MARGARET CUNNINGHAM
Margaret Parrott Cunningham, 87, of Lawrenceburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 at her home.

Born March 28, 1920 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Shelly and Margaret Ethel “Maggie” Isham Parrott, and was the wife of Alonzo Carnegie “A.C.” Cunningham.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Alton Christian Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, Roy S. (Renee) Cunningham and Carroll P. (Betty) Cunningham, both of Shelbyville; two daughters, Zelma Rae (Bobby) Ritter and Joyce (Jackie) Gritton, both of Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Anna Marie Long of Harrodsburg and Ressie Lash of Indianapolis, IN; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Arvin, Oscar, Lige and Essie Parrott; one sister, Frances Royalty, and two grandchildren, Rick Cunningham and Jackie Christopher Gritton.

Services will be held Friday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg with Bros. William Mounts and Gene Koons officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 5-8 p.m.

LEVY LAY
Levy Lay, 77, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born April 29, 1930 in Danville, he was the son of the late James and Minnie Jones Lay, and was the husband of Agnes Wickersham Lay.

He had worked as a quality inspector at Cricketeer Manufacturing Company and was a member of the Bohon Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Joyce Wickersham.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Edward, Ernest, Donald, Dallas and Kenneth Lay, and one sister, Rose Owens.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Julius Hovan and Frank Preston officiating. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery in Perryville.

Pallbearers were Andrew Lawyer, Jason Cochran, Don Bugg, Gary Durr, Jackie Claycomb and Jerry Burns.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bohon Church of Christ Building Fund.

JACK LEAGUE

Jack B. League, 67, of Boyd Avenue, Danville, died Saturday, September 1, 2007, at the Christian Care Center in Lancaster.

Born Wednesday, May 1, 1940, in Boyle County, he was a son of the late Dave and Myrtle Hogue League.

Jack was a 20 year maintenance mechanic for Corning Glass Works and a member of the Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, whom he wed on November 19, 1960, Penny Stroud League; daughter, Ellen League Stafford of Windsor, Ontario; three grandchildren, Mandi Stafford of Detroit, MI and Katie and Ben Stafford, both of Baton Rouge, LA; one nephew, Mike McKinney of Salvisa; and his dog, Molly.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 6, at Bellevue Cemetery with the Bro. Wayne Stevens officiating.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society.

J. B. REED
J. B. Reed, 73, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born June 27, 1934 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Varnie and Anna Mae Carter Reed, and was the stepson of Genevie Long Reed of Harrodsburg. He was the husband of Jane Hafley Reed.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, and was a retired IBM employee.

In addition to his wife and step-mother, survivors include: two daughters, Anna Reed of Columbus, OH, and Kindra (John) Warren of Lexington; one son, Varnie (Tammy) Reed of Harrodsburg; one sister, Trudy Cavins of Lexington; one brother, Hugh Reed of Sacramento, CA, and four grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Harley Humfleet officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Boo Royalty, Ralph Rogers, Levi Warren, Tanner Warren, John Warren and Bryan Chorey.

Members of the Calvary Adult Men Sunday School class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation and Masonic Rites at the funeral chapel Wednesday, 5-8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Childrens Hospital, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502.

LOIS SAYLOR
Lois Anita Harness Saylor, 41, of Danville, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007.

Born Sept. 18, 1965 in Danville, she was the daughter of Ruby Harness of Danville and the late Lois James Harness, and was the wife of Mark Saylor.

She was human resources administrator for the Timberland Company. She was a 1983 graduate of Danville High School and formerly worked at Main Street Kids and Maple Tree Gallery. She was the Sunday School secretary and a member of the First Church of God in Danville.

In addition to her husband and mother, survivors include: one son, Ben Saylor; one daughter, Erin Saylor, and her fiancé, Chuck Ellis; two sisters, Carol (Barry) Frazelle of Lexington and Frances (Jim) Bourne of Burgin; one brother, Doug (Carol) Harness of Amarillo, TX, and father- and mother-in-law Marvin and Virginia Saylor of Danville.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the First Church of God with the Rev. Mike Cox officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews Paul Harness, Andrew Harness, Matthew Bourne, Dalton Caudill, Kyle Phillips, Rick Morgan, Justin Morgan, Eric Eastwood and James Eastwood.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation or to the First Church of God Building Fund.

