Charles J. Balles Sr., 87, of Lexington, died Saturday, July 13, 2002.
Born in 1915 in Sewickley, PA he was the son of the late Alice Gallagher and John Balles.
He was a graduate of Robert Morris School of Business in Pittsburgh, PA and served in the US Army during World War II.
He was a 20 year member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Harrodsburg and attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Lexington.
Survivors include: his wife, Elsie Steigerwald Balles, Lexington; three sons, Charles J. Balles Jr., Lexington, John A. (Therese Azkoul) Balles, Grand Rapids, MI, and Peter J. (Debra Compton) Balles, Salvisa; one daughter, Mary Balles (John C) Dailey, Lexington. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul W. Balles, and a sister, Mary Alice Walsh.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 16, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1750 Summerhill Drive, Lexington.

GLADYS BLACK
A memorial service for Gladys Johnson Black, 93, of Danville Street, Burgin, was held Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at the Centenary United Methodist Church, Danville, with Rev. Don Benningfield officiating.
She died June 25, 2002 at Stanford House nursing Home.
Born September 11, 1908 in St. Francis, MN, she was the daughter of the late Rasmus and Elna Johnson. She was the widow of Frank S. Black.
She was retired from the former Belks Furniture Store and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Pioneer Burgin Homemakers Club.
Survivors include: two daughters, Madrene Black Houy, Harrodsburg, and Joan Hoyt, Homer, AK; one son, John Black, of WV; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to Centenary United Methodist Church.
MARY DIVINE
Mary Pearl Divine, 89, of 192 Boyle Avenue, died Monday, July 15, 2002 at Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born May 20, 1913 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late John William and Beulah Crossfield Fallis. She was the widow of James William Divine.
She was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer Church of Christ.
Survivors include: one daughter, Betty Jo Rappleye, Harrodsburg; two randchilddren, Debrah Lynn Swope and Chuck Durham, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 17, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Terry Morrison officiating. Burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Ebenezer Cemetery Fund.
EFFIE DORSEY
Effie Mae Dorsey, 90, formerly of Duncan, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Harrodsburg Health Care.
Born August 30, 1911, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Pearl Simpson Pinkston. She was the widow of Delbert Dorsey.
Survivors include three nephews and three nieces. She was preceded in death by a son, Otis Dorsey.
She was a former employee of Beaumont Inn, a member of Bethel Baptist Church and loved to crochet and quilt.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Jack Geurin officiating. Burial was in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Curtis Sherrow, Wilbur Britton, Carroll Gritton, and Jim Hawthorne.

JAMES HARMON
James Willard Harmon, 78, of 645 Stratton Road, Salvisa, died Friday, July 12, 2002 at Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born May 10, 1924 in TN, he was the son of the late Ike and Drucilla Smith Harmon.
He was a retired self-employed truck driver and was a member of the Mayo Christian Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Betty D. Harmon, Salvisa; one son, James (Buster) Allen Harmon, Pikeville, TN; two daughters, Holly Harmon, Harrodsburg and Brenda Hodge, Sale Creek, TN; three step sons, Steve Ransdell and Mike Ransdell, both of Salvisa, and Danny Ransdell, Lawrenceburg; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 14, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jerry Perry officiating. Burial was in the Mayo Christian Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Stephen Ransdell, Timmy Ransdell, Jason Ransdell, Justin Ransdell, Brian Sallee and Tracy Hodge.
Memorials are suggested to the Mayo Christian Church Building Fund.
LORRAINE HATCHER
Lorraine Jarrell Hatcher, 78, of Frankfort, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Kindred Hospital in Louisville.
Born July 21, 1923 in Prestonsburg she was the daughter of the late Joe and Fanny Stephens Jarrell. She was the widow of former Secretary of State George Glenn Hatcher.
She was a teacher for the Frankfort Independent Schools for 23 years and was also retired from the Workforce Development Cabinet.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Frankfort, and an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include: three daughters, Elizabeth Springate, Harrodsburg, Elissa Odham, Louisville, Glenna Hatcher Frankfort,; one brother, Joe Wheeler Jarrell, Louisa.
Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Frankfort, Saturday, July 13 with Rev. David Hilton and Rev. Harold Dorsey officiating.
Burial was in the Frankfort Cemetery.
ADA HENDRICKSON
Ada Speaks Hendrickson, 90, of Lancaster, died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born August 29, 1911 in Paint Lick, she was the daughter of the late Martin Green and Mattie Davis Green Galea.
She was a homemaker and member of the Lancaster Baptist Church.
Survivors include: four daughters, Georgia Speaks (G. B.) Shell, Lancaster, Linda Speaks (Jim) May, Milton, WV; Patsy Speaks (Lewis) Walter, Harrodsburg, JoAnn Speaks (Joe) Williams, Louisville; one daughter-in-law, Melva Dean Speaks, Stanford; a special friend and caretaker, Mildred Stamper, Paint Lick; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 17, at Ramsey Funeral Home, Lancaster, with Rev. Barry Jeffries officiating. Burial was in the Lancaster Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary, Giles and Jonathan Shell, Hamilton O. Speaks, Josh Garrett and Bland Garrett IV. Honorary bearers were Hallie Lamb, Mildred Stamper, William and Judy Begley, Billy Wayne Lane, Louise Tudor, McKinley and Daisey Gay, Edna Shepherd, Flossie Tuttle, Billy C. Doolin, Ina and Richard Shaw.
RICHARD ALLEN
Richard “Rick” Allen, 47, of Smiths Grove, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Friday, July 19, 2002 at his residence.
A native of Decatur, IL, he was the son of Lorraine Tackett and William Allen.
He was retired, a member of the Christ Fellowship Church, an army veteran, a member of the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors include: his wife, Anne Crawford Allen, Smiths Grove; one daughter, Michele Humphrey, Bowling Green; one brother, Don Allen, Lexington; two sisters, Janice Hall, Sevierville, TN, and Sherry Lay, Harrodsburg; two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 22, at the Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home in Bowling Green. Burial was in Rocky Springs Cemetery in Warren County.
BURA COUCH
Bura Powell Couch, 90, formerly of Amsterdam Road, and more recently, a resident of The Willows of Easley, died Sunday, July 21, 2002 at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.
Born in Pickens County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Lafette and Alice Galloway Powell. She was the widow of Walter A. Couch.
She was a homemaker and a member of Enon Baptist Church where she belonged to the Ladies Sunday School Class.
Survivors include: two sons, James (Eunice) Couch, High Point, NC and Randy (Marilou) Couch, South Shore, KY; one daughter, Peggy (Bob) Brown, Hendersonville, NC; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and eight step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Glen Couch.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 24, at Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Russ and Rev. Grady Tollison officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

EARL DOUGLAS
Earl Frank Douglas, 69, of Sunset Drive, died Friday, July 19, 2002 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.
Born August 7, 1932 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Willie and Edna Mae Robinson Douglas.
He was retired from IBM, a United States Air Force veteran, a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church, and was an avid Bass fisherman.
Survivors include: his wife, Velma Jean Douglas, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Becky (Marty) Milburn, Harrodsburg; one son, Billy (Nicole) Douglas, San Francisco, CA; One sister, Lula Faye Binkley, Danville; two grandchildren, Corey Douglas Milburn and Carissa Thomas Milburn. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer L. and Henry Douglas.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 22, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bobby Reeves, Gilbert Russell, Marty Milburn, Butch Merchant, Charles McCrystal and Robert Pike. Honorary bearers were his two grandchildren.
