Sarah VanArsdall Underwood, 92, of 517 Ashland Avenue, Shelbyville, died Monday, March 27, 2001 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington.
Born December 16, 1908 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Riker Samuel and Maude Rose VanArsdall. She was the widow of William Henry Underwood.
She was a teacher in the Shelby County public schools and a member of Shelbyville First Christian Church.
Survivors include: three sons, William V. Underwood, Lexington, George Underwood, Deerfield Beach, FL, John Riker Underwood, Orlando, FL; one sister, Margaret "Peggy" Kitchen, Versailles; four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 30, at the Shannon Funeral Home in Shelbyville, with Dr. Howard Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy are suggested to the Christian Church Home of Louisville.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

WILKES UTTERBACK
Wilkes Bond Utterback, 77, of College Manor, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
Born December 21, 1923 in Lawrenceburg, he was the son of the late Charles N. and Ethel Perry Utterback.
He was a retired plant manager for the E. W. Brown Power Plant. He was a past member of the Harrodsburg Rotary Club and served in the Navy during World War II.
He was a member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at Harrodsburg Baptist Church where he also served as clerk for 27 years.
Survivors include: his wife, Gwen Utterback, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Glenna Cigallio, Douglasville, GA; one brother, Charles Utterback, Louisville; one sister, Tommy Huffman, Lawrenceburg; one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Oliva.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 27, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Paul Hanks, Calvin Morgan, Harold Sutherland, Charles Aldridge, Ron Leach and John Sparrow. Honorary bearers were deacons of Harrodsburg Baptist Church, members of the Faith, Hope and Love Sunday School class, Lawrence Hendren, Johnny Huffman and Bernie Utterback.

MARGARET WAYNE
Margaret Brown Wayne, 87, of Main Street, Mackville, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at Norton Spring View Hospital in Lebanon.
Born September 30, 1913 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Sallie A. Smith and Boyd Brown Sr. She was the widow of Melvin L. Wayne.
She was a member of Unity Baptist Church, a member of Guiding Star Chapter #450 of the Order of Eastern Star, and a homemaker.
Survivors include: two daughters, Anna Florence Russell and Mary Will Peavler, both of Mackville; four sisters, Lillie Litton, MS, Mildred Knight, Louisville, Edith McMillin and Susie Anderson, both of Springfield; six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, one step grandchild. She was preceded in death by a grandchild, William Wayne Russell, two great grandchildren, Robin Michelle White and Thomas Austin Gabhart; one brother, Boyd Brown, Jr. and a sister, Evelyn Shewmaker.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 27, at Unity Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Readnour, Rev. Larry Reed, Rev. Hilary Claypool and Bro. Fred Whitacre officiating. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joe Peavler, Aaron Gabhart, Evann White, Adam White, Blair Pittman, Tommy McMillin, Scott Sutton and Larry Thomas. Honorary bearers were Mitchell Burns, Gary Clifton, Jeff Russell, Fred Edelen, Emmett Devine, Marty Hatchett, Allen Noel, Jim Powell and Tommy Russell.
Carey and Son Funeral Home in Springfield was in charge of arrangements.

Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, Post #6935, VFW and DAV Post #54 conducted Military Rites for Wilkes Utterback at Spring Hill cemetery on March 27.
Attending were Roy Freeman, Howard Howells, Lucian Landers, Marion Mershon, Tom Denny, James Carey and Joe Harlow.

KATIE AUGUSTUS
Katie Bryant Augustus, 89, of 1919 Shelby Street, Sandusky, OH, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at the Providence Care Center.
Born May 27, 1911 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late George and Lina Coffey Bryant. She was the widow of John H. Augustus.
She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, a former Sunday School teacher and a former member and past treasurer of the Church Women United.
She was a volunteer for the Red Cross and the Senior’s Center, working on the advisory board, and was a volunteer for the Porter’s Memorial Nutrition Sight.
Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Lois) Pettis, Sandusky, OH; two sons, Carl Augustus, Sandusky, OH and Jerome Augustus, Oberlin, OH; two sisters, Georgia Chenault, Pontiac, MI, Marie Hunn, Harrodsburg; two brothers, Elijah Bryant, Akron, OH and John Bryant, Louisville; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Bryant, and a sister, Bessie Fisher.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 6, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky, OH, with Rev. Curtis A. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery in Sandusky.

