CLONA CURRY

Clona Christerson Curry, 66, of Louisville, died Monday, August 19, 2002 at Camelot Health Care.

A native of Washington County, she was the daughter of Marvin Christerson and the late Ethlyn Campbell Christerson.

She was owner/operator of the Critic’s Choice in Carrollton, and a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Carrollton.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include: her husband, Doug Curry III; two daughters, Karen Hudgins and Elizabeth Harmon; one son, Doug Curry IV; one brother Kenneth Christerson; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 21, at the Chapel of Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or WHAS Crusade for Children.

EARL DEAN
Earl Dean Sr. Dies

Longtime Mercer County attorney Wilbur “Earl” Dean, 89, of Hopewell Road died Wednesday morning, Aug. 21.

Dean was associated with the attorney firm Dean, Dean and Dean in Harrodsburg.

“From the standpoint of the legal community, everybody will be in agreement, Mr. Dean was a renowned trial attorney, well respected for his abilities as well as his assistance to the attorneys in this community,” said Harrodsburg attorney Bradley Guthrie.

Dean was the widower of Georgia Sanders Dean. He is survived by three children, Lee Dean, Adele Greensburg and Judy Burks. He was predeceased by sons Wilbur Earl Dean Jr. and Hadden Dean Sr.

Arrangements are incomplete at Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

E. R. GRAHAM

E. R. Graham, 85, of 323 Runyon Road, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born October 19, 1916 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Bertha Royalty Graham.

He was a retired U. S. Postal Service employee, a farmer and a member of the Christian church. He was an army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include: his wife, Ellen Gardner Graham, Harrodsburg; two daughters, Sharon (David) Perkins, Danville, and Dr. Janet (Joe) Fishman, Bellaire, FL; three brothers, Vilas Graham and Truman Graham, both of Harrodsburg; and Will Tom Graham, Danville; four randchilddren, Kate and David Perkins, and Julie and John Fishman. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Don, Hubert, Roy and Oakie Graham, and one sister, Mary Lou Cooksey.

A private family service is scheduled for Thursday, August 22. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

WILLIAM GRAVELY

William “Bill” W. Gravely Sr., 78, of 382 Bonta Drive, died Sunday August 18, 2002 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 10, 1924 in Brodhead, he was the son of the late William Gervis and Pearl Hicks Gravely.

He was a teacher and band director for Harrodsburg and Danville city schools, a member of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church and the Danville Advocate Brass Band.

He was an army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary Mitchell Wooldridge Gravely, Harrodsburg; two sons, William W. Gravely Jr., Glasgow, and Thomas Gravely, Edgewood; one daughter, Mary Mitchell Gravely Reinhardt, Lexington, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 21, at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joe Tarry and Rev. Ron Reinhardt officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Andrew Alexander, Donald Cole, Dudley Spoonamore, Stuart Powell, Joe McClellan, Buddy Purdom, Tom Moore, Mike Perros and Eddie Russell. Honorary bearers included Robert Hartwell, Jerry Freeman, Bill Dixon, Guy Ashmore, Dennis Rachford, Gus Clark, Ted Harley, Larry Woolums, Mike Barnard and Dennis Preston.

Memorials are suggested to Presbyterian Church Academy, 326 S. Main St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

WILLIAM “BILL” GRAVELY

William Woolfolk “Bill” Gravely, Sr., 382 Bonta Drive, Harrodsburg, passed from this life on August 18, 2002. He was born June 10, 1924 in Brodhead, Kentucky, spent his childhood in Danville and Frankfort, and graduated from high school in Washington, DC. He was the son of the late William Gervis Gravely and Pearl Hicks Gravely.

Bill’s maternal grandparents were Lela Pike Hicks and Robert Hemphill Hicks, who lived most of their lives in Brodhead, moving to Louisville in their later years. His paternal grandparents were Mary Susan Parker and William Edmund Gravely. Dr. Gravely graduated from the Louisville School of Medicine and began his practice in Brodhead, where he lived until his death in 1924.

Bill Gravely was an educator for 37 years and served as band director in the Harrodsburg and Danville city school systems, where his bands were state champions. He held a BA, MA and Rank 1 degree from Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky.

During World War II, Bill served from 1943-46 in the Third Army, Fifth Division, Tenth Infantry. He was one of Patton’s men at the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Rhine. He was wounded twice and held a Purple Heart and Cluster, ETO Ribbon with three clusters, and a Bronze Star.

Bill was an Elder in the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, co-founder of Hemlock Music Camp, State Music Festival Judge, Past president of the Central Kentucky Music Educators, member of the KMEA Association Festival Contest Commission, member of the Washington Redskins band, judge for many years of the Pegasus Parade Bands, the author of Kentucky Bands Take The Field, organizer of the first Danville Invitational Band Contest, and a charter member of the Danville Advocate Brass Band. He directed various vocal groups, produced musicals, and played in dance bands of the Big Band era. He belonged to many historical and patriotic clubs and was an avid gardener.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Mitchell Wooldridge Gravely, two sons, William Gravely, Jr. of Glasgow and his wife Nancy; Thomas Wooldridge Gravely of Edgewood and his wife Linda; one daughter, Mary Gravely Reinhardt of Lexington and her husband Craig; and seven grandchildren: Thomas Christensen Gravely of Falls Church, Virginia, Mary Kirsten Gravely of Glasgow, Thomas Nathaniel Gravely, Sarah Lynn Gravely, and Matthew York Gravely of Edgewood; and Andrew Scott Reinhardt and Samuel Taylor Reinhardt of Lexington.

