford, Howard Fallis, Wayne Broughton, William Lawson Taylor Jr. and Mark Harlow.

Honorary pallbearers were Dewayne Whitaker, C. M. Shewmaker and Betty Ann Shewmaker.

WILLIAM CAREY

William E. Carey, 78, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born May 6, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Laura Hackbarth Carey.

He was a retired manager for Finger Furniture in Houston, TX.

Survivors include: one son, William D. Carey of Versailles; one step-daughter, Nicky Drury of Lexington; one step-son, Jeff Guttowski of Houston, TX, and one grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ransdell Funeral Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

FLOSSIE CARPENTER
Flossie K. Carpenter, 94, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 11, 1912 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Minnie Devine Kirkland, and was the widow of Frank C. Carpenter.

She was an Elder Emeritus at the Burgin Christian Church, a former choir member, and was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship for many years. She was a volunteer at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital and was a private tutor. She was a school teacher at Madison, Jefferson and Mercer County elementary schools.

Survivors include: one daughter, Ellen Grayce Hellard of Versailles; two sisters, Martha K. Davis and Elsie K. Freeman, both of Harrodsburg; one nephew, and several nieces.

Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Mandy Yates and Jeanette Lukas officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral chapel Wednesday from noon until the hour of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mercer County Library, 109 W. Lexington Street, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, or to the Burgin Christian Church, 300 W. Main Street, Burgin, KY 40310.
