HERBERT HOOD

Herbert Hood, 76, of Beechland Road, Springfield, died at 6:10 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at his home after an illness.

A native of Washington County, he was born March 5, 1930 to the late Richard and Ida Belle Chesser Hood.

He was a member of the Willisburg Church of God of Prophecy, a farmer and a livestock dealer.

He was preceded in death by a step-grandson, Shawn Sweazy on Mary 30, 1997; five sisters, Essie Hood, Erma Montgomery, Lillie Curtsinger, Claudie Curtsinger and Flossie Dedman; and six brothers, Raymond Hood, Namon Hood, Hollie Hood, Sammie Hood, Johnny Hood and Olson Hood.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Burns Hood; two sons, Ronnie (Charlotte) Hood and Mike (Debbie) Hood, all of Springfield; three daughters, Karen (James) Vandiver, Harrodsburg, Diane (James) Saweazy, Chaplin and Donna Hood, Springfield; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 23 at Willisburg Church of God of Prophecy with Rev. Johnny Hood, a nephew, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Steve Puckett, the church pastor.

Burial was in the Willisburg Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ruel Curtsinger Jr., Charles Dudley Tapp, Darrell Monroe, Charles A. Coulter, William Warner and Carroll D. Arnold.

Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

ERNESTINE KEEBORTZ
Ernestine R. Keebortz, 82, of Cardinal Avenue, died Friday, March 31, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born July 23, 1923 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Ernest and Mary Bell Teater Reed and the widow of Joseph “Buddy” Keebortz.

She was a retired legal secretary for I. C. James and David Taylor, Attorneys at Law, and she was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

Survivors include: one niece, Pam (Mike) Ellis of Harrodsburg; one nephew, Billy Claunch of Versailles, and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ramah Claunch and Loraine McGinnis.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 3 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dann Masden officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tim, Myron and Chad Ellis, Billy and Todd Claunch and David Taylor.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harrodsburg Christian Church, 305 South Main St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

PATRICIA MILLS

Patricia Carol Mills, 39, of Walnut St., Lebanon, died March 30, 2006, at her residence.

She was born in Marion County March 17, 1967.

Mills was previously employed by Akebono in Springfield.

Survivors include: one son, William Christopher Stumph, Lebanon; one daughter, Christie Ann Stumph, Lebanon; her father and stepmother, Donna and William Owen Mills Jr., New Haven; two brothers William Owen Mills III and Joseph Mills, both of New Haven; and four sisters, Melinda Dennis, Harrodsburg, Helen Luckett and Donna Wood, both of Lebanon, and Phyllis Boblitt, Willisburg.

She was preceded in death by: her mother, Shirley Tungate Mills.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 1, at Campbell-DeWitt Funeral Home, Lebanon, with burial in Saint Augustine Church Cemetery. Bro. George Hourigan and Father Dennis Borca officiated.

Campbell-DeWitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

PATRICIA NICKLES
Patricia Ann Nickles, 59, formerly of Danville, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born May 3, 1946 in New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Russo Santoro and the wife of William “Bill” Nickles of Danville.

She was a self-employed private nurse, a member of the Faith Fellowship Church and the Red Hat Society, and she enjoyed working with ceramics.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: three sons, Alfred Cox of Stanford, Edward Cox of Lexington and John Cox of Mt. Sterling; three brothers, Anthony Santoro and Joey Santoro, both of Florida, and Edward Santoro of New Jersey; one sister, Mary Santoro of New Jersey; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Saturday, April 1 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Pastor Rudy Henderson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1941 Bishop Lane, Suite 110, Louisville, KY 40218.

BESSIE OSBORNE
Bessie Frances Osborne, 91, of Moreland Avenue, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 9, 1914 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Nancy Leach Chumley and the widow of Howard Osborne.

She was a homemaker and the oldest member of the Harrodsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Janice Yount of Harrodsburg; one son, Billy Lawrence Currens of Harrodsburg; Merry Lee Jordan and Terry Lee Currens whom were raised in her home; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 4 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Jimmy Owens officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Frank Jackson, Jeoff Peele, Mike Brown, Terry Lee Currens, Hugh Phillips, Terry Sears and Dr. Thomas Jackson.

