LOUIS DEAN

Louis Anthony (Tony) Dean, 73, of Knoxville, TN, formerly of Mercer County, died Sunday, August 26, 2001 at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

Born October 9, 1927 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Carroll Price and Agnes Huff Dean.

He was a retired division manager for Y-12 in Oak Ridge, TN, and was a member of the St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Knoxville, TN.

He was a 1945 graduate of Harrodsburg High School.

Survivors include: his wife, Sandra K. Dean, Knoxville, TN; three daughters, Ann (Al) Klensch, Johnson City, TN, Ellen (Mark) Graham, Knoxville, TN, Nancy (Mike) Jones, Brentwood, TN;’ one step daughter, Kim (Michael) Foxx, Orlando, FL; two sisters, Peggy Deiss, Louisville and Betty Henry, Carlsbad, CA; 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor McFatridge Dean.

Funeral services were held in Knoxville, on Wednesday, August 29 and graveside services at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 30, at Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg with Father Joseph Muench officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the St. John Neumann Catholic Church Building Fund, 225 Jamestown St., Knoxville, TN 37922.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

JEWELL LATHREM

Jewell Wise Lathrem, 98, of Cedar Creek Road in Owenton, died Friday, August 24, 2001 at the Owen County Memorial Hospital.

Born April 7, 1903 in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Gertie Barns Wise.

She was a housewife.

Survivors include: one son, Ray Lathrem, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Joyce Ann Lathrem, Monterey. Seven grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren and two great great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, in Owenton, August 27, with Rev. Wayne Kelly officiating. Burial was in the Monterey Cemetery.

HILDA PERKINS

Hilda Perkins, 76, formerly of Chestnut Street, died Sunday, August 26, 2001 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born November 10, 1924 in Bucharest, Romania, she was the daughter of the late Wilham and Maria Booth Hehn. She was the widow of Raymond Perkins.

She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and a retired Cricketeer employee.

Survivors include: three daughters, Brigitte Hendren, Smyrna, TN, Wanda Perque, Harrodsburg, Debbie Patrick, Lawrenceburg; one brother, Ambrose Hehn, Augsburg, Germany; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Perkins, Jr.

A prayer service was held Tuesday August 28 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Funeral services were held. Wednesday, August 29, at St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Joe Muench officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Nathan Hendren, Patrick Coslow, Scott Sheperson, Shawn Brodeur, Bill Patrick and Joey Hendren.

JAMES RILEY
James Byron Riley, 56, of Paddock Drive, Nicholasville, died Monday, August 27, 2001 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.

Born December 5, 1944 in Mercer County, he was the son of Bryon B. Riley and Hazel Taylor Riley Vinning.

He was a retired special agent for the FBI.

Survivors include: his wife, Onderia L. Ripley Riley, Nicholasville; one daughter, Lea Lynette (David) Klovski, Ann Arbor, MI; one son, Vincent Bryon (Devauna) Riley, Harrodsburg; Three sisters, Helen Brown, Lawrenceburg, Jolene Bailey, Lawrenceburg, Kathy Harrison, Lexington; two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 30, at Betts and West Funeral Home, 404 N. Main Street, Nicholasville, with Rev. Phil Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens in Jessamine County.

Pallbearers will be Bill Bowling, Bill Welsh, Ben Cartinour, Bernie Thompson, Tommy Gayhart and Jim McGuire.

Contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Visitation from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, at the funeral home.

TONY SHEWMAKER

Tony Ellis Shewmaker, 50, of 351 N. Main Street, died Sunday, August 26, 2001 at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Nashville, TN.

Born November 11, 1950 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of C. M. and the late Marie Ellis Shewmaker.

He worked for Spirit Chevrolet and The Antique Mall.

He was a member of Harrodsburg Christian Church where he was the Service Class Sunday School teacher and a deacon.

He served in the Navy from 1970 to 1974.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include: his wife, Everice Shewmaker, Harrodsburg; two sons, Adam Ellis Shewmaker, Nashville, TN, Matthew Blake Shewmaker, Harrodsburg; one brother, Calvin (Betty Sue) Shewmaker III; one sister, Linda (Butch) Hood, all of Harrodsburg.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 29, at the Harrodsburg Christian Church with Don Chase officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 Thursday in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville.