Stith Funeral Home in Danville was in charge of arrangements.

BESSIE TAYLOR
Bessie Louise Taylor, 54, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007 at her home.

Born Aug. 4, 1953 in Lawrenceburg, she was the daughter of the late Goodloe Thomas and Gladys Milburn Peach, and was the wife of Larry Ray Taylor.

She was a retired employee of the Modine Company and was a member of the Joseph Chapel United Methodist Church and Gideons International.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Kristi Louise Teachey of Harrodsburg; one son, Lawrence Ray Taylor of Harrodsburg; three sisters, Betty Sue Young and Aileen Russell, both of Harrodsburg, and Naomi Jean Powell of Lawrenceburg; one brother, George Melvin Peach of Lawrenceburg, and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, James David Peach.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 4 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Buddy Coleman and Gill Duffee officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tommy Peach, Michael Peach, Danny Waldridge, Jerry Waldridge, Roger Long and Jessie L. Spaulding.

Honorary pallbearers were Glenn Reynolds, Curtis Sherrow, Dalton Hendren, Darrell Agee, Guilford Waggener, Joe Harlow, Mark Edwards and Howard Howells.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph Chapel United Methodist Church, to the Gideon Bible Fund or to Heritage Hospice.

JOHNNY THORNTON
Johnny L. Thornton, 68, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Born Feb. 5, 1939 in Oldham County, he was the son of the late William D. and Beulah Jane Lyons Thornton, and was the husband of Carolyn Sims Thornton.

He was a retired farmer and mechanic. He was a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church and attended Benton Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Caroline (Jamie) Tatum and Anne Marie (Mike) Estes, both of Harrodsburg; one sister, Peggy (Danny) Gibson of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Harold (Brenda) Thornton of Harrodsburg and Eugene (Shelby) Thornton of Garrard County, and one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Thornton.

Services were held Monday, Sept. 3 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Tim Gray officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Paul Hartman, Mickey Gilliland, Robert Gilliland, Bob Burchett, Johnny Bailey and Mike Hudson.

R. D. Peyton and Billy Beavers served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Benton Baptist Church Youth Fund.

ROBERT BARNETT

Robert M. “Bob” Barnett, 83, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007 in Pompano Beach, FL.

Born March 29, 1924 in Louisville, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Sally Lawson Barnett.

He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1943-46 and 1951-52. He was a retired teacher and coach, having worked in Michigan, Texas and Florida.

Survivors include: one first cousin, Knute Lawson of San Antonio, TX, and one second cousin, James Davis Lawson of Harrodsburg.

Graveside services were held Monday, Sept. 10, 2007 at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

JAMES CARPENTER
James Frank Carpenter, 92, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2007 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born April 17, 1915 in Lewisburg, he was the son of the late Frank and Ina Rebecca Dugan Carpenter, and was the widower of Jane Royalty Carpenter.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired general manager for Continental Trailways Western Division and a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church, and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Survivors include: special friend, Beulah Young; one brother-in-law, Roscoe Royalty of Harrodsburg; one sister-in-Law, Ellen Faye Adkinson of Harrodsburg, and one cousin, Martha Downing of Winchester, OH.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Spring Hill Cemetery with Ken Klemme officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kosair Children’s Hospital.

MARIAN COSTELLO
Marian Dean Costello, 74, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007 at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.

She was born in Mercer County and was the wife of Thomas M. Costello Sr.

She was a member of Saint Michael Catholic Church. Before retirement, she was a registered medical technologist and chemistry supervisor for Audubon, Suburban and the former St. Joseph hospitals.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: six children, Debbie (Pat) Hayden, Sandy (Mark) Mueller, Thomas (Teresa) Costello Jr., Cathy (David) Wilkerson, Kimberly (Tommy) Nalley and Kevin (Liz) Costello; three sisters, Nora Francis Black, Katherine Dean and Fatima Dean; one brother, A. T. Dean Jr.; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Saint Michael Catholic Church. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Michael Catholic Church.

Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home in Louisville was in charge of arrangements.

JOSEPHINE DEVINE
Josephine “Aunt Jo” Devine, 76, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born April 9, 1931 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Thurman “Big Daddy” and Ruth Sanders Goodlett, and was the wife of Forrest B. Devine.