EULA SCHNEIDER
Eula Schneider, 71, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 5, 1934 in Bledsoe, she was the daughter of Sarah Ellis of London and the late Pearl Davis and the widow of Robert T. Schneider.

She was a retired Burgin Independent School teacher and was a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church. She attended the University of Louisville and did her graduate work at Eastern Kentucky University. She enjoyed reading, flower gardening and writing.

In addition to her mother, survivors include: one son, Mark (Amy) Schneider of Dyersburg, TN; one daughter, Cara Schneider of Nashville, TN, and two grandsons, Jake and Ethan.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 4 at the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church with Dr. Ted Nicholas officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

The Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

SYLVIA THOMAS
Sylvia Marie Thomas, 74, of Danville, died Friday, March 31, 2006 at Central Baptist Hospital.

Born February 2, 1932, she was the daughter of the late John and Estelle Redford Lane. She was the widow of Vanus Harrison Thomas Jr.

She was a housewife and member of Refreshing Ministries.

Survivors include: six daughters, Molly Propes, Burgin, Margaret Gilbert and Linda Hilliard, both of Danville, Lela Cummins, Perryville, Kay Gilbert, Nicholasville and Sharon Snow, Hustonville; three sons, Gene and Kenneth Thomas, both of Danville, and Glendall Thomas, Kings Mountain; 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Thomas.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bartle Funeral Home, Liberty, by Cleo Cox and Ed Nichols. Burial will be in Fair Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Heath Thornsberry, Eugene Simpson, Greg and Brandon Graham, Jeff Luttrell and James Dotson.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Sunday and after 8 a.m. Monday.

CLARA WALKER
Clara Mae Walker, 87, of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 6, 1919 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Sarah Frances Talbert Walker and the widow of James Marion “Bozo” Walker.

She was a self-employed housekeeper and a member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the usher board.

Survivors include: one sister, Ernestine W. Bennett of Harrodsburg; one sister-in-law, Betty Mae Lyons of Harrodsburg; five nephews, Arzell, Andrew, Gary and Keith Walker, all of Harrodsburg, and Carl Walker of Columbus, OH; two nieces, Mary Frances Dunn of Harrodsburg and Lisa Spencer of Cincinnati, OH; several great-nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew Samuel Walker and Arzell Davis Walker, and one sister, Rachel Bryant.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 8 at 1 p.m. at the Centennial Baptist Church with Elder J.D. Short III officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be George Hudson, James Bryant, Jesse Thomas, James Thurman, Leon VanDyke Jr. and Albert Lee Taylor.

Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

The Parks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

AVERY AKERS
Avery Akers, 81, of Lexington, died Saturday, April 8, 2006.

Born in Prestonsburg, he was a son of the late Farley and Orea Akers.

He was a retired electrician, and a member of Gardenside Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, volunteered at the VA Hospital, and was a member of the DAV and VFW.

Survivors include: his children, Linda Caroll Marcum, Delores Anne Norris and Gary Akers, all of Lexington, Gina Gayle Haffner, Orlando, FL and Harold Dean (Karen) Akers, Greenville, NC; one sister, Mary Magdalene Akers, Zanesville, OH; three brothers, John Akers, Harrodsburg, Clinton Akers, Nicholasville and Brice Akers, Salvisa; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11:30 am, Tuesday, April 11, at the W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland. Burial will follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 pm, Monday at the funeral home.

JOHN BENGE JR.

John Kenneth Benge Jr., 53, of Lexington, died April 7, 2006 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lexington.

Born July 4, 1952 in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, he was the son of John Kenneth Benge Sr. of Mercer County and the late Mary Helen Montgomery Benge.

He was a retired counter intelligence agent with the U.S. Army. He was a Baptist and enjoyed woodworking and painting.

In addition to his father, survivors include: two sons, Ian Benge and Lee (Crystal) Benge, both of Silver City, NM; one daughter, Melanie Guarino of Danville; two brothers, Ronald Benge of Sacramento, CA, and James Benge of Minneapolis, MN; one sister, Carolyn Benge of Mercer County; former wife, Sandy Mastin of Danville; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Laura James.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 12 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. David Culp officiating. Burial with military honors was in Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Jessamine County.

Pallbearers were Ian and Lee Benge, Jeremy Curnutt, Michael Guarino, Steven Wright and Kenny James.