Funeral services were held at the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2002. The family request that alternate expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions to the Harrodsburg Presbyterian Academy Fund.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

MARY HARTER

Mary Frances “Mickey” Harter, 74, died at her home in Green Valley, AZ.

A native of Camden, SC, she was the daughter of the late Perry Robert and Jenny Moore Langston and the widow of David Smuck Harter.

Survivors include: three daughters, Helen H. Sheorn of Gardiner, MT, Mary H. Alexander, Harrodsburg, and Lisa H. MacQueen of Star Valley, WY; one brother, Bob (Mary) Langston, Tucson, AX; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at the Quaker Cemetery in Camden, SC, Monday, August 26, 2002, at 10:00 a.m.

The Kornegay Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Kershaw County Fine Arts Center, York Street, Camden, SC 29020.

JOHN PHILLIPS

John Roy “Coonie” Phillips, 87, of Lexington Road, died Thursday, August 15, 2002 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 27, 1915 in Marion County, he was the son of the late John Walker and May Lawson Phillips.

He was a retired Mercer Stone Company employee and a former custodian for the Mercer County School System.

He was a member of Ellers Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Geneva Carrier Phillips, Harrodsburg; six sons, Johnnie C. (Patricia) Phillips, Loyd R. (Norma) Phillips, Danny (Shirley) Phillips and Terry (Laura) Phillips, all of Harrodsburg, and Bobby Phillips and Connie (Laura) Phillips, both of Danville; four daughters, Shelby (William) Devine, Mary (Harvey) Anderson, and Brenda (Preston) Doughty, all of Harrodsburg, and Rose (Junior) Cottrell, Willamstown; 27 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 18, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Mark Williams, Harold Best and James Harley officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, David Phillips, John Patrick Phillips, Tim Devine, Joey Moore, Allen Phillips and Scott Phillips. Honorary bearers were grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 102, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

GEORGE POYNTER

George E. Poynter, 67, of Main Cross Street, Mt. Sterling, died August 17, 2002 in Harrodsburg.

Born July 8, 1935 in Menifee County, he was the son of the late Everett C. and Eliza Walters Poynter.

He was a sign painter and a motor sports announcer, a member of the Masonic Lodge and an army veteran.

Survivors include: two sons, Steve Poynter, Harrodsburg and Kevin Poynter of Waco TX; three sisters, Lillie Reed, Dayton, OH, Mary Leveridge, Frenchburg, and Edna Emmons of Mt. Sterling; five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 19, at the Herald and Stewart Home for Funerals in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Drew Martin officiating. Burial was in the Fagan Cemetery with military rites.

Pallbearers were Tony Poynter, Walter Daugherty, Robin Munday, Percy Poynter, Doug Flannery and Dallas Clark. Honorary bearers were James Nalle, Gerald Greenwade, Jimmy Rawlings, Woodsen Stull, Bob Ballard, Wayne Daugherty, Paul Leveridge, Omar Emmons, Joe Poynter, David and Lovell Stevens, and McKinley Sparks Jr.

BERNICE SIZEMORE

Bernice Sizemore, 85, of Pleasant Hill Drive, Burgin, died Thursday, August 15, 2002 at his residence.

Born December 8, 1916 in Perry County, he was the son of the late Adolph and Annie Cornett Sizemore.

He was a former coal miner, construction worker and a retired employee of the City of Hazard.

He was a member of Harrodsburg Pentecostal Church and enjoyed traveling, cooking and fishing.

Survivors include: his wife, Mollie Bowling Sizemore; two daughters, Delores (David) Avington, Parkersburg, WV, and Mrs. Betty (Gene) Motley, Mercer County; two brothers, Delbert Sizemore, Lexington, and Dewey Sizemore, Ashland; five sisters, Florence Langley and Athelene Brown, both of Lexington, Lela Byrd and Irene Peters, both of Hazard, and Beulah Williams, Middletown, OH; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Sizemore, and a sister, Margaret Howard.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 18, at Shawnee Run Baptist Church with Bro. Bobby Potts and Bro. Lester Tirey officiating. Burial was in the Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lath David Motley, Robert Webb, William David Brown, Wallace Williams, Adolph Sizemore, William Nichols Brown, Elbert Michael Bowling, James Combs III, Richard Walter Langley Jr. and Michael Patrick Langley.

Expressions of Sympathy may take the form of donations to the Charity of one’s choice.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

RONNIE SLONE

Ronnie Gene Slone, 49, of Beecher House in Somerset, died Friday, August 16, 2002 at his home.

Born December 12, 1952 in Matewan, WV, he was the son of the late Geraldine Sticks and Kelly Slone.

He enjoyed playing and listening to music and attended the Berea Christian Church in Harrodsburg.

Survivors include: two daughters, Tamara (Brian) Huffman, Richmond, and Jennifer (Gary) Lowry, Harrodsburg; one brother, Robert R. Slone, Ashboro, NC; one sister, Wanda Hansen, Eubank, and two grandchildren, MacKenzie Lowry and Chance Lowry.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 19 at Lange and New Brothers Family Funeral Home with Rev. Major Nolan officiating. Burial was in Sloans Valley Cemetery.