HOWARD GABHART
Howard Gabhart, 90, of 1009 E. National Road, Washington, IN, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Hillside Manor Nursing Center in Washington.
Born January 2, 1911 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late William and Georgia Morgan Gabhart. He was the nephew of the late Dr. W. S. Gabhart of Harrodsburg.
He was a Sunday School teacher and elder in the Christian Church in Alfordsville, IN. He was also a trustee for Reeve Township and was the builder of the Washington Nursing Center. He ran the Rose Four Mill after moving from Kentucky at the age of 15.
Survivors include: his wife, Enid Gabhart, Washington, IN; nine daughters, Margaret Enid Kennedy, Lancaster, CA; Amy June Gardner, Alfordsville, IN, Christina Ruth Roach, Mitchell, IN, Georgia Anne Prewett and Sarah Jane Alvey, both of Washington, IN, Mary Frances Bell, Cincinnati, OH, Martha Lee Brammer, Indianapolis, IN, Lorna Gayle Cook and Annie Bruce Snyder, both of Atlanta, GA; four sons, Wyndham Howard Gabhart, Jackson, MS, Charles Roland Gabhart, Jasper, IN, Thomas Stanley Gabhart, Huntingburg, IN, Phillip Morgan Gabhart, Alfordsville, IN; 52 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Lee Funeral Home in Loogootee, IN. Burial will be in the Community cemetery at Alfordsville.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6, and after 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.

IRENE GREEN
Irene Graham Green, 80, of 1110 Fairview Road, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at her residence.
Born September 16, 1920 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late W. E. and Nona Turner Graham.
She was a homemaker and a longtime member of the Hopewell Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include: her husband, Richard Green, Mercer County; one son, James Richard Green, Salvisa; one daughter, Roxie (Don Billy) Rogers, Harrodsburg; one sister, Pauline (Richard) Willey, NM; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Griggs, one brother, Laurel Graham and one sister, Celestine Graham.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 23, at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Bro. Richard Easterling officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Heulan Phillips, Steven Rogers, Mark Griggs, Roy Griggs, Chad Vandergrift, and Curtis Sherrow. Honorary bearers were members of the Pals Sunday School Class at Hopewell Baptist Church.

PEARL JARVIS
Pearl R. Jarvis, 93, of 4110 Glens Creek Road, Willisburg, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born February 21, 1908 in Clay County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Hedgeman and Sara Jane Collins Triplett. She was the widow of Lawrence D. Jarvis.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include: two sons, Dr. Dale Jarvis, Willisburg, Alfred Jarvis, New Port Richie, FL; three sisters, Audra Walker, Mt. Vernon, OH, Vera Triplett and Melissa Browning, both of Fairmont WV; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Waldo Carl Jarvis.
Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the Bartlett Cemetery, Bartlett, OH, with Rev. Richard Woodin officiating. Burial was in the Bartlett Cemetery.

ROBERT ZELIFF Sr.
Robert P. Zeliff Sr., 82, of 712 High Street, died Sunday April 1, 2001 at Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born December 21, 1918 in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Clifford and Bertha Hartman Zeliff.
He was a retired employee for Corning Glass and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
He was a member of DAV an VFW and served in the army during World War II.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Hourigan Zeliff, Harrodsburg; two sons, Larry Zeliff, NY, Robert Zeliff Jr., Lonedell, MO; three daughters, Carol Ann Martin, Bradford, PA, Pat Ross, Mercer County, Charlotte Young, Harrodsburg; one step daughter, Janice Byrge, Harrodsburg; one sister, Margie Lampheir, NY; four grandchildren, six step grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 4, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John David Lane officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dustin Young, Scott Ross, Josh Martin, Wesley Martin, Jeremy Fuller and Ronnie Hartman.
