LINDA POWELL

Accident Leads to Local Woman's Death

A Mercer County woman who was injured in a vehicle accident on the U.S. 127 Bypass Jan. 23 has died from a combination of injuries received in the accident and pre-existing illnesses, Mercer County Deputy Sheriff Chris Kehrt said Monday.

Linda Powell of Hensley Heights died at 11:25 p.m. Sunday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Kehrt said the Fayette County Coroner's office contacted him of the death and probable cause of death on Monday.

The accident occurred at the intersection of the Bypass and KY152 when vehicles driven by Cornell Powell of 110 Hensley Heights and Harold T. Dennis of 371 Longview Drive collided in the intersection.

Linda Powell was a passenger in the Powell vehicle.

Also injured in the accident were Cornell Powell and another passenger in his car, Megan Kittles of 656 Larchmont. Dennis was also injured. Both vehicles were severely damaged.

Kehrt said because Powell's death occurred within 30 days of the accident, the accident will now be classified as a fatal one.

STEPHEN SPRADLIN

Quadriplegic Dies In Accidental Asphyxiation

A 30-year-old quadriplegic man from Harrodsburg died yesterday apparently from accidental positional asphyxiation.

Stephen Harris Spradlin of Virginia Avenue in Alexander Heights was pronounced dead at 10:50 a.m. after a passerby found him and called police. Police received the call about 10:22. Mercer County Coroner Sonny Ransdell, who pronounced Spradlin dead, said the accident probably occurred between 9:45 and 10:20 a.m.

Spradlin, an industrial engineer at Hitachi Automotive, had recently had tendon replacement surgery to his right arm and that arm was still in a cast. This was the first time Spradlin had ventured out of his home and down the ramp since the surgery, said Ransdell.

Spradlin was found slumped forward in his wheelchair at the bottom of the ramp. Ransdell said Spradlin had tipped his upper torso over and could not raise himself. He could not breathe in that position, the coroner said.

Ransdell said Spradlin, who was involved in a motor vehicle accident several years ago that left him quadriplegic, controlled his wheelchair by using a toggle switch with his left hand.

Spradlin lived alone, but he had home health services.

He is the son of Robert and Peggy Spradlin of Mt. Sterling.