Pallbearers will be Bill Watts, Larry Camic, Kenny Wade, Rusty Weitzel, Benton Lake, LeMayne Ellis and Zenah Teater.

Memorials are suggested to the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

DENNIS STRATTON

Dennis Stratton, 41, Silverdale Road, Augusta, GA, died Monday, August 13, 2001 at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

Born January 3, 1960 in Mercer County, he was the son of William Stanley Stratton, Appling, GA, and Betty Mae Bruner Stratton, Harrodsburg.

He was a former fence company owner, enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include: his step mother, Merribeth Stratton, Appling, GA; one daughter, Ashley Rae Stratton, Augusta, GA; two brothers, David Stratton, Harrodsburg, Gary Thomas Stratton, Burgin; one half brother, Bryan Arthur Stratton, Appling, GA; two sisters, Dianna Stratton Freeman, Burgin, Janet Pearl Stratton Sanders, Harrodsburg; one half sister, Susan Michelle Stratton, Appling, GA.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 17, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert Dunn officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Robert Bradshaw, Gary Stratton, Stanley David Stratton, Joseph W. Freeman, Jeff Sanders and Russell Harlan Bruner. Honorary bearers were Bryan Arthur Stratton, Dustin Merriman, and Dalton Harmon Hurst III.

DONALD VANARSDALE
Donald T. “Don” Van Arsdale, 68, of Kettering, OH, died Thursday, August 23, 2001.

He was the son of the late Thomas J. and Anna Van Arsdale.

He was retired from St. Elizabeth Medical Center as Director of Purchasing and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He was a US Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include: his wife, Janet Kenning Van Arsdale; one son, Denny P. (Patty) Van Arsdale; one daughter, Connie S. (Jason) Hill; one sister, Carol E. Kramer; three brothers, Wally and William Stine and Jerry Van Arsdale. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane Withers, three brothers, George, James and Joseph Van Arasdale.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, August 28, at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420.

Tobias Funeral Home (Far Hills Chapel), was in charge of arrangements.

VIOLA WEBB

Viola B. Webb, 61, of Lexington, died Thursday, August 23, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born April 2, 1940 in Liberty, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Nim Godbey and Matrie Wesley Godbey Kinder.

She was a retired employee of the Kentucky Department of Education.

Survivors include: one son, Anthony Allen Beasley, Lawrenceburg; one daughter, Michele Lynn Phillips, Lawrenceburg; three brothers, Ray Godbey, Frankfort, Floyd Godbey, Harrodsburg, Velmer Godbey, Lawrenceburg; one sister, Flonnie Byrd, Harrodsburg; three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 25, at the Valley Oak Baptist Church in Casey County, with Troy Merrick officiating. Burial was in the Valley Oak Cemetery.

WILLIAM BAKER
William Douglas Baker, 75, Oakwood Estates, died Saturday, Sep-tember 1, 2001 at his residence.

Born April 12, 1926 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James Abraham and Francis Lorraine White Baker.

He was a retired Corning Glass Works employee where he worked for 30 years. He was a farmer, an avid motor scooter rider and fisherman.

He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict and was a life member of the VFW and American Legion.

He was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, a member of the Faith, Hope and Love Sunday School Class and a senior deacon. He was an associate member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Myers Beach, FL and a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.

Survivors include: his wife, Buena Sallee Baker, Harrodsburg; one son, Ronnie Maurice Stratton, Daytona Beach, FL; four brothers, James Baker, Harry Arnold Baker, Robert Lee Baker and Kenneth Howard Baker, all of Lexington; two sisters, Francis Baker Taylor and Ernestine Oei, both of Lexington; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Joey Douglas Baker.

Funeral services were held. Tuesday, September 4, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Robert DeFoor and Rev. Monia Safley officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mark Stratton, Michael Stratton, Tim Ellis, Myron Ellis, Chad Ellis and Ronnie Bailey. Honorary bearers were members of the Faith, Hope and Love Sunday School Class.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, PO Box 1213, Danville, KY 40422; Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation, PO Box 286, Harrodsburg, KY 40330 or to one’s favorite charity.
