Luther Humes, 76, widow of Betty J. Gabbard Humes, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at his home in Lexington.
Born in Valley View, KY, he was the son of the late John Marion and Leatha Rhodes Humes.
He was the retired owner and operator of the 4th Street Grocery, and a former Manager of Independence Life and Accident Insurance Company. He was a member of Victory Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge # 1 F&AM.
Survivors include: one son, Larry (Peggy) Humes, Lexington; one daughter, Debbie (Bill) Harris, Harrodsburg; one brother, Vernon (Mallie) Humes; one sister, Grace (Bob) Rogers; a brother-in-law, Estill Parks all of Lexington, five grandchildren, Ashley N. Harris, Harrodsburg, Amber Dietrick, Texas, David L. Humes, Canada, Christopher L. Humes, Georgia and Michael Humes of Alabama and 5 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh Humes and Lewis Humes, a sister, Dixie Parks, and a special friend, Helen Stewart.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at the W. R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway conducted by Rev. Carl Wagoner with burial in the Lexington Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dave Yarber, Robert Curtsinger, David L. Humes, Christopher l. Humes, Curt Collins and Tommy Kidwell.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday and 6-9 p.m. Friday.
VICKIE KINDER
Vickie Rae Drury Kinder, 53, of Lawrenceburg, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at her home.
Born July 10, 1952 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of Christine Rae Drury Pontrich of Lawrenceburg and the late Roscoe Brown and was the wife of David Franklin Kinder.
She was a homemaker and attended the First Christian Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Kimberly Dawn (Todd) Piatt of Lawrenceburg; one son, David James Harrison Kinder of Lawrenceburg, and two granddaughters, Christa and Taylor Piatt.
She was preceded in death by one infant son, Gary Wayne Kinder.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 13 at the Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg with the Rev. Crystal McAliley officiating. Burial was in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.
JOHN KURTZ
John D. Kurtz, 83, of Louisville, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at Westminister Terrace in Louisville.
Born April 6, 1923 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Bessie Baldwin Kurtz and the husband of Edith Louise Robinson Kurtz.
He served in World War II with the U.S. Army. He was a retired building contractor, a 32 Degree Mason, and a member of Sunset Masonic Lodge and Eastview Church of Christ in Louisville.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: four daughters, Lavone (Ken) Southworth of Wisconsin, Laverne Cochran of Mesa, AZ, Rita Kay (Tommy) Stillwell of Louisville and Linda (Craig) Smothermon of Mesa, AZ; one son, William D. (Patsy) Kurtz of Mesa, AZ; one sister, Addie Francis (Lee) Shipman of Mesa, AZ; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, H.M., Harvey and Stanley Kurtz, and three sisters, Mary E. Gilpin, Lilly Shakleford and Gladys Hendren.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 11 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Lowell Steele officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
LILLIE MCKINNEY
Lillie Mae McKinney, 77, of Louisville Road, Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 20, 1928 in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Myrtle Hogue and the widow of W. H. “Jack” McKinney.
She was the former owner and operator of McKinney Tax Service, and was a member of the Salvisa Baptist Church and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.
Survivors include: one son, Michael McKinney of Lexington; one brother, Jack B. League of Danville; three grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon McKinney and Gene Moore, and two great-grandchildren, William Hunter and Amanda Grace McKinney.
She was preceded in death by one son, David McKinney.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Jason Clark officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Gene Moore, Barry Currens, Carroll Sanford, Danny Church, Dennis Tyler and Billy Clark.
Honorary pallbearers will be Betty Ann Clark, Cheryl Currens, Kathy Baxter, Rose Gutherie, Ann Whitnack, Mary Ellen Church and members of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.
Visitation will be at the funeral chapel Thursday, May 18 after 5 p.m. and Friday prior to the service.

HAZEL MURRAY
Manota “Hazel” Murray, 90, died Friday, May 12, 2006 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born Feb. 13, 1916 in Harlan, she was the daughter of the late John and Serlida Napier Houston and the widow of Harvey Murray.
She retired after 30 years as a waitress at Beaumont Inn and was a member of Dry Branch Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.
