MARYGENEVIEVE MURPHY
Long-time preservationist Mrs. Mary Genevieve Murphy, 84, of 2575 Bowmans Mill Rd., Lexington, wife of Joe H. Murphy Jr., died Saturday, July 22, 2000 at St. Joseph Hospital.
Well-known in Harrodsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Murphy are the former owners of Mercer Motors in Harrodsburg.
"If there ever was a ‘southern’ lady," it was Mrs. Murphy," said long-time friend Bill Randolph of Harrodsburg. "Lexington and this community will miss the lady and her many contributions, especially her expertise in historic preservation."
Mrs. Murphy lived most of her life at Helm Place, which was purchased by her family in 1946. Helm Place, which is on the National Historic Register, was the home of Mary Todd Lincoln’s half sister, Emilie Todd, and one of the premiere houses in Lexington.
In 1995, Mrs. Murphy authored a book about Helm Place entitled "The Story of Helm Place and the People Who Called It Home."
She loved the history surrounding her home and its historic significance and she loved sharing it with guests. Helm Place has often been used by the Lexington Philharmonic, Junior League and other non-profit organizations for fund raisers.
"She was a very gracious hostess, indeed," said Kentucky historian Thomas D. Clark in an article. "She was interested in what went on in this community. She was very interested in Lexington having a good museum."
Mrs. Murphy had numerous items that had belonged to such historic figures as Abraham Lincoln that had been a part of an extensive collection gathered by her father.
One of Mrs. Murphy’s passions was historic preservation. She poured that passion into keeping the historic Bluegrass horse farms from being encroached upon by urban development, said Randolph.
Born in Lexington, Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of the late W.H. and Genevieve Johnson Townsend. Mr. Townsend, who was an authority on Abraham Lincoln, was the founder of the Kentucky Civil War Roundtable and his daughter was the only woman to be given an honorary membership in the roundtable.
She attended the University of Kentucky and earned a BA degree from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was a member of South Elkhorn Christian Church.
She was a board member of the Kentucky Mansion Society (the Mary Todd Lincoln Home) a board member of the Historic McCormack Meeting House, a member of the Sundial Garden Club, board member of the University of Kentucky Library and she championed horse farm preservation.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Joe H. Murphy III of Agoura, CA and Martin Wallace "Wally" Murphy of Harrodsburg and Phoenix, AZ; a daughter Elodie Lawson of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