LIZZIE BLACK
Lizzie Mae Barnett Black, 93, of Springfield, died Sunday, April 9, 2006 at the Springfield Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Jan. 30, 1913 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Kate Darnell Barnett and the widow of James Alvin Black.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Thompsonville Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Glenn (Nancy) Black of Springfield and Jerry Black of Lexington; one sister, Mildred Noel of Springfield; one brother, Billy Gene Barnett of Springfield; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Charles Black, and one daughter, Kay Willison.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 11 at the Carey and Son Funeral Home in Springfield with the Rev. John Watts, pastor of the Thompsonville Baptist Church, the Rev. Bobby Chesser, pastor of the Rockbridge Baptist Church, and the Rev. John McDaniel, pastor of the Temple Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Peter Cemetery in Mackville.

Pallbearers were Mark, James and Billy Barnett, Julius, Eddie and Paul Noel and Barney Allen Sutton.

Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

CHERYL BOBBITT
Cheryl “Tincey” Katherine Cowan Bobbitt, 62, of Somerset, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.

Born April 9, 1943 in Adair County, she was the daughter of the late Albert Cowan and Maggie Cowan Quarterman and the wife of James “Sleepy” Bobbitt.

She was a former board member of the YMCA, assisted with Camp Hope, United Way, Girl Scouts, Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and was involved with many Masonic Lodge #65 activities.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: two daughters, Regina Bobbitt Alexander of Somerset and Beverly Ann Bobbitt of Cincinnati, OH; two sons, James M. “Bo” (Debora) Bobbitt Jr. of Frankfort and Dennis Lee (Michele) Bobbitt of Lexington; five brothers, Larry Glen Cowan, Delbert (Linda) Cowan and Gilbert Cowan, all of Lexington, Roger Dale (Tanya) Cowan of Somerset and Lionel Quarterman of Nicholasville; one sister, Dorothea Cowan of Somerset; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one infant son, Jerry Cowan, and one daughter, Donna Kay Bobbitt Quarterman.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 12 at the Lange and New Brothers Family Funeral Home in Somerset with the Revs. Tim Napier and Eric Barns officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Somerset.

Pallbearers were Clifford Jasper, Billy Jay Barnes, Virgil Perkins, Bill Bertram, Clyde Gilmore, James Alexander and Richard Jamison.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, c/o Lange and New Bros. Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1564, Somerset, KY 42502.

MARCELLA BURNS
Marcella Shewmaker Burns, 75, of Lexington, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born May 1, 1930 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Effie Mae Yeaste Shewmaker and the widow of Norvia Rue Burns.

She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Lexington. She had taught clogging and line dancing for a number of years, enjoyed square dancing, and was a member of the Thoroughbred Square Dance Club and the Rhythm Rounds.

She also enjoyed bowling, golf and crafts.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mae Rue Burns of Lexington; one son, Fred Reid Burns of Lexington; two sisters, Rosella (Marvin) Lawson of Harrodsburg and Elva Oldham of Harrodsburg; one granddaughter, Meredith Rue Burns of Lexington, and special friend, Alison Kae Hiler of Lexington.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Merlin Shewmaker, and one sister, Ethia Bussell.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 12 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Hancock officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tommy Moore, Larry Sanders, Jack Wireman, Dr. Paul Thomas Moore, Roy Lynn Oldham, Travis Oldham and Lee Sanders.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care Center, 1 St. Joseph Dr., Lexington, KY 40504, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

KATHERINE CATON
Katherine Caton, 91, of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 22, 1915 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Overton and Mary Murphy Trayner and the widow of Carroll Caton.

She was a retired seamstress of the Cricketeer Manufacturing Company and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Don Billy (Delores) Caton and Jerry (Frances) Caton, both of Harrodsburg; four grandchildren, Joy (Jack) Robertson, Ray (Wendy) Caton, Chris (Cathy) Caton and Nick (Kelly) Caton; seven great-grandchildren, Ann Katherine Robertson, Emily, Alex, Gracie, Will, Aaron and Seth Caton.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris, Nick and Ray Caton, Jack Robertson, Larry Camic and Terry Young.

Visitation will be at the funeral chapel Thursday, April 13 from 5-8 p.m. and Friday prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, T.V. Ministry, 302 South Main St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.