Survivors include: one son, Willie Murray of Connersville, IN; one daughter, Ellen Lathrem of Harrodsburg; one brother, Benson Houston of Batesville, IN; one sister, Monett Ball of Brookville, IN; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 15 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Donnie Releford officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Richard Lee Spain Jr., Anthony Lathrem, Steve Jones, Willie Murray Jr., Bryan Murray and Troy Satterly.
Honorary pallbearers were Gordon Hensley, Kevin Sallee and Shaun Thorpe.
JOHN RUSSELL
John H. Russell, 85, of Columbus, GA, died Monday, May 8, 2006 at the Medical Center in Columbus.
Born Feb. 9, 1921 in Hardin County, he was the son of the late John H. and Birdie Morris Russell and the widower of Ruth Saylor Russell.
He was a 1938 graduate of Harrodsburg High School and attended Centre College and the University of Kentucky. He was stationed at Venthill Farms Station, VA, with the Army Signal Corps as a code interceptor during World War II. He was a member of Sherwood Presbyterian Church and the Lake Harding Neighborhood Association board of directors. He was retired from the Specialty Distributing Company of Atlanta, GA.
Survivors include: two daughters, Margaret Lynn “Meg” Russell-Cornett of Pine Mountain, GA, and Susan Russell Summers of Atlanta, GA, and two sisters, Lynn R. Proctor and Annetta Russell, both of Danville.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 13 at the Stith Funeral Home in Danville. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
NANCYE BALES
Nancye Lynn Bales, 55, of Burgin, died Monday, May 22, 2006 at her home.
Born Aug. 24, 1950 in Burbank, CA, she was the daughter of Nancye Kirch Seeberger of Lexington and the late Charles Seeberger.
Survivors include: three daughters, Samatha Whittaker and Tiffany Bales, both of Burgin, and Ashley Tucker of Lexington; one brother, Kirk C. Seeberger of West Palm Beach, FL, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
BRUNETTE BROWN
Brunette Sanders Brown, 88, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 in Wisconsin.
Formerly of Mercer County, she was the widow of Walter T. Brown.
Survivors include: one daughter, Diane Thacker of Wisconsin; one son, Hugh L. Brown of Wisconsin; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Drury, and four brothers, Hillary, Ralph, Shivley and Jesse Sanders.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 24 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
DONALD COOLEY
Donald Howard Cooley, 66, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 24, 1939 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Fred and Emma McGinnis Cooley and the husband of Shirley Riley Cooley.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, a television repairman and former insurance agent. He was an amateur ham radio operator and enjoyed electronics, flowers, landscaping and working on and collecting old clocks.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: three sons, John Cooley (Cathy Royalty) and Kevin (Stephanie) Cooley, both of Harrodsburg, and Joseph (Jamie) Cooley of Burgin; one brother, James Elmer Cooley of Lawrenceburg; one sister, Marie Love of Florida; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 25 at 11 a.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery with Bro. James Harley officiating.
Pallbearers will be Nick Yeast, Shelby McWhorter, Kenny Baker, Timothy Vinyard, Ben Cooley and Jesse Harris.

OPAL ELLIS
Opal Ellis, 87, of Lexington, widow of Raymond Ellis, died Friday, May 19, 2006 at Hospice Care Center.
Born in Whitley County, she was the daughter of the late Mark and Anna Jane Bryant Davis.
She was a member of the First Church of God in Paris and affiliated with Southland Christian Church and Southern Acres Christian Church in Lexington.
Survivors include: two daughters, Loretta Ellis, Harrodsburg, and Shirley Ellis, Lexington; two grandsons, Dennis Mayne, Lexington and Roger Mayne, Port St. Lucie, FL, and one great grandson, Hunter Mayne of Port St. Lucie.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Mayne.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 22, at the W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland conducted by Rev. Charles Shrewsberry with burial at 5 p.m. Monday at the New Mt. Zion Cemetery in Whitley County conducted by Rev. Gary Lovitt.
Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Monday.
JAMES JENKINS
James Edward Jenkins, 84, husband of Connie Switzer Jenkins, Lexington, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at the VA Medical Center, Leestown Road, in Lexington.
