KENNETH KIRKLAND

Kenneth Kirkland remembered
Kenneth Burl Kirkland, who served as Mercer County Judge-Executive from 1992-98, died at his home Thursday after a long illness.

Credited for helping the county get the Anderson-Dean Community Park and many other endeavors, Kirkland was a farmer, a developer and businessman. He worked for IBM for 22 years and partnered with David Baker and Jim McGlone as Baker, Kirkland and McGlone farmers and land developers.

John Trisler, who resigned as Mercer County Judge-Executive a few months ago, described Kirkland as “an exciting, dynamic person who really cared about his community. He was a good Christian person and was very unselfish.”

“The first thing I think about is that he was a man of great vision, and once he made a decision something needed to be done, he’d give 120 percent to accomplish it,” Trisler added.

He said important contributions Kirkland made to the county were his work to make Anderson-Dean Community Park a reality;’ his passion for young people and older adults; his help in the building of the Mercer County Senior Citizens Center, recycling center and improvements to the county’s animal shelter. “He had visionary goals and could relate them to others and didn’t really want any credit for it,” Trisler said.

“I can’t say enough good things about him,” said Kirkland’s longtime business partner, David Baker. “He was the best friend anybody could hope to have and the most honest person you could ever deal with. When you had Kenneth Kirkland for a friend, you had a friend,” Baker said.

Baker said he and McGlone worked together for nearly 20 years and that he and Kirkland worked some together before that time. “It is unbelievable how much he got done in a small period of time. He just went and went and went and got money and grants for things for Mercer County, and he did more for our roads and bridges in a short period of time than anyone,” Baker said.

“His family was tremendously important to him, but this faith was number one.” Baker added.

Carl Perkins, who worked as the county’s payroll tax administrator when Kirkland was county judge-executive, said, “Kenneth was probably an angel among us that many people didn’t know. All I can say is I was blessed to have him in my life. He was generous; he gave so much without many people realizing it. People would come in for many things the county couldn’t give, and he’d give out of his own pocket – food, clothing, - without anybody knowing.”

Mercer Fiscal Court Magistrate Alvis Johnson, who served with Kirkland on the initial park committee, said Kirkland was a civic and community-minded leader. “We wouldn’t have had the park without him, and we have a beautiful park as a result of his hard work. He’s going to be greatly missed,” Johnson said.

Kirkland, is survived by his wife, Audrey Cosby Kirkland, a son, Kenneth Michael Kirkland and other relatives. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church and Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation.