She was a homemaker, baker and seamstress, as well as a volunteer. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and the Mercer County Senior Citizens.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Kathy (Tony) Pankey of Harrodsburg; one son, Mark Devine of Goshen, OH; one sister, Elois Woods of Salvisa, and six grandchildren, Ian and Emily Devine, Angie Pankey, Neal (Christy) Pankey, and Andrew and Suni Ashton.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur E. and Truman Goodlett.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Fellowship Baptist Church with James Harley and Joe Cooper officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Glenn Devine, Hanley McMullin, Eddie Goodlett, Herbie and Andrew Ashton and T.C. Claunch.

Memorial contributions may be made to The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, to the Mercer County Senior Citizens, or to the Fellowship Baptist Church.

MIKKI KNIGHT
Mikki Randall Knight, 55, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007.

Born Jan. 15, 1952 in Talladega, AL, he was the son of Rev. J. W. and Helen Goss Knight of Steele, AL, and was the husband of Deborah Marie Baker Knight.

He was an employee of the Mercer County School System and was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include: one daughter, Jessica Nicole (Cliff) Sanders of Harrodsburg; one stepson, Christopher (Amy) Hart of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Kimberly (Dale) Burks and Jo (Tim) Reed, both of Steele, AL; one brother, Ron (Joyce) Knight of Steele, AL; paternal grandmother, Valda Brand of Selma, AL, and one grandson.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Joe Smith officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Don Long, Steve Hayden, Rick Morgan, Dale Burks, Carter Logue and Jimmy Howard.

GRETCHEN LAY

Gretchen R. Lay, 59, of Louisville died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, in Louisville, survived by her husband, Norvie L. Lay.

Born Oct. 5, 1947, in Washington DC, she was the daughter of the late Ballantine Raditic and Kathryn Fugler Messenger of Front Royal, VA.

Other survivors include her mother, Kathryn F. Messenger of Front Royal, VA; her daughters, Charity F. Dawson (Anthony), Gretchen E. Fine of Louisville, Diana Dee Denitto of Stephens City, VA; sons, Thaddeus Fine and Justice fine (Leigh) of Louisville; step-daughter, Lea Anne Sullivan (Pat) of Chicago, IL; sister, Diane Dove of Mt. Vernon, OH; brother, John B. Messenger of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Tristan and Carter Fine of Louisville, Christopher Kilpatrick of Stephens City, VA and Patrick and Anna Sullivan of Chicago.

She was a certified travel consultant for the Travel Authority. She was a member of Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church and served as a lector and former member of the Parish Council.

A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church; 7813 Shelbyville Road with the eulogy delivered by the Rev. Dr. Christopher M. Caldwell, pastor of Broadway Baptist Church in Louisville. Visitation was 2-8 p.m. Aug. 14 at Pearson’s; 149 Breckenridge Lane. A visitation was also held at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel in Harrodsburg from 1-3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15 followed by a memorial service at the chapel by Rev. Cynthia M. Collins, Minister to Children, of Broadway Baptist Church in Louisville and a graveside prayer service conducted by Father Danny Schwendeman. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

MARY MCDANIEL
Mary Elizabeth Kirkland McDaniel, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007 at her home.

Born in Woodford County, she was a daughter of the late John and Readie Blair Kirkland, and was the widow of Johnie Sanford McDaniel.

She was a member of Little Texas Community Church.

Survivors include: four children, the Rev. James (Wanda) McDaniel of Augusta, GA, Virginia (Bobby) Hayslett of Harrodsburg, and Anna (Mike) Keefe and Johnny (Dean) Combs, both of Lexington; one “second son,” James “J. J.” Brady of Lexington; a special great nephew, Donald C. (Ashley) Myers Jr. of Georgetown and his son Jackson; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Sonia Blair, Wilmore, John Gene and Otha Kirkland; seven sisters, Laura Gardner, Nellie Bingham, Edna Simpson, Sally Kirkland, Kate Berreman, Gladys Taylor Ring and Anna Bowers, and two grandsons, Christopher Andrew and David Alexander Keefe.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington with the Rev. James E. Heard officiating. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bobby Hayslett, Dean Combs, Mike Keefe, James Michael McDaniel, Michael Jonathan Keefe and James William McDaniel.