He was born in Harrodsburg, son of the late Charlie and Dovy Harden Jenkins.
He was a former distributor for Speed Queen Washers and Parts, self employed laundromat owner, and for 14 years was a part-time driver for the Central Kentucky Limousine Service.
He was a member of Northeast Christian Church, a former member of Tates Creek Christian Church, where he served as deacon and treasurer and he was a very close friend of his former pastor Dr. Robert Weaver. He was also a very close friend and relative of Senior Pastor Joe Wright of the Central Christian Church of Wichita, KS.
He was a former member of the Lions Club, a Kentucky Colonel, a Big Brother, and a member of Man O' War VFW Post # 8, and he served with the U. S. Army during WWII. He would pour rain from his bowl of cold oats in the battle for the Aleutian Islands, from the Japanese held island. He was in a foxhole in Northern France, when they learned their Commander-in Chief, F.D.R. was dead. He was in the Sweep of Northern France to destroy any nest of German soldiers that were left. As they swept into Paris, they rode down the Champ-de-Elysees and stopped on the outskirts to scramble eggs in their helmets. His orders came to move into Germany and he was in a small German village when the German people started shouting that Hitler was dead. He helped feed starving German children and was ordered to go and help guard over 60,000 German prisoners of war.
Surviving, besides his wife, are: his step-children, Kevin Tudor (Sharon), Mt. Sterling, Elizabeth Drzewiecki (Scott), Spring Hill, TN, James McDowell, Lexington, KY; two brothers, Earl Jenkins, Versailles, Buford Jenkins, Stanford; two sisters, Edith Nowland and Margaret Lester, both of Harrodsburg; and step grandchildren, Forrest Tudor, Meredith Tudor, Hannah Drzewiecki, Harrison Drzewiecki, Hagan Drzewiecki, Ann Ham, Betty Ham, Polly Hayden, Bob Ham, Bill Ham.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Jenkins, two brothers, Elmer Jenkins and Meredith Jenkins, four sisters, Hattie, Lucille, Lorraine and Edna.
His funeral service will be held at noon Monday, May 22, at W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland conducted by Rev. Whit Criswell, Chaplain Richard Hargett, Rev. Wayne B. Smith and Dr. David Jefferies. Burial will be in Camp Nelson National Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Man O' War Post # 8.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Tudor, James McDowell, Scott Drzewiecki, Richard Hargett, Jimmy Jenkins and Al Stakelin.

Ronald Lloyd Miller, 74, of Durham, N.C., formerly of Lawrenceburg, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Wake Medical Center in North Carolina.
Born November 11, 1931, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Bernice C. Nelson Miller.
He received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Illinois, was a retired pharmacist with Super X Drug Stores in Versailles and Harrodsburg, and was a member of Lawrenceburg First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife Ruby Pauline Baisden Miller, Durham, NC; a daughter, Holly Lynn (Frank) Delucia, of Durham, NC; three sons, Gregory Lloyd (Pam) Miller Durham, NC, Wayne Lloyd (Corrette) Miller, King, NC, and Charles William (Kim) Miller, Morehead City, NC; and eight grandchildren, Clint Miller of Durham, N.C., Hattie Miller, Scarlett Miller, Noah Miller, all of King, N.C., and Zachary Miller, Eli Miller and Joy Miller, all of Morehead City, NC.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Scarlett Lynn Miller.

Born June 9, 1911 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Atwell and Ida Preston Crossfield and the widow of A. L. “Sammy” Ransdell.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Ebenezer Church of Christ in Salvisa.
Survivors include: three daughters, Eunice (R.D.) Peyton and Joyce (Robert) Warren, both of Salvisa, and Jackie (Jim) White of Georgetown; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and four step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Ebenezer Church Of Christ with John Kessel officiating. Burial was in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Roy Harold Rogers, 83, of Lawrenceburg, died Monday, May 22, 2006 at his residence.
Born May 29, 1922, in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Amos and Sarah Kays Rogers.
He was a former school bus driver for the Anderson County Board of Education, a farmer and a water hauler. He was a World War II Army veteran, and a member and senior deacon of Goshen Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years: Lucy C.
